OK, AFR's are looking good now so I have started to look at timing. I'm still running the base map that was supplied.
After researching some threads, especially this one https://www.miataturbo.net/forum/t18648/ it seems that the base timing map is pretty conservative, along the lines of 4-5* easy. From that thread, people indicated substantial improvements going from their base maps to maps supplied in that thread. That said, I can't compare a higher compression 99 motor to just anyone else's maps as most are running lower compression motors. Anyone have a higher compression motor timing map that I might review?
I don't know if I want to autotune spark or just start pulling 1* at a time and butt dynoing for a bit. At least AFR tuning was fairly easy with a UEGO gauge in my face.

I've been using a hybrid (taking the more conservative of the two) between Ben's and Brain's maps for a couple of weeks now. Made a noticeable difference in feel. No audible knock but I'm only boosting to ~145kpa.
