Default play in the diff??

edit:: after a quick search and other comments. I am talking about the stub that drives the pinion and is bolts the driveshaft to the diff:::

Short version:

Should there be any play in the diff half-shaft to drive shaft. There is about 2-4cm worth of play in the half-shaft/driveshaft connector and the diff now feel low on fluid.

full story:

Driving home today feel a nasty vibration going through the whole car. Go to pull over and hear chuck chuck chuck. Look under the car figuring my exhaust had dropped. Nope driveshaft bolts backed out again at about 50 miles an hour. Well with the help of Doppleganger I ran to Home Depot and picked up 4 new bolts, nuts and lock washer. Got the whole thing tight and started driving and car felt fine at first. I make a nice soft left off the exit ramp and hear a tink.

I figure at this point, ah **** one of the bolts is coming lose. I figured I was close to home and it is mostly down hill, just be gently and should be able to easily get it home. Car start to pick up some speed going down hill and it starts to vibrate on me. I say **** it and pull into the Homedepot. Look under the car and all four bolts are in nice and tight. Well I notice there is some fluid on my exhaust. Start to play with the driveshaft and notice some play in the diff half-shaft. I say **** it I am 500ish feet from home and just gimp it. well as I left off the gas turning into my complex, I feel the vlsd kick in due to the hill, then I hear a whine come from behind me. Sounds as if the diff whined due to low fluid.

My question is, is the diff shot? If there isn't ment to be play in the diff, then that would explain the vibration and the lost of fluid.

Or when the drive shaft unbolt the diff lost the fluid. Unfortunately in my mind that doesn't explain the vibration unless being low on fluid would explain vibration with speed or my drive-shaft some how got banged up enough to be unbalanced.

a long time again. I had. I was driving the car softly. I have had some many little issues since the turboed 1.8 swapped that I haven't really gotten on the car much.

I did read in the garage section of m.net were someone mentioned damaging the R&P due to the Pinion hitting something(don't remember what he hit) at 45. I was doing 50-60 easy when my Driveshaft let go and it could have easily smashed back up and hit the stub/halfshaft/where the it bolts up and could have damaged something internal..

ahh... wasn't really planing on opening the 1.6 up. My view on the 1.6 rear end is that it basically worthless and dump it as a whole. No point in really opening it up.

It's ok. I presumed that you had opened it up.
