I recently munched a 5 speed that has been whining for the last 3 years. I'm in the low 200s power wise for the last 3 months, but most of it's life was around 160ish. I prefer 6 pucks and tracked/drifted it at least twice a month.

I haven't taken it apart and probably won't but it got me home sounding like death.

well I'm about to micropolish this ************ or its getting the hose again. Apparently it works for the dsm and honda guys well enough that I can't seem to find anyone on the internet talking **** about it or saying its not effective. Considering the negativity bias of random comments, this suggests that no one is crying about it.

I've heard 250 is common, I just broke mine, it wasn't that big a deal. I had hit a bump, just after a shift, not sure if that is what did it or not.

I think a 3.9/5 is the best commonly available miata stuff you can do.

What's the general opinion.

Do trannies fail completely and unexpectedly on our cars or do most give you some warning time that trouble is coming? Like synchro's not meshing well, consistent whines, grinding or popping out of a certain gear over a period of time?

I figure i could sell it the way it sits for $10-12k, add that to the money I have saved up and do the 135...then sell the subaru and other miata for springs/dampers and another set of wheels. Maybe that i could have a reliable car for the track.

As it is you don't know your car isn't reliable! It hasn't broken yet. It may not break. It isn't likely to break. Any car and any part can break. Not every car or part will.

Drive your butt to the next available track day and have fun dammit! If someday, sometime, somewhere something breaks, then start bitching, replace it with stronger parts or start looking for an 135.

CryoREM them bitches
Pictures don't due justice https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t28924/

T,
If you want to build something, why not build a 6 speed, I have one in the garage that maybe needs something, maybe not, I don't know. The guy I got it from said it has no 1st, but 2-6 and R are all perfect. Someone else on this board got one that had the same failure, opened it, removed a sliver of something that was jamming 1st, and all was well. I can't or won't guarantee anything other than it's a 01 6spd. I never drove on it. I've been too lazy to open it up. Lowball me on it and you can have it. Keep in mind shipping costs.

The only thing I can guarantee is that you will shatter 5 speeds. I'll let him remain anonymous, but there's a guy near me with a track/autox driven ~260whp 1.6 Bell 3 that has no problem shredding gearboxes.

My 5-speed gave no warning. Spin first, hard 1-2 shift, spin 2nd, hard 2-3 shift, kablammo. My tranny had 1-2-4-5 and a wannabe-neutral 3rd.

what do you think about the REM ****? I'd rather do the 5-speed work for $800 because it will save me another $800 or so in the long-run. this guy apparently REM's them, then shot-peens, then REMs them again. That's two rimmers for the price of one!!!I'm also somewhat afraid of throwing it in the wrong gear. I have 5-speed compatible rear ends at my disposal, no 3.63.

I don't really want a 135, but I see it as the next best option. This green car was a lot of fun for the first 2000 miles. Better than sex with animals! I guess if I blow some **** up it just takes more money.

As did mine, although mine didnt spin 1st or 2nd, just a hard 2-3 shift and it exploded. I could still drive 1-2-4-5 when the car was in neutral it sounded horrible. I broke mine with under 200 whp on my old 1.6 setup.

Now i have a 6 speed and shift much harder than i ever did with my 5 speed and it takes the abuse just fine. I do NOT feel scared to really throw the car into gear at all now. Although i didnt with my 5 speed either

I would suggest getting a 6 speed and being done with it, keep your stock 5 speed for insurance in case you ever do break something in the 6 speed.

I got mine off e-bay shipped for 700 bucks from some guy in TX. Him and his son part miatas out and race in the spec miata class.
