99 motor, very slow startup

I've been running the AEM with the SSM car all year, but one of the biggest annoyances is that it usually takes ~10 seconds of cranking before the car starts. Sync is on after 1 second or so (stock 99 crank and cam angle sensors with the stock shitty 4->AEM 2 tooth trigger wheel) but it just takes forever to finally catch for real. Anyone have any decent cranking maps to share from their AEM setup that starts quickly? I've tried more fuel, less fuel, different timing stuff, no real luck. I'm almost wondering if I need to do something with the idle air sensor to change airflow at cranking or something... :(

So the slow cranking has been happening all year?

The factory position sensors are know to be untrust worthy. Try changing them to new ones and or regaping the crank sensor.

If you don't care about Mazda brand parts, I found a cam sensor at JC Whitney for $33.xx

Might not hurt to clean up the IAC and or change the settings.

Good luck.

It's been happening all year, but the car only has to start once or twice a day on average for events so, while annoying, it wasn't a dealbreaker. At this point, I'm trying to convert the car to being a fun street car, and when it takes 10-15 seconds of cranking to catch and start, that doesn't give me a ton of confidence to drive the car to work.

The sensors are both brand new Mazda OEM. I had a problem with misfiring and engine cutting out when it got hot, which was fixed by replacing the cam sensor. I replaced the crank sensor at the same time just in case.

David, it has to do with the sync strategy in the setup. On the 4-tooth wheel, it shouldn't take 10 seconds, but it will never be stock. Our 12+1 wheel makes a big improvement on the 4-tooth wheel.

Remember, I bought the 12+1 wheel and just got tons of misfiring above 2000 RPMs? Startup was great, though. :)
