Adaptronic in '94 with an '03 motor and VVT

I figure this warrants a thread of it's own since it's likely going to be a real pain in the ass! I'll try to keep it up to date....

The first task is to make a harness, but before I do that, I need to decide what I want the Adaptronic to control. I was getting pretty well up to speed on MS and thats right when ZX-Tex convinced me to go Adaptronic (on that note, I admit I may show my ignorance here, but it's a risk I'll have to take). Feel free to comment or throw out "helpful" thoughts. Don't just junk up my shit.

I was planning to use as much of the factory harness as possible. I will be wiring the VVT separately.

First, among many questions...

The 94 is obviously wired for CAS, which I suppose I could use my CAS out of my existing motor in the 03? Wiring wise, seems like that would be a simple solution. Will that work along with the VVT?

With the A/C I amwondering how much I want to leave on the stock ECU, or move to adaptronic.

More to come, just thinking it through right now...

now wasn't that easier than thinking?

rlogan 03-30-2009 03:28 PM

Well then....yes, much better than thinking! I'll wire up what I know for sure and I'll be back with questions...

y8s 03-30-2009 04:15 PM

are you using the 94 harness?

rlogan 03-30-2009 04:17 PM

Yes, I was planning to use it as much as possible...

just subbing. I got 01 motor in my 96 and am saving my $ for the next adaptronics group buy.

quick question. if you use the 94 harness, I assume you can you run wiring for the cam sensor and VVT solenoid straight to the ECU?

y8s 03-31-2009 11:40 PM

yeah re-using the 94 harness may not buy you much. especially if you dont go parallel.

Showing your ignorance by listening to MY opinion?
For the record it did not take much to 'convince' him :)

The 94 harness is a full standalone harness. They didn't start making them parallel until the 99's with the funky alternator.

rlogan 04-01-2009 06:07 PM

I'll use the original harness for the stuff that carries over, injectors, ignition, a/c, etc...along with the original sensors on new motor(where possible). I'll wire the VVT, cam sensor (and anything else that doesn't carry over) separately. First I have to get my damn oil pan repaired!

TravisR 04-01-2009 06:18 PM

Use your PRCV from the 94 for the VVT. Thats why its actually wired up in the first place. The cam sensor is just a relocated rear CAS I believe. You just need to snake it around and plug it into that front cam sensor.

rlogan 04-02-2009 10:46 AM

So, I guess that means I won't need any of the functionality out of the factory ECU?

trigger 04-02-2009 10:54 AM

dumb question, PRCV?

next dumb question, wouldn't you need to have the cam sensor wired intothe ECU so that it can do the VVT thing? pre 99 doesn't have a cam position sensor.

rlogan 04-02-2009 10:59 AM

I had to look it up....

Pressure Regulator Control Solenoid. Valve

Pre 99 does have a cam sensor but I am not sure they provide the same data.

trigger 04-02-2009 11:02 AM

well the 01 sensor is located ont he back of the intake cam. it would read cam position relative to the crank position. valuable information for the ECU to have for VVT Phasing. Correct?

rlogan 04-02-2009 11:06 AM

correct...

trigger 04-02-2009 11:07 AM

cool. hopefully that is easy to wire into the ECU and program. travis?

y8s 04-02-2009 11:25 AM

the 99 and 01 sensors are pretty much the same except location.

when you say "back of the cam" for the 01, you mean on top of the valve cover FYI.

trigger 04-02-2009 11:32 AM

yup. as opposed to the cam gear location like the 99

TravisR 04-02-2009 12:51 PM

The cam angle channels are completely configurable. So where ever the sensors are in the 01-up motors. You just move the hookup where the 94 is on the back of the exhaust cam to the new location.

Do the same for the other pickups.

As far as the PRCV aux out. It is one of the three channels that can control the VVT. The PRCV shouldn't be present on the 01 up motors because of the fuel conversion, not that it necessarily has a vital roll anyways. They are supposed to relieve vaporized fuel from the rail.
