aem wideband is CRAP
So who uses one. First thing I noticed when I got it out of the box it the analogue gauge is cheap plasticky and slightly bigger diameter then specified (needed to get a file in and open up the hole I'd drilled for it that the other two gauges dropped into). No biggie.
The thing that really pisses me off though is that the connectors on the gauge would be sub par on a PC let alone anything that vibrates. The small connector falls out of the gauge if you look at it wrong and not only kills power to the gauge but also the whole controller so your ecu loses the signal too. Depending on where you mount the gauge it can be a real bastard to get back in. Right that's me done venting (I've already thrown some tools around the garage). Solutions wise would it be worth trying to get the back off the gauge and solder all the connections straight to the pins or is that going to be more trouble then its worth? Actually I've got a mate with an innovate controller not in use I might try to persuade him to part with it. Lastly in AEMs defence when it works it seems to work pretty well and it fires up and gives a reading bloody quick. |

I've used literally dozens of AEM's and the only ones with loose connectors were damaged. All others were actually really tight and needed convincing to come out.
They're made in china now iirc, so I'm not too surprised at the lacking QC. They work tho, so there's that. |
I had a AEM UEGO digital wideband gauge in my NB1 and had not complaints or any of the issues you describe and have another one waiting to be installed on my NA.

I dislike that what the gauge reads is off verse what TS gets in for its AFR value. I have played with voltages a bit using the settings from 18PSI, but TS still reads my tune as .3-.5afr leaner then it actually is. Overall I think it is a wash between the AEM and the MXT-L. For my next one it will be whichever is cheapest.

I am reading about the the new 14point7 wideband. I don't like that it doesn't have a traditional gauge for mounting purposes but supposedly it is the most accurate one out there. Sigma Lambda Controller Pure Plus 2 | 14Point7
Also, by hand tweaking my settings I have gotten my AEM Uego to match from gauge to megasquirt by no more than point one. I am seriously looking at the 14point7 "iDash" without gauge for my next wideband. It is about $100 more than the UEGO and has accelerometers and all kinds of other cool inputs you can run into the megasquirt. It also interfaces with your iphone or android... iDash | 14Point7 |
All of my AEM's work fantastic, no issue with connectors. I dont have the WB though so it could just be that.

I've also never once had an issue with an AEM wideband connector.

Solid motor mounts, solid diff mounts, zero compliance bushings and a BP motor. Read it will vibrate the teeth out of your skull......but not the connector off the AEM wbo2 gauge. You must have received a bad one.

I've seen a few with connectors that were loose right out of the box. After plugging them in, I just held the wiring harness down on the back of the gauge, and glued it to the back of the gauge with something like Shoe Goo.
It works to hold the wires still, and doesn't give them enough slack to wiggle out of the connectors anymore. Ghetto? Sure. Holds up to racing levels of vibrations/bumping/off-road excursions? Yes. |

None of the consumer grade widebands are any more accurate then any other ones. Bowling and Grippo (people who made MS) had a very good talk about wide bands a few years ago at a MegaMeet. They went in to all sorts of technical details to explain why they were all "crappy" and not the most accurate. Most of it was over my head, the important part that I do remember is that all consumer grade ones are about the same, so whatever one is cheapest that you like is what you should go with.

The new AEM units use the revised LSU 4.9 sensors rather than the older 4.2. I'm not sure what model you have but the 4.9 are supposed to be improved in many ways. I read a tech article a while back but forgot the details.

calibrating the gauge to TS really isn't difficult and I've come to the conclusion that there isn't any 1 set of universal values to use. Just adjust until it's perfect. it's linear

But on a serious note, after using both an UEGO and MTX-L I can say I dislike them both, mainly because of the display. I've also heard a lot of people say they like the AEM because it does not have to warm up and starts displaying immediately, but I'm not convinced its accurate until its warmed up so its kind of a wash. |

happy uego user here. sorta.. gauge reads fine but it outputs funny numbers to my aem box and messes with my afrs with o2 control on. I just leave it off as i have a pretty good tune.

I have owned an AEM UEGO with the 4.2 sensor in my WRX. ZERO Issues.
I now have an AEM UEGO with the 4.9 for the miata. At my buddies shop we run AEM on all customer's cars when they ask for a wideband. We have had zero returned to us and no issues that i know of. You must have received a crap one. |

Honestly it took about 20 minutes from the driver's seat to dial it in via trial and error.
Here are my raw notes: default .3 off (ts > wideband) 4.5 to 19.98 .6 off 4.99 to 19.50 .2 off 4.99 to 19.40 .1 off ts > wbo TS was always greater than the WB. So yes, a bit richer... and of course (as Vlad points out repeatedly!) your results may vary. |
