Solid Mount splitter vs breakaway
 
So I'm planning on making a splitter with these splitter ramps,. They are big enough though that the usual mounts on the side of the frame rail just isn't going to work. As you can see in the picture it has splitter rods (8 of them in total - 4 behind the bumper, 4 in the airstream), which everyone says is a no no, but a lot of the top cars have them. My other option is I could build a very stout frame just behind the lower bumper and hard mount the splitter to a solid steel bumper support that sits above it. My splitter will not be quite as big, so I think I can build it to not flex if it has a sufficient number of mounts behind the bumper. This would be very stout and I think I can do it without any rods in the airstream, but it's by no means going to be breakaway. Anyone have any opinions? I'm leaning towards the multiple rod attachment as it could be slightly easier to remove, and the idea if it being breakaway I like.

1. I've attached mine with a thin gauge bracket attached to the front core support and then the rear of the splitter is bolted to the subframe. This wasn't really needed but it helped add some redundancy. Combined with the airdam connection and four supports at the front I don't need any additional support.
2. You could just attach a support to the ramp if you needed to.
3. Make sure you are running a shield on the backside of your front rotors. Mine rotors started cracking almost instantly(4 laps) after adding the ramps. The inside rotorface will over-cool since the ramps will send air directly to the rotorface when turning. I also had the same issue with the singular ducts because they are an awful design and direct air to the rotor face, not hub. I made my own with tin snips and they work great.

My splitters are mounted with a rigid aluminum mount and a couple steel cables, all behind the bumper. The front/center are rigid and the edges are more flexible and held in tension with the steel cables. Most contact the splitter sees are on the sides and the cables have worked well for that. My splitter is also wood, so any heavy contact has just chipped away at the splitter and my mounts have stayed healthy. In other words, my breakaway is the splitter itself. Not sure if this is helpful, but a wood splitter is cheap and will easily last a few years.

We have found it best to use cables. That supports the plate in tension under downforce but still allows it to move up if you go off. Fore-aft, we build it to be kind of breakaway. Just strong enough and no more. If its too robust in a head on hit, it'll buckle and tear your intercooler, oil cooler and everything else apart.
So overall, the strength is only straight down under aero load, and weak ever other direction. That's maybe a thousand hours of track time over 15 years, multiple cars, classes and competitions.
