Adaptronic + 1.6 = no sequential ignition

I tried wiring up the toyota COPs last night for sequential ignition in my 92 but it didn't work. They work great in wasted spark but I think I need a different trigger setup to run sequential. The documentation isn't clear on exactly what kind of trigger setup you need for it.

So the good news is I now have them running and it was just in time. I didn't realize that my car was hard to start because there was something wrong with the coil. I thought I had some setting wrong. Now it starts like a normal car instead of cranking forever.

There are pix in here if anyone really wants to see another COP picture or other pictures from the Adaptronic install.

Oh yeah, I'm running them at 2.5ms.

I did some digging on the Adaptronic forum and found out that you have to pull Aux 1/Ign 4 up to +12v with a 560 Ohm resistor to make it work. So this might still be possible. It would have been nice if they included that bit of info in the manual.

i've been going back and forth on if I want to do seq ign or waste. honestly I dont know if the RPM we run at compromises the coils in terms of duty cycle or not. i doubt it but... i wonder.

by not doing it, there is the benefit of the extra PWM output. shame we cant reassign IGN3/Tach to a different PWM.

Roach, on your 1.6, doesn't the CAS output a sync pulse?

This is the one part of the setup that I'm not really clear on. I just used the settings in the default ecu file. I understand the basics of the cas and triggering but I haven't worked through the timing system details to fully grasp what is going on.

So here is what I think I figured out.

Trigger 1 & 2 are the same wire coming from the cas, I'm not sure why the adaptronic needs to see the same trigger event on 2 inputs. The first trigger is listed as rising edge and the second is marked falling edge. ( Is this so that if it misses the the leading edge of the pulse it will still fire on the falling edge?)

I think trigger 3 is the sync (home?) pulse. I'm assuming this is the sync because it occurs every 720* and is labeled as home in the wring diagrams. This is how the ecu knows its at TDC of cyl 1, correct?

I would think that trigger 3 would be marked reset if it were the sync pulse, but it runs this way.... most of the time.

it doesn't appear to be using trigger 3 since it's unchecked for both IGN and INJ.

the manual also suggests that for non-reluctor sensors, you have to trigger on rise AND fall--which is what you have.

does your harness have a wire going to trigger 3?

oh and before you mess with triggers, try changing the lower left ignition settings as follows:

Ignition Output Pattern: Sequential 4 (8 Wasted, 4 DF)
Ign3 output: Ign 3

(not sure where your tach signal comes from but perhaps you can take it from the coil tach output)

I think it is being used to generate the cam reset pulse (pg 22). Is the CAS similar to the Nissan style optical sensors?

OK that makes sense.

There is a wire connected to trigger 3. It is connected to the CAS G-signal..? (according to the FSM)

I had it set up as Ign 3 and aux 1 as Ign 4, but it wouldn't run so I changed my wiring to run wasted spark again. It sounded like it was trying to run but not all of the cyl were firing, hopefully this was just because I didn't pull Ign 4 up to +12V. I don't have time to mess with the car this weekend so I'll have to wait and try when I get some free time.

My tach signal is coming from the coil tach outputs. I followed the Toyota COP thread instructions.

When running sequential ign do the coils need to be connected 1-3-4-2 or 2-4-3-1?

y8s 04-20-2009 10:20 AM

you dont want to connect them backwards .... which 2431 is.

the adaptronic fires in numerical order 1 2 3 4.

your car fires in firing order 1 3 4 2
