So some goodies showed up yesterday and my friend tossed them in. '13-'14 GT500 injectors and the FlowForce BYOI kit. Four for me, four for my friend. Total cost will be $190.5 for each of us (set of 8 injectors was $241 after shipping). I am super impressed with the flow force stuff.

While my friend was doing that he found the crack I posted above. So today...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1466125134

And yeah, that manifold is done, done, done. Ebay manis? Don't do it kids! Explains why it wasn't spooling until 4500rpm...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1466125134

Can anyone identify the turbo that came off? Sorry about the blurry pictures. I will scold my friend.

Someone please correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure the gt500 injectors have a split pattern and should be oriented so that the plug is pointing straight up.

I am 98% positive that they do and I totally forgot to mention that to my friend. Thanks for the catch!

Turbo, mani and downpipe are in with temporary hotside piping. He needs to have this movable out of his parents driveway by Friday, so he is reusing what he can.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1466549464

The turbo tony downpipe is a lot longer than the one that was on the car and runs right into the resonator, meaning the whole exhaust system needs to move back.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1466549464

I am sorry to admit that this solution was strongly considered for far longer than it should have been.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1466549464

turns out the resonator is off a hyundia or a kia!

Well, everything made it in and the car was driveable not long after the last post. My friend said it was running better than ever (probably the new injectors) and was working on tuning it. Two days later, it stalled out at a light and hyrdrolocked due to excess fuel. With a bunch of testing we concluded it would need to be towed home (though now with a clean spot under the hood from the fuel that gushed out the spark plug holes.)

Between work, a trip, and the move, my friend did not have much time to work on the car. He did a bunch of trouble shooting, checking the ignition system (it was obviously getting fuel!) and the timing as well as other things. Just yesterday, we stumbled uppon a know quirk of the Link ECU. Apparently, if the sensor ground gets interrupted, it decides that that means the engine needs all the fuel. All of it, as in 100% duty cycle. This certainly explains why there was so much fuel. After fixing that, and changing the fuel... I mean oil, out of the crank case, the car is back on the road and running better than ever. Very impressed with the GT500 injectors. I hope to get a chance to drive it tomorrow evening.

Sorry, no picture updates. I will try to remember to snag some when I next see the car! As a side note, I just got my adapter kit in the mail today and will be putting in my GT500's shortly.

x_25 07-21-2016 11:07 AM

Update! The car ran and drove all night. Between the two of us it seems we have managed to ammass enough knoledge to not blow it up yet. Y'all guys are awesome. :greddy:

That said. Rubber plumbing bits don't like turbo heat.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0f4b95a127.jpg

We happend to be near a home depot so grabbed another and tried to reinforce it so it would last the evening (which it did).

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ca32c012bc.jpg

Getting something made to take the heat is now top priority.

The car is making 140kpa, dead steady. It varries only between 138-140 once spooled.

It makes positive pressure starting at 2300rpm (115kpa or so) and makes the full 140 at 3400 or so. Way bettet than I was expecting. Also, at 2500 or so in 5th pulling up a hill, you can hear the turbo spin up and it is wonderful.

Next big step is a clutch and crank it up. (Though turning it up a bit may happen before then, see if the stocker can hold 8psi).

I have to say I am super impressed with the base maps on the Link. Starts, runs and drives reasonably (certainly not perfect) on the base map. A bit rich, but that is preferable.

Braineack 07-21-2016 11:41 AM

You realize the heat is coming from the turbo and not just being inside the engine -- not sure what you expect to accomplish by wrapped your lunch in tin-foil...

stop being cheap and buy the correct coupler for the application. You're not installing a toilet.

x_25 07-21-2016 11:44 AM

Well aware. The aluminum tape was more to hold it together and strengthen it than for heat. That stuff is surpsingly strong. Goal was for it to last the night and possibly until my friend gets the parts to make something else.

deezums 07-21-2016 11:48 AM

So, just to clarify, you put a massive amount of duct tape inside the hot side plumbing? The same tube what sucks all the air your engine uses?

Seems legit. Duct tape has always held up great in my experience, hardly ever melts off grandma's old POS furnace every single year.

Aluminum HVAC tape (duct tape is the wrong thing for ducts!) And only on the inside parts that are held by the outlet of the turbo flange and intake pipeing (though we had to take the intake piping side off, since we couldn't stretch it enough to get it on). So only the first 3/4-1". Layring the inside where the air actually flows would have been stupid as it would get blown right out.

Although odds are the intercooler would have caught it had we actually been that stupid.

And for grabdma's furnace. Use the right tape and it will stop doing that. Duct tape is a brand, not a recomended use. HVAC tape is what you really want.

Braineack 07-21-2016 12:30 PM

Never claimed to be. But I do know duct tape is very much the wrong stuff. It will work for a temporary fix, but won't last forever.

Should be using bondage tape for that. Duct tape leaves an icky residue and gets caught in hair.

That makes me really tempted to use blue ones when I do my car.

This car's theme is red white abd black though. (Although the caps for the fuel injectors are blue, sadly).

Update time! Budget billies! Total cost? About $330. Using some B6 HDs that spent two seasons on a spec Miata (no leak, good shape, too cheap to pass up!). Set of coil over sleeves with 7" 350lb springs off amazon. Bump stops from a Mini and then 450lb springs from Summit.

