EMS 4 on an 01 NOOB beware
As the title states I am a noob to the while tuning aspect mmuch less AEM computers. Also as stated I just got my just released EMS 4. I am having my coworker help me with the harness, but I want to learn how to do the computer work. I have been messing around with the V2 software to get the hang of it and familerize my self with it.
The car will have 550cc injectors, the rotrex, and a built engine. My goal is to run max 250hp. I will add an intercooler (in due time) later. Has anyone used this new computer yet? Does anyone have a file for the 01+ engine that I can look at? Any helpfull advice besides read the book? I am removing the egr, the alternator will be switched with a NA 1.8 alternator, AFM will be gone and I have no P/S or A/C. I am planning on the running stock sensors, VVT, stock coils, MAP, variable intake, Thank you in advance for any help. Have a great day, Jared |

Those ECU's are interesting. I played around with one in an AEM booth during a trade show. Slick & inexpensive. Good luck with it!

Can any one confirm if the 01+ coils have the ignite in the coils.

Thanks for the reply. Sorry to hijack your post but I'm having grief with my 01 plate vvt. Everything under bonnet is marked bp4w and ecu is marked bp6m. Just interested to see what yours was as I think it's the same model. Thanks again.

You should be able to start with the cal file for a '94 and go from there. You'll be doing a lot of alterations, though. Start with reading through the entire AEM section, giving specific attention to my "stupid questions" thread as well as any thread/post by J_Man or Jason_C.

Ok, so I got my car running. My coworker who is doing the tuning spent all day on sunday building a map from scratch. He didnt get the IAC or VVT working. He ended up burning up a coil as well.
Car drove well, but for the lack of the IAC. Start up was a bitch. Come to find out there was some feedback in the adapter harness he built. On tuesday he was working on locating the source of the feedback and getting the IAC working. He managed to burn up at least 3 more coils. Saying that it was from him trying to set idle. I personally have no clue how that works but maybe you all can fill me in. Usually he is good with this, but I am loosing all confidance in him at this point. Since now he shows absolutely no intrest in working on the car. His solution is to use the 1.6 or 1.8 coils and plug wires. To me this is completely unaceptable. He also complains that he cant get vvt to work on the factory cam and crank snesor wheels. I need help to get my girl up and running. I am getting so tired of not her running. Jared, email me the cal file and let me take a look. I discussed dwell with him today, there's no reason to be nuking coils.

He shouldn't be burning up coils. The ECU would be setup the same for the NA coils as they are the NB COPs. The output edge anyway. He either has the output edge wrong (in which case he most likely wouldn't be able to get the engine started) or he's simply using way too much dwell.
He probably won't be able to get the VVT working with the factory cam/crank combo. We're running into a similar issue with Haltech and the VVT engine. We'll need to add another cam target on the exhaust cam for a static angle reference. I haven't looked at the EMS-4 much, but without proper trigger coding in the firmware for the unique Mazda trigger, any ECU will struggle to run the VVT. |
Looks like a pretty cool unit. Given the few extra features it has over my Haltech I might have gone this direction had it been out when I was ECU shopping. Is the idle control closed loop or open loop?

The way the Series 1 ecus calculate dwell and the way the series two/EMS 4 calculate it are different so the numbers don't just convert over. They are really close but at 1000rpm the dwell changes enough to burn up the coil. I suggested to use early coils because we have them in the shop. He didn't have any money to buy more coils. So, I was just trying to help him out because of the short time constraints.

The OP shows no appreciation in all the time and effort I have put into this project for him. I have made and installed all of his components for way less then cost and spent 10hrs on the dyno for $200 total. He always wants to do it his way and takes no input from anyone else but, has no competence in completing any of the work himself. running your mouth with no factual information because you are frustrated with your own issues is not a way to get your car completed.
