Using 30-1710 on 96-97 Miata

Hi All,

Looking for a little edumacation on this.

I bought an Built motor/turbo kit and it came with an AEM EMS 30-1710 for 91-95 miata.
My car is a 97, are there any mods or harnesses I can buy to make this work?

Or is there anyone with a EMS for a 96-97 they want to trade???

I would get a hold of this guy:
Boomslang Fabrication - The Performance Wiring Specialists
And see if he can make you a harness adapter to go from 97 to 91. I have a 97 motor in my 90 chassis and I'm using the 30-1710.

Are the harness terminals the same? If so, I would get a 96-97 & 92 harness and move the wires to where they should be. If not, you can either see if Boomslang can make you an adapter harness or make one yourself. You'd need a chassis harness (for the connectors) from a 90-95 car and your oem 96-97 ecu to hack the terminals off of. I've made a few of these adapter harnesses myself; it takes some time, accurate wiring diagrams, and a helper to desolder and solder stuff together.

wow...I think I'll end up selling it... Boomslang doesn't have anything listed as a harness...

Me and wiring don't get along either.... I think I might end up selling this and picking up adaptronic or something similar...any interest??

TurboTim 02-06-2010 12:40 PM

I'll give you $200 for it.

I found miata 97-94 harnesses on boomslang's site. $150
Custom Work

Under extension harnesses they have 97 miatas and 95-90 miatas, so they have the terminals. A simple wiring diagram would be all that's needed for them to make what you need, and they have simple wiring diagrams.

It even says "please call for any harnesses not listed". You fail.

Generally speaking...
Any ECU that works with a 94-95 will also work with a 96-97. The only significant differences you are going to run into are going to be the order of the pin out. This can be accomplished by moving the pins around on the 96-97's wiring harness, or by building a jumper harness between the 96-97 ecu harness and the 94-95 ECU.

....ok.... I fail, and you, Tim, went above and beyond! Thank you!
I will call them Monday to see what they can do...until then...mine is listed for trade... i figured why not...

Thanks Ben too!

If i don't get a trade for another one for my car... I'm definately calling Boomslang to make me a conversion harness...

Preluding 02-10-2010 02:45 PM

Just got off the phone with Boomslang...
I was told they don't want any part in the conversion harness because there hasn't been much luck in the past with it.

So i guess my EMS is still up for trade.

We used to Repin the 96-97 harnesses for the Link ECU that FM used to sale. On my 97 it took about 2 hours to do, you might want to see if FM has the old wiring instructions laying around.

I'll take a look, got someone on here getting me a pin diagram as well... I'll see what that looks like.

Is it hard to take the pins out and relocate them???

Red94 02-14-2010 12:56 PM

It wasn't too bad once you figured out how to. Personally I would just call boomslang up and see if they would sell you connectors/pins and make your own adapter harness if they refuse to. Its much easier to sit on a bench and build it, than hunch over behind your seat repining.

dustinb 02-14-2010 01:38 PM

The full pin diagrams are inside the PDF manuals for the EMS.

Red94....that...i will definately do... I was in garage this weekend imagining myself doing this and it hurt thinking about it.

dustinb - Found EMS manuals for the 30-1710(90-95) & 30-1720(96-97). I'll order a female 96-97 connector and a Male 90-95 connector with wires and pins to go into both.

Hopefully, all this info will be enough to create a harness on my own from the bench in my basement (and not in the freezing cold garage)

if anyone disagrees or has anything else they feel I need.... LET ME KNOW!

I heart mt.net

Brain is the man... he built me a harness...

I plugged it in and it started up with the base tune loaded...