My friend also made a little manual boost controller. It seems to work well, had the car running between 160 and 170kpa before, although the other night something changed and it was pushing to 194kpa. Man was it moving when it did that! Good news is, the clutch held, so we can hold off on doing that for a bit longer. May need to shorten the spring a bit or something? Who knows. Made from plumbing parts. It fits in nicely.

Now he just needs to get the exhaust patched up so we can tune everything that isn't boost. The 02 sensor reads lean at idle and cruise, but I can assure you it is anything but. It is fouling a set of plugs every other week and not burning oil. Pressure in the exhaust is high enough to make it so boost is reading correctly as far as we can tell.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e41ea90f1.jpeg

Since we were doing plugs so often on the Miata, we thought he should check the plugs on his daily. A 265k mile '98 Buick Regal. He hadn't done them in the 30k he owed the car, looks like the previous owner hadn't done them in a long time either....

He found out you can't follow a Subaru with 400TW all seasons that deep into a corner before braking if you car is running 700TW General RT43s. At least I managed to drill in that if you are going to go off, go off strait so you don't flip.

Good news is, no one is hurt, noone else involved, no property damage or anything else like that. As offs go, could have been a ton worse.

x_25 09-10-2016 11:03 AM

Yup, he's done. Put a fork on him. Trans tunnel is bent from landing on a rock it looks like, the windsheild frame is 1" away from the drivers quarter window, and the roof won't latch. If you site along the body, the front is twisted relative to the rear. It also looks like the driver side front sub fram rear.mounting point is pushed over half and inch inboard or so.

The whole driver side front suspension is toast, subframe ears are bent, crank pulley is bent (motor sounds healthy thogh, no crank nose wobble). Steering rack looks bent a d binds up as well.

We got him back to my friend's place on a u-haul dolly yesterday, towed fine behind his 98 Regal. We just kept it slow. Probably going to strip all the good parts out and find a new shell.

Short term, it is just going to be a direct swap over with everything cleaned and an upgraded clutch and a few "While we are in there"s. Not much progress yet since my friend had his basement flood not long after getting the shell.

There is paint in the works, if we can find someone to do it cheap enough (if we do all the scuffing, cleaning, and masking first, anyone know anywhere local to north jersey?), or figure out a way to paint in the dead of winter without a shop (haven't really figured that one out yet).

Car is mostly stripped. We got the engine and trans out last night. Just need to get the wiring harness and brake system out now. Turns out the subframe is really bent. The engine mount studs did not want to come out of the holes. Thankfully, the driver side mount was just about done and just pulled apart with enough jiggling and prying.

It was my friend's first time pulling an engine, so he had to pose with it.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...782415e241.jpg

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...72bdf6a172.jpg

Turns out the steering rack got hit a bit harder than we thought....

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...55a627c3a5.jpg

And something is growing in the #3 exhaust port? Coolant? If so, the only way I can think it would have gotten there is a cracked head.... Half tempted to just put it in, toss in some Subaru coolant conditioner (RadWeld) and see what happens.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3c5c8da8e7.jpg

x_25 03-12-2017 10:06 PM

My friend decided he needed a garage to work in with the way the weather is around here. $160 from Harbor Freight later and he has one. This thing is actually super nice. Add some 11W LED lights and it is a pleasure to work in.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f9bddcb449.jpg

Also, we decided we really didn't like the idea of a cracked head with what appears to be coolant in the exhaust port, so $300 we snagged a replacement 1.6 locally. Will be getting some new seals and a timing belt job before getting slapped in.

All laid out and being picked and checked over. New wires being run for gauge power, IAT, boost control, wide band and the like.

The last of the after market cruise control and alarm system were annexed. Had to fix everywhere it was spliced in...

Some of the splices we made. Non insulated crimps and heat shrink works nicely.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...99ef7ad330.jpg
Repaired, re-pinned and re-wraped ecu wires. I actually ordered new pins off digikey to fix some of this... The zip ties holding the new wires are temporary. We forgot to pick up more tape, so they will be loomed and taped nicely once more is acquired.

Added a fused power run to run the gauges off a relay switched by ECU power.

Custom exhaust got done last week on Friday. 2.5" out of the turbo for the first 8" or so, with a divorced waste gate, then right up to 3", flex pipe, resonator and right out the back. Slight trim to the shelf to get it to fit nice.

So updates. The exhaust sounds amazing. Not too loud, nice throaty rumble. No real ricer buzz or anything.

Also, car is rolling on the road! After a new battery first thing in the morning, it made the NJ Miatas meet and did over 200 miles on it's first day out. Our good friend Justin shot an amazing roller as well.

The day was not without event. Turns out the former turbo water line (now just a bypass for the thermostat) that runs off the cursed waterplug tap was lacking a clamp... Or rather, that clamp was 3" down the hose, rather than where it should be. Took about an hour of waiting for things too cool down, moving things, and cursing, to get it back on.

The art of getting the line back on the back of the engine, with a spacerless rerout hose in the way....

Oh man, this car has been though so much since I last updated this thread for Dev, lol. Including another crash, new front subframe, upgrad (19T) to the turbo, a kraken manifold, and the Link finally got flakey enough we threw a Speeduino at it to play with. Curious to compare it to a rusEFI. I have started really getting into learning the difference between different ECU and EFI systems.
