That's 2.5" piping, right? Can that be done in 3"?

Swan843 12-11-2011 03:42 PM

i dont knw i saw on his original post it said he does 3". but if thats 2.5 then its perfect

Yes, I still make them. I can make it in either 2.5" or 3" and with any size muffler that fits under a Miata.

3" piping fits just fine with a 5x11x22 muffler:

Wow, you don't even have to cut off the straight sections on the muffler, crazy. Nice job Abe.

what brand exhaust hangers are you using?

hustler 12-12-2011 04:28 PM

I could get one of these exhausts and use the mirror on my shower floor to show off the weldz.

ARTech 12-12-2011 10:27 PM

ARTech brand :) I make them myself with a tube/rod bender.

The problem with these big mufflers is the weight is not evenly distributed using the 3 factory points. You'll either have to add a hanger on the on the drivers side or use urethane hanger mounts. I use these:

Beautiful work!

Can you make them in mild steel to save money? You can ship them to CA, right?

The 5x11x22 muff pictured above uses the centered-inlet / offset-outlet version. Magnaflow make an offset/offset version (below). Would this allow a larger radius bend on the muffler's inlet? Or would said large radius hit something?

Thanks.

I get a decent deal on SS. I doubt I could make them much cheaper in mild, so I prefer to stick with SS. Yeah, I ship exhausts anywhere within the US, and other, smaller parts all over the world.

IIRC, the offset exit muffler doesn't work as well because it will either contact the tow hook bracket and or the fender liner on the other side. The center/center works fine for me. 3" diameter on a 4.5" turning radius isn't that tight. I've had to use 3" on a 3" turning radius before on a dual exit large muffler setup before:

Anyone have a youtube recording of said 5x11x22 Magnaflow muffler with 3" piping, from behind the car?

Swan843 12-16-2011 12:25 AM

^bump for that. if you dont have a video but have the exhaust MAKE ONE!!

vehicular 12-16-2011 12:36 AM

How much purge gas do you go through on an exhaust like that? Would you consider using Solar Flux in a pinch? Do you have any experience with it?

paNX2K&SE-R 12-16-2011 12:58 AM

What would be a ballpark cost for a 3" SS with the 5x11x22? Any chance on adding a resonator or 2 on the straight section? I like the dogleg mufflers better since they tend to be more quiet but a resonator would probably help reduce some of the noise on the straight in/out muffler that fits better in this application.

ARTech 12-19-2011 11:55 AM

Yes. Solar flux would be fine to use if not using a cat, or anywhere after the cat, if using one. You don't want that stuff chipping away and clogging up the cat. I'm not sure how much gas I go through. I have a big bottle and it lasts a while.

A 3" exhaust with a 5x11x22 muffler, no cat/resonator, is $550. Magnaflow resonators are $70/ea. I'm not familiar with the dog leg mufflers, but the little info I can find online suggests they don't make good turbo mufflers. A straight through design, like Magnaflow's is the best you can use. Who sells dog leg (center expansion?) mufflers anyway?

paNX2K&SE-R 12-19-2011 12:02 PM

Ok cool that sounds pretty reasonable for a nice exhaust. When I say dogleg I'm talking about a muffler with an offset inlet and/or offset outlet. How much lead time is there between the order and the shipping of the finished product?

ARTech 12-19-2011 12:39 PM

I see. In that case, an offset inlet/outlet is just an additional, unnecessary bend that makes the piping longer and/or makes it harder to mount the muffler depending which way the offset is facing.

Lead time is normally 6 weeks, but I am taking a little break for the holidays so that doesn't apply to orders placed this week or next ;)

slmhofy 12-24-2011 11:00 PM

Your work is beautiful. Just curious if you've any experience with MSMs? I know at least the downpipes are different.

ARTech 12-26-2011 11:30 PM

Thanks. I can only build turbo-back MSM setups for now. I don't have a stock downpipe to use as a starting point for exhausts.

BigDmiata 12-27-2011 12:58 PM

Abe, I have a stock MSM downpipe sitting in my garage you can use. I'm wanting a 2.5" exhaust with a round magnaflow muffler similar rear routing to aaronc7's exhaust.
