Issue with Singular Brake Ducts
 

At the behest of our mechanic we moved from a diy brake cooler to the Singular vents. After 8 hours the outside of the rotor started cracking badly where the inside half of the rotor was fine.

It appears the vent location is aimed at the inside rotor face and not the central hub where air can vent out the center of the rotor for even cooling. I have a feeling it's also disrupting the normal airflow through the rotor vents.

Luckily the race was shortened due to weather otherwise these vents would have ruined a very expensive race weekend.

Has anyone else has this issue?

We are going back to DIY, but this seemed like a big enough issue that people should get a heads-up about it.

I personally never liked how they just dumped air onto the back face of the rotor. If you look at ducts on any other platform they all seal the duct to the rotor center. I made a set of ducts that do just that, it's not pretty trying to get a 3" duct squished around and sealed near the ABS sensor tab. If you remove that from the spindle it's opens up a ton of room. They have served me well and I have not faded 11.5"x.81" rotors with 250whp and now 400whp granted the 400whp hasn't been on a brake intensive track yet.

In contrast Vorshlag motorsports has been posting a lot about "brake deflectors" rather than ducts......I'm suspicious but Terry is a man of data, a buisness man, but a man of data.

That does look good, though the tunnels are obviously a key part of it, which would need some engineering to do on most miatas. The deflectors and brake hoses aren't necessarily mutually exclusive though, if the duct was mounted like Supermiata's Vegas, you could have both....

I have been using the OEM Porsche 997 GT3 brake cooling deflectors on the rear on my track miatas for years though. With removal of the dust plates, it knocked 100C+ off my peak rear disc temps vs just removing the dust plates with no cooling deflectors.

I closed off the outside edge of the singular duct to force air through the center. Not hard to do.

I swear google listens to my every word and sees thoughts in my brain. Decided it was easier to gather air and deflect rather than pipe it In. But FWD is a mess up there, so we didn't have much option.

as a bonus, I have convinced myself that the deflection also causes a boundary layer on the outside of the wheel. Picking us up an additional 5 to 10 mph on the straights.

I would love to see your data/get some more information on this. I'm not doubting you, just very interested. Picking up 5-10mph is huge on a big power track.

it was total bullshit. But since we dont have 2, 4"x8" ducts In the front air dam anymore, I wouldn't be surprised. Also going to knee kick the rear quarter panel. That's the secret for last mph.

we race VIR a lot, and those straights are very long. Like 5k feet each.

Yes, we had the same problem.

And ended up homebrewing from the singular as a template. Blocking of the forward facing end and half the vent to prevent the air surface cooling the inner rotor face.Forcing as much as we could to only enter the inner fin area.

Worked well after that.
