Has anyone used knock sensor input to switch ignition maps in FIC/6 on a Miata (2000)
 

I am trying to map out a path to increase the boost in my M45. I currently have the CARB setup running about 5psi and a locked PC. I would like to end up with about 8 psi when I'm done.

I want to use the AEM FIC/6 as I start a progressive path to more power. I am looking to use W/I to control knock and keep timing. What I want to set up is a knock sensor to trigger the fic to switch to a limp mode timing map. This will require a ground switch input to the FIC.

I've searched this forum and the W/I forum to find if someone has done this with a FIC before. I see where the AEM standalone can be configured to deal with knock sensor input, with some additional tweaking, but found nothing on the FIC.

Any input? Being a Noob, maybe I am barking up the wrong tree, or this dog won't hunt. (Yes, I live in LA--lower Alabama)

Looks like the 17 people who look at the AEM posts don't have much to say on this. May be a dumb noob question and folks are being kind to me and not flaming me?

Moderator(s), can you suggest a forum where I might get some more response on wiring the Knocklite output to a relay/switch that sets a ground. I looked on some electronics sites, but honestly have little understanding of the hardware or software needed to do the job.

Why worry about knock? If you tune it properly you will never have to worry about it, especially with a supercharger at 8psi. Also, every time I have experienced knock in a boosted miata, it's always 100% obvious. It's not like a bit of knock is going to destroy everything. You just need to fix your fuel/timing mixture if you get it.

I would also suspect the knock sensor works like any regular switch and only send a signal when it sees the proper conditions (knock). So it would probably put out a quick shot of voltage when it gets a knock, but not a sustained voltage. So even if you could get the f/ic to have two different maps, it would only engage for a split second.

Seriously, it seems like you are way over thinking this whole thing. Just relax.

Oh and you don't need water injection for 8psi. I hope that helps, although like usual you'll probably want to slice me into several pieces.

dustinb, Thanks for the response. I may be over thinking things a bit, but have seen a grand total of two superchargers--including mine (the other was an Ubercharger). Since this is my DD, I am trying to be cautious with it. I have never tuned anything, so am trying to set things up in a way to give me some protection from myself. My hearing is so bad (54) that I wouldn't want to depend on it to save my engine.

On the Knocklite, I was considering something like a relay/breaker that would kick over to the 'safe' map and then would require a reset to go back to the 'normal' map.

No way I would slice up someone trying to help me out! Thanks for the input!

I noticed this in the MS forum. I think it applies here, so I figured I resurrect the thread to add this info...Looks tailor made to use with the FIC/6, if it is able to respond fast enough...

I have been working on trying to get Knocklite to work with MS (in this case DIYPNP) for ages and now its working. Knocklite has 2 spare wires that can be connected to a TurboXS D-TEC fueling system (not used by us), the yellow wire outputs a constant 5v and when knock is detected it drops to 0v, this is what MS is looking for to activate the knock sensor settings that have been set in tunerstudio. The main problem was the drop in voltage from Knocklite was so quick (microseconds) that MS could not see it (MS needs 10-15 milliseconds).
