Coil pack failed?

SOOO, I'm driving home from work this evening and hit some traffic... Engine started to warm up a bit, then BAM, it's running like crap. It feels (and smells) just like the last time my coil pack went south about 5 years ago. Runs rough... NO power... Wants to die... Smells like gas.

The reason I'm posting this here is, I'm getting no CEL and no codes (well, nothing related to O2 sensors or cat efficiency like the last time it failed) and I'm wondering if the Adaptronic is hiding enough from the stock ecu to keep it from throwing those codes/CEL? This is my first experience with an after market ecu in parallel with the stock one (or any after market ecu for that matter).

I'm loving this thing so far though...

Thanks,
-Todd

What model car is it and what is your dwell set to?

micagreenmachine 12-17-2009 10:12 PM

'99, 3ms. This is on coil pack #2.

Pretty sure I have a spare 99 coil pack if you want to try it out. Let me know if you need to borrow it. I can ship it Monday.

Get COPS?

Poor grounding can ruin them too.

Poor grounding? Of the CP? Or the ECU???

I should add that the one code I'm really expecting that I'm not seeing is some type of misfire code.

I've never experienced the problem myself but I've read about it happening from multiple trustworthy sources. Here's one:

Coil Packs overheating on MX5 NBB S-VT

Hope this helps!

I installed the new firmware and dropped the dwell to 2500... Hasn't happened since, but I ordered a new CP from mazmart as I'm sure it'll happen again.

Thanks for the offer Stein, but I'm 99.999% sure it's the CP so I went ahead and ordered one.

I'll consider DIY COPS in the future, but don't want to rush doing a DIY setup and need to get this sorted out fast since it's my ride to work.
