Hey guys, I've been lurking on the forum for awhile now and am in the process of restoring a late 1991 Miata. I will have to post an intro with build pics ect. but I'm at work at the moment and can't do it.

Anyways it is time to throw some tires on my 16x7 wheels (I know, I wanted 15s, but they sent 16s instead =P) Will a 215/40/16 tire fit without issues on a 1991 which has R package springs? Or possibly a 225/40/16? Otherwise what would you recommend for a tire package? I plan on leaving it at it's current ride height, but may lower it in the future when I buy coil-over sleeves for the Tokico Illuminas.

Shouldnt be a problem. There was a blow out sale of kumho tires not long ago. look for the thread there's plenty of 215/40/16 pics there. As a matter of fact I bought at set for my parent's altima; the tires are very thin (side wall)

215/40/16 is the within .1% of the stock diameter...you'll have zero issues.


I'm running 215/45/16 without issues on +38

Thanks, I am a little worried about the look of a 16" wheel and a very thin sidewall on an NA with no lowering (other than R package springs that only lower the rear a bit). Would a 225 work as it's a little taller? Thanks for the quick responses. I'll post my intro thread once I get home as well.

215/40/16 front 245/35/16 rear 16x8 0 offset. No suspension mods you're going to be fine

Toyo T1R. The only company that makes them in that size and my only reason for sticking with 16s

Yeah... the wheels are Rotas so pretty average weight. I should have shipped them back for the proper size but i wasn't exactly worried about it at the time. =/ Maybe I'll sell the set and look for something else.

I have had 225/45/16 RS3's on my car for the last few years on 16x7 et40 Rotas. Just massed the fender liner. Will be hoping to try another set soon in a 16x8 et10-20. It's the beefiest tire I've found that's fittable and that can be found in a good compound.

If running a 16" whee, a 215/40 is fine..even a 205/45...but do NOT go with 205/40-16.
Wish there was a 225/40-16 out there...

there's a 245/35/16, screw a 225 when the 215s available would be close enough.
