Default series 1, vvt, 12+1 won't sync

94 with 2002 engine AEM series 1 30-1710.I have searched and read and re-read every thread I can find on this. I started with Jason_SBB, Savington's and J_man. I have also tried dozens of variations of these configs to get this car to sync, no joy. I have noticed slight differences, such as the first entry in ignition phasing. 2.64, 8.64 and 8.53.

The only difference I can find between my car and every other car running this setup is the damper and trigger wheel. I have the BHJ race damper and the trigger wheel is 3mm thick, instead of sheet metal and the teeth on the wheel are about 4mm long.

I had to special order the trigger wheel and it took 6 weeks to get it.

So i have three questions at this point;
1. Is anyone using the race damper with the 12+1 wheel?
2. will the thicker wheel cause a different pulse than the sheet metal wheel?
3. will the teeth being 4mm long, instead of the ~ 1mm of the factory and TSE 12+1 wheels cause a sync issue where some times the two will overlap (which I have learned is not going to work).

I'm so frustrated right now, I have put about 50 hours into changing the cal file to try and get this to work. I'm at the point where I want to remove the wheel and grind the teeth to the same size as the factory wheel.

I forgot my other computer at the shop so I don't have any cal files to post. I will post a couple tomorrow morning when I get back to the shop.

Step 1. Use the (fast) internal logger and log A_Teeth. See that is goes from 0 to 24 or whatever. That will tell you that the crank pickup is seeing them.

The SPM dampers have differently shaped teeth as well. I use the exact same settings for our OEM-damper 12+1 wheels which have OEM-sized teeth, and the SPM wheels.

Thanks Jason, the log shows 0-12 teeth, still no sync. I believe it was your post I read where you suggested calling AEM tech support and describing the crank and cam setup to get the sync strategy dialed in. I will call them tomorrow.

Thanks for the info on the tooth profile, I was considering (briefly) modifying the teeth to be more like the factory teeth. My thought process on that was the longer tooth would create a longer pulse that might cause some teeth to overlap.

Fortunately, I re-thought the whole modifying the teeth thing and decided BHJ must know what they are doing when it comes to dampers and trigger wheels.

I was just put in contact with an AEM certified tuner, and between him and AEM tech support I'm sure we will get this figured out.

Thanks for all your help. I will post the solution once I get the car running.

I tried to attach the cal file I'm using, but when I look in the same location that the file is stored in-C:\program files\AEM\AEMPro, the only cal file I see is sample.V1.19

I have checked the wiring ( I did not wire this car originally ) and am using injectors 3, 4, 5 and 6. Coils are 1,2,3 and 4. The VVT is rough, just trying to get it to start so I can get on the dyno.

basic gut instinct tells me to ask. did you wire in the crank sensor right? or did you mix up the cam and crank wires.

Tooth control is incorrect.

You have 0-11 at 5, 12 at 3, 13 at 0.

You need to set 0-11 at 5, 12 at 4, 13 at 3, 14 at 0.

Some people say there is no such thing as a stupid question, I disagree. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask.

I have verified the wiring and when I am cranking, I see 12 teeth on the crank and 2 on the cam.

Thanks Savington, I'll give those settings a try this afternoon.

If you set the fuel teeth and the wheel teeth to 12, the Tooth Control table as you have it will be correct. There are a few ways to set the combination. You don't seem to have much information on your sync setup. Do you know that you are counting sync teeth and that you have the correct "sync teeth" value?

He's not using the sync teeth value, IIRC. I don't believe it's used with his sync strategy. He's using Sync MX, as he should be with the trigger wheel he has.
