On the mud guards, I've found that the painted rears hold up great (mine are at ~5 years on a tracked 212K car).
The fronts are lower and will scrape and bend. I ended up amputating the lowest flexible part of my fronts. Need to get them repainted.

Sorry, I have to do real work in the bakery for once! My accountant messed up 10 months of reconciliations so I had to go back in and redo them...not an easy task.
Yeah she is an awesome dog, super fast. All lung, no brain. I wish she was mine but I don't have the yard or the time for one currently.
I'm headed back down to work on the car tonight, so hopefully I'll have some real updates for y'all when I get the engine all put back together and dropped in the car.

Btw. i have my Trisha-Project car inthe same state (front fenders off) atm. and I just finished a coat of Fluid film Fluid Film® | Corrosion Preventative, Lubricant and Rust Inhibitor followed by a coat of Perma Film PERMA FILM - about us - both product come from the marine industry and are very much the holy grail in rust protection on oldtimers over here...
Just to say, as long as you have the fenders of anyway, you could protect them a bit more...

Sounds almost like interior panel wax spray. Never heard of it before.
Need to research that stuff a little simply due to the fact that it sounds interesting. Not sure how it works with it not "drying".
Hornet nailed it on the head though. 0% humidity and being a high elevation arid desert climate the car will never have a problem as long as it isn't driven during the winter.
I like how it is able to be sprayed in nooks and crannies though!

The advice to clearcoat the intake manifold was good advice. Looks great and contrasts the valve cover great!
Also the alternator looks good too. I have no idea on how to test 20lbs of force for 1/2" of deflection for the perfect tightness.
Also polished the flyin miata adapter so it would match the I.M better.

Diverted my attention again. I have cleaning ADD.
Got rid of all the nasty on the rubber shift boot and cleaned all the old grease out of the shifter ball joint.
Also painted the steering rack segment and cleaned all the sand/grease out of the boot.
The vinyl shift boot is torn so I am going to replicate it in leather later.
No more rust and protected. Didn't need to be perfect since this is the segment covered by the rubber boot.
Trying to decide if I want to be lazy and give the steering wheel to a upholstery shop or try to do it myself.
Does anyone know if you need to reinstall this if you are only running the hardtop? I don't think you do which makes me mad that I spent the time grinding the rust off it and repainting it.
Center console arm rests are trashed on both of them. Might recover them in leather/vinyl.
Both of these are pretty cracked and faded and scratched too. Ditto on maybe recovering them in vinyl/leather.
OR just not putting it back in at all and finding a diy solution.

about the wheel - give it to a pro, its one of those things that has to be done flawlessly or it will bother you for the rest of your life

I had to rethink covering the console in leather, not only would that be hard as ***** but I'm not sure how good it would look.
I was leaning towards refinishing it with the OEM looking trim paint I used on the wipers.
I'd rather repaint it in a year if needed, plus it is super easy to do as long as you sand the scratches and fill them well. I used a high build primer on the stock headlight housings and it turned out great.

I removed my rails when I took out the softtop. Carpet stays in place well enough without the clips. You'd never even notice unless you were looking.
Think of it as a minor weight savings.
