Default Which transmission with 4:10 gears?

I was thinking 6 speed but seems like 5 speed will be much more driveable with 4:10 rear end. what are your opinions?

im looking to replace my transmission as second gear synchro is going out.

stay with the 5 speed. you are never gonna have enough power to need the stronger 6 speed.

Have you seen the gearing calculator?
http://www.flyinmiata.com/tech/gearing.php

1st gear + 4.10 + 205/15 +7200rpm = 38mph w/5spd... 32mph w/6spd.

More importantly, I'll quote the numbers for my favorite gear... 3rd.

5spd= 90mph
6spd= 73mph

Have fun shifting twice as much if you get the 6spd... guaranteed that **** will get old quick. If you were running 3.636, different story.

Late model 6 spd including MSM use 4.10 final drive from factory.

I love my 6-speed/4.1 combo. 52mph in 2nd means my car ***** and gets on an autocross course. My 4th gear is just a touch taller than your 3rd gear, my 5th is the same as your 4th, and my 6th is basically the same as your 5th.

i think ill go with 5 speed. gearing seems a bit better for track. i dont like to shift very often. plus, if i ever want to shift every 5 seconds, ill take 350z out

I love my 6 speed, 4:3 combo. Forget how short first is, it is only to get rolling, I never use it otherwise, the other gears just have a much better geometric progression in comparison the the 5 speed, and I never need to go faster than 210(7k rpm) so the top speed of 6th being a little less is not a problem either. I think of it as basically a cheap option for close ratio box.

Just to give you an idea of how great the ratios are for the track, this is a video of one of the previos trackdays when the car had fairly stock 1.6 engine(just cams which don't gain that much) and the 6 speed with 4:3 and fairly slippery tyres(hence the half spin) mine is the white one and the cam is mounted on a stock 96 spec na8 with sticky tyres. The ratios allow the engine to operate around peak hp more of the time, hence being faster with the same power.

Just my 2c worth,
Tim
