I have a 10LB 1.8 flywheel and a 7LB 1.9 flywheel, hope to see 8-10 track days this year, a bunch of autocrosses and daily driving/abuse.
With my stock VVT motor would the sprung hub organic 1.6 be the way to go or should I get the 1.8 for those autocross starts with big tires ?

I believe that the 1.6 organic is good to over 200 ft/lbs torque. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I sent my setup to Emilio and he had no issue with the 1.6 organic in my modified naturally aspirated VVT

What flywheel you running and how is it on the street ?

I have not had it on the street other than a few laps around the neighborhood. It is still in the building process.

I opted for the 1.6 lightweight flywheel but I am looking for fast revs with enough meat to hold the few ft/lbs torque that a naturally aspirated Miata can throw at it.

I finally got the chance to get it out on the road. I got the 1.6 organic sprung with the 7lb flywheel for my 03 1.8.

What a great choice! No difference at all in the pedal feel. (I almost don't like that as I want to be reminded of the new cool toy...LOL)

I have never seen a 1.8 spin up so fast. I put off buying the 1.8 because I loved the response from the 1.6 with the lighter components. The engine coupled with this flywheel/clutch combo is a fast reving thing. I run from 1000 to red line before I even know it. Incredible.

Got the exact same combo and ran it last night.
This won't have any problems holding anything I can throw at with my stock motor. The 7LB flywheel and 1.6 clutch is a much better setup than the 10.5LB 1.8 clutch I just pulled out.
I'm with you on the feel though, this thing is lighter than any clutch I've had in this car.

Well, test & tune begins in a few hours at the local autocross.

If you are looking at a super light flywheel, remember they make a lot of chatter. I noticed that yesterday when she was out on her maiden voyage.

It really isn't that terrible though. I have a stage 2 single mass in my TDI Jetta and I really only hear it when it is cold and am in neutral or 1st and 2nd in low rpms. People do turn their heads but mostly due to them wondering why a Jetta sounds like a diesel truck.

If you haven't heard the chatter before though, the first 1k miles you are worried you installed it wrong.

Not all flywheel/engine combinations are the same. Motor mounts, diff mounts, engine tune can all affect the relative sound amplitude, frequencies, harmonics, vibration etc.

For most B6's and stronger vibrating BP's, our 10.5 lb 1.8 flywheel has almost no extra noise over OEM and is easiest to launch. The 7.8 lb (and smaller diameter, lower MOI) 1.6 OTOH, is best when drive in anger. It will set up all manner of fun harmonics, growls, buzzes, name calling and general race car noises. Run with urethane diff mounts on a high compression BP and our SPM engine mounts, the 1.6 NVH is increased. Urethane diff mounts are as key ingredient in making things noisy. I prefer a 1.6 setup in all my cars that don't have twins.

Never had any noise issues running the 7LB flywheel before and it's just as quiet now.
Stock/good diff mounts and those harder Mazda motor mounts, I like it.

As for the 1.6 organic clutch,.... love it.
Just did 2 days of stupidity at the local autocross and the clutch is a champ.
Big fat slicks and street tires alike didn't faze it one bit.

Now I have one less thing to worry about. Nice.

Someone just posted over on M.net about some kind of a recall on a batch of these clutches. (Clutch wont disengage - MX-5 Miata Forum) From his last post, it sounds like they're definitely handling it, but maybe Emilio can say a bit more.

Emelio called me the night before last and it sounded like it only affects the 1.8 pressure plates. It was only for the recent batch he got in about a month ago. He will be sending out replacements as soon as they come in in 10-14 days. I'm sure he will chime in too.

We recently discovered that the last batch of covers of our 1.8 were incorrect. We identified the flaw (spec change) and contacted each of the affected customers. We are sending free replacements and covering two way shipping. On behalf of those that requested compensation for incidental expenses, we asked the manufacture for a reimbursement. We have asked each customer that requested compensation to submit a labor invoice.

No other customers or clutch components are affected. We went as far as contacting all the customers with 1.8 kits from the previous batch and found they were all working perfectly ("I love my clutch!"). If you have not been contacted by me personally, your components are not affected.
