Flat shift works!
So I have been playing around with the flat shift feature and I have to say I really like it. The hardest part is forcing yourself to keep your throttle foot flat on the floor (WOT) when shifting, which is of course completely unnatural. Flat shift requires that WOT is triggered for it to work. If you lift your foot even slightly, and get out of the WOT threshold (also adjustable BTW) then you will hit the rev limiter.
I shot some video of the flat shift while trying out my roll bar camera mount. There are two pulls in the video, 1st-4th. In the second segment on the 2->3 shift I lifted slightly and it overrevs. In the first segment I lifted on the 1->2 shift; it is a hard habit to break. Otherwise it works, and my foot is flat on the floor for each shift. All I am doing is clutching and shifting. It actually makes for a gentle shift, especially in 3rd and higher. Spark/fuel cut (got a cat), 4500 RPM set point. |
<goosebumps your car sounds really good. I love the flat shift, but I have the same problem you do. Its hard to convince yourself its ok to lay on the throttle between shifts.

Is a WOT switch OEM on 99's. I don't remember having one on my '93.

Thanks Travis. Yeah it is hard to keep the foot down when your 'muscle memory' is screaming LIFT LIFT! I was tempted to lower the WOT threshold to compensate but I think I'll just keep practicing instead.
Yes the WOT trigger is handled by the Adaptronic based on the TPS sensor. Once the TPS is calibrated, 0%-100% (just like the MS), then there is a settable threshold. It can be >95% which is what I have mine set at IIRC. So any time the TPS is above 95%, the throttle is at 'WOT' and so flagged in the logic. The same WOT flag is also used in the Adaptronic for A/C compressor cutoff, just like most OEM setups. |
The way your set up now anytime your over 4500rpm and 95%tps your fuel and ign are cut? How do you disable it?

Most people just put flatshift over the RPM band and it never get enabled. I think you can also uncheck both limiting options nad it does the same thing.

It uses the clutch switch at the top of the travel (not the starter lock out switch) so if you just barely press the clutch it will trigger. |
Oh, my post wasn't very helpful, I see what he's asking now... ooppss.. Well thats how to turn it off if you want to just turn the feature off.

You can also just uncheck the fuel and spark cut boxes for Flat Shift method in the Method box (to the right of the RPM set point).

I guess the clutch would be needed for flat "shift" - duh.
If your running no cat what's the preferred cut method - ign or fuel or both? |
With a cat you want to cut spark and fuel. Unburnt fuel in the exhaust can damage the cat IIRC.

Not sure on that. I have read speculation that with the fuel cut only, it is possible to ignite a lean charge in the cylinder if the injection is partially cut. Not sure if this is a big deal or not, so I just cut both to be safe.

I'm with tex on this one. Just looking at the motor itself, you could get some kind of an ultra lean burn. I don't know if it would damage the motor, or interfere with the catalyst in your cat. Who knows what it would produce, so its best to just cut both and not worry about it.

Thanks “ZX-TEX” I’ve had my Adaptronic ecu installed for 2 years now but have not bothered to set up the flat shift. Guess what I’ll be doing on the weekend.

I am not sure about aftermarket control units, but OEM boxes usually just cut fuel on deceleration and rpm-limit controls.
