My guess: FM is a respectable vendor and likely felt the above design would be 'too close' to 949's 6UL. It's not good business to be viewed as a knock-off, particularly when you're an established vendor. This said, the 6UL is hardly an original design, at least from an aesthetic standpoint. From a moldflow/DFM standpoint, of course it is proprietary.

Actually, no. That's basically the Spec Miata wheel up above, which looks a lot like the 13" Aero 300 that Jongbloed has made for a while. It's not an unusual design for light wheels, as it's a reflection of what works. Call it convergent evolution. The old design is almost a dead ringer for the BBS CH, actually, much more so than the 949 wheels.
Jongbloed made the change. I don't believe it was for aesthetic reasons at all, but I personally prefer the new design. And if it means we catch less crap because it doesn't look as much like other popular wheels on the market, even better.

That's a pity, I think the more compact beefy looking wheel is a better match for the miata than the spindly open look of the "new" design.
Not that I'm looking to get new wheels anytime soon though, so I've got no right to comlain anyway :P.

Don't spend your time looking for ways to be offended, life is too short.
I've asked for renders of these exact wheels. The offset is mostly done with the thickness of the pad, which has no effect on the dish. We'll certainly take lots of pictures once the real thing is in our hands as well, although the GB will be done by then.
As for the hub bore, a lot of Miata owners get all wound up about lug centric wheels. We can do bigger bores if there's a demand, but these are Miata wheels from a Miata shop so 54.1 seemed appropriate.

Not actually made in the USA. I don't know who writes Jongbloed's website, but that particular piece of information is very misleading.
Urban, we've got a car here with 15x10s and 275s. With the AK bolt-on flares, we're well clear of the tires. It's an easy enough thing to check if you pull the springs.

No seriously the 275's really would like to be put on 11" wheels. near Is I can tell they will fit with the same offset I am curently using. wouldnt really change fender/wheel well clearance issues at all. just make the tires feel as good as what you get when you mount 245's on 10" wheels. That combo makes my 275's feel squirmy sloppy and with snap brake away charicteristics by comparison. I think even more grip and improved behavior at the traction limit.
