36-1 Cam Crank Settings EMS-4 help

2 Attachment(s)
I'm trying to set up my EMS-4 for a 36-1 crank wheel with NB Hall crank and cam sensors.

This is my best guess at it:

Basically I just set the Fuel wheel and spark to 72, set missing to 1 and left everything else alone. Are there any other settings I need to fiddle with?

Thanks a bunch!

For reference this is a 94 car with GTX bottom, 99 head, 99 valve cover and sensor, 99 crank sensor.

anyone?

Fuel, Wheel and Spark teeth are never higher than "24". Open AEM Tuner. Go File > Workspace > Open. Select an AEM20 Workspace. Now find the base calibrations in the AEMTuner folder. Go in the EMS-4 Base cals. There you will find base maps for a 36-1 with 1 sync. copy everything from the Advanced pickups tab including the Crank Tooth Control Table. You will still need to set the Ignition and Injection phasing values. This is dependent on how you wired in whatever you have.

ohhhhhh cool thanks a bunch! I'll give that a shot and see if i can get the ignition to sync.

Stat sync'ed is on! I made a noob mistake and forgot to turn on the Hall effect cam and crank in the options.

Does it matter if I select rising or falling edge btw? I have both set to rising edge.

With Hall sensors it doesn't matter. For mag sensors the EMS-4 does a digital conversion internally and will only work on a falling edge.

Okay that makes sense. Also I was wondering, why is it 24 teeth even for this 36-1 wheel. Does the EMS4 downconvert it to a 12-1 in its software?

Yes, the AEM uses an internal 12 tooth count for controlling its outputs. The function of the tooth control table is to convert whatever trigger wheel you have to 12 major events.

I see cool.

I tried to fire it up just now, I don't think I'm getting any spark. I have AEM smart coils wired in waste spark mode (3+2 and 1+4), and all of the harness wires seem to check out in the engine bay and on the ECU side. I put a timing light on wire 1 and wire 2 to see if there was any spark going through and there wasn't. I'm not sure where to start diagnosing this. Maybe I missed a setting in the ECU?

Okay I have spark! I had coil drivers wired together instead of using the b outputs for waste spark. So now I have my coils wired up like so:
Coil output 1: 1,4
Coil output 2: 2,3

Then I used the ignition Sync wizard to set my timing to 10BTDC which went fine.
I fired it up and idles like crap like maybe it was running on half the cylinders or less.

These were my inj and coil phasing settings for the first startup:
Injector 1: 6
Injector 2: 0
Injector 3: 12
Injector 4: 18

Coil 1: 0
Coil 1b: 3
Coil 2: 3
Coil 2b: 0

I'm not sure what to try next...any ideas?

Thanks =).

reddragon128 03-02-2013 05:18 PM

So I'm still not sure why the AEM tech gave me the above numbers, but I decided to try what made sense to me:
Injector 1: 12
Injector 2: 6
Injector 3: 18
Injector 4: 0

Coil 1: 0
Coil 1b: 12
Coil 2: 18
Coil 2b: 6

Why the hell would he even think there would even be a 3 in there? He knew this was a miata with a 36-1 wheel, and we went through all my crank cam settings....

Anyway car starts and seems to be firing on all 4! Idle is no good right now but I'll have to figure out why. Might need to fix my inj offset values or something...
