BBFW spoiler install

BBFW shipped fast and got it installed this weekend, thanks (turbofan) for the hand..

Everything was pretty straightforward, now I have to figure out how to use it, this will be my first foray into any sort of aero.

Quick highway run, I can see in the rear mirror it will move up and down from the play in the support rods on the bolts. Is it safe to say this causes no problems? Tightening the bolt on the bracket would prevent the play but it seems this would cause problems when adjusting the support lengths.

Last question, does anyone know of a good thread or link that I could as a good starting point for setup. Car is used for smallish autox lots and track.i

Where is the play? In the rod ends? Or in the turnbuckles. The turn buckle lock nuts should be tightened down (they aren't in the first picture, can't tell in the second)

oregonmon May 16, 2016 12:11 PM

Play would be where the bolt goes through the rod end on the bottom bracket attached to trunk.

aidandj May 16, 2016 12:12 PM

Thats odd. Is the bolt too small for the rod end? Or is it side to side play?

Mazdaspeeder May 16, 2016 01:19 PM

So, how effective is that spoiler?

aidandj May 16, 2016 01:21 PM

About 3.5 downforces.

I've only driven a few street miles so far. But I'd love to hear others experience with it.

Car looks great :)

Should've zero play once everything is tightened down.
Is everything tight?

Thanks!

I did tighten bolts until they brackets pinched the rod end but then loosened thrm back up a bit thinking maybe there should be a little room for them to rotate when making angle adjustments. I'll tighten them back up and go play around on the street today. Rain has let up. :)

Thanks for the reply!

Post the video. The play is between the bolt and the rodend. Almost like the bolt is too small.

Blackbird May 16, 2016 05:06 PM

Huh?
Typical bolt clearance for a 1/4" bolt is 9/32" which is .281", I just measured the bracket and it's .265".
Again, once tightened this is A-okay.

For angle adjustment you loosen ALL the fasteners (including the ones holding the adjusters to the spoiler and the trunk), adjust your spoiler and re-tighten all the fasteners.

aidandj May 16, 2016 05:12 PM

Disclaimer. I have not seen this in person. Movement appears to be between the endlink and the bolt.

btabor May 16, 2016 05:23 PM

Looks to me that the bolt is too small.

Looks like you're insisting on finding a problem where none exist?
Nevermind that it's tried and true on hundreds of cars by now, typical bolt clearance for bolts between #5 and 7/16" is D+1/32" (D = Diameter of the bolt).
D+1/32" = .281".

Tighten the damn bolts..

acedeuce802 May 16, 2016 05:31 PM

Clearance hole + proper clamp load for joint friction > shear bolt

Listen to Moti. Clamp for use, loosen for adjustment. It looks a lot worse than it is because of the low motion ratio between the rod and the spoiler.

rleete May 16, 2016 06:04 PM

Tighten the bolt. If it really bothers you, make a bushing for the endlink. Plastic tubing should suffice, as long as it doesn't interfere with tightening.

oregonmon May 16, 2016 06:05 PM

Everything is tightened and no more movement. Thanks again.

I didn't assume each rod end (6) will need to be loosened/tightened for angle adjustment but it makes sense now.

Bolt clearance

Just for S&Gs, thought we should put one more nail in the coffin of the bolt clearance "issue"...
So as I'm putting the clutch on the engine for Morpheus I grabbed the calipers and took a quick measurement of the bolt size and hole clearance, guess we better make some bushings for that one too, just like almost everything else in the car :giggle:

So how functional is this thing and what speeds is it designed to be used at?
