Default Coilover / Shock Rod washer

Gotta wait around for my replacement shock, so I figured I would go ahead and post up a few questions that came up when I was "building" my coilover.

my original setup...fails...I tried to run without the metal "washer" that was originally on the shock...

So,when I put them back on, I realized that its exactly the same size as my springs, so it ends up either fine, or it will fit in the spring coils and then bind against them.

How did everyone solve this? can I just go buy a heavy duty large washer from a local store to use instead? How thick does it need to be?

I could just trim that so it fits inside the springs, but I would like a cleaner solution than that.

Also, are the rubber spacers/bushings required? what function do they serve? Sorry if these are noob questions, I am pretty new to suspension and don't know the terms to look up.
