94 FM2 to vtakkk gt3071
100 Attachment(s)
This build basically stems from the combining of two of my miatas, a stipped out track slut and my turbo street car. My 1991 miata had been stripped, braced and swapped to a 1.8. It was fun to learn how to handle a rwd on track, I come from racing evos and quite a bit cheaper.
I came to a cross roads though, do I add more power to the 1991, or do I switch everything over to my FM2 94 r package and start with a better shell. The 91 has rust issues and various other problems were popping up, one of which was the area around the diff mount was cracking. After dealing with the stuggles, I saw a post by David of Kmiata and started looking into that. After reading through Andy Hollis' build I was sold. Strip the 91 and 94, convert to a kmiata, run for mayor. After selling all the extra BP specific parts I am left with; 94 r package -5 speed -swapped 3.9 torsen -revalved koni yellow coilovers -wilwood BBK -typical miata rollbar and bracing -horrible wiring issues from previous owner The plan is a basic k24a2 swap with a 6 speed conversion as well First things first, order 2.3 million parts and wait.. Only picture I have of the FM2 prior to parting it out https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438608637 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438608637 Came back from a convention in Chicago to see a lot of boxes. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438608637 2006 k24a2 from a local junk yard. I pulled the subframe and swapped everything over to the kmiata tubular frame https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438608637 So I have swapped all the front suspension over to the new subframe. I am waiting on new mounts for the NB rack (this is a requirement of the swap) before I can mount the motor and trans. I think I am going to be sourcing an s2000 trans in the near future as even on low boost I will still be in the 350hp/250tq range. Long term plans are cts rear and s2000 trans with custom drive shaft and cross member, but for now I will see if I can get it running with the miata 6 speed. |
I can't see pictures and its making me sad. Sounds like a cool build.
Dont those s2k transmissions like to break in 2nd gear even at low power levels? I thought the trannies along with the diff were the major weak points on the s2000. I assume its better than the miata 6 speed but by how much? |
I know of two locals who are running north of 500hp on stock s2000 transmission without issues in s2k's. I am shooting for 425ish hp and 300 ft lbs in a lighter chassis. I don't know o any other good transmission options for this setup.
Thanks for telling me about the pictures, I used the wrong bb tag |
Can't wait to see the progress on this. I've been waiting to see someone doing a kswap+turbo. Looks like you're off to a very solid start.

S2000 transmissions can hold a lot of power when shown some mechanical sympathy, in particular preloading at launch.
I thought for a second you were doing turbo K24 going though the miata trans and I was about to get out the popcorn https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1438616169 |
Oh it is starting with the miata trans. I am a glutton for punishment.
|
Are you expecting any fitment issues with that manifold/turbo?
Do you have a plan for getting the S2000 transmission mated up? I searched real quick and didn't see any K-to-F adapters and I assume the normal k-swap adapter won't work. |

Not expecting fitment issues, but that doesn't mean there won't be. David posted up pictures of the manifold in place with a similar sized turbo. One of the mounts is pretty close to the outlet of the compressor, but I think it will clear. Ballard motors ports makes and adapter and a flywheel. Search k20 in s2000 |
Looks good Chris, subscribed.
Let me know when you're ready to look into other trans options. I have some thoughts and ideas. But the S2000 trans is a great option. |
oh wow this is gonna be a monster
|
Hey David, I sent you an email about transmission ideas. If I could get a reliable transmission setup, I would run 20-25 psi and shoot for 500+hp just for fun. I will keep it dialed back to 10-12 psi for track duty.

I have been waiting for various odds and ends. Everything has finally shown up except for the IC piping and the poly vacuum lines.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440462152 While waiting for parts I threw the garagestar fender braces on https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440462152 Miata 6 speed bolted up https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440462152 After running larger fuel lines I was able to finally drop the body on the subframe. things should progress more rapidly now. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1440462152 Look Ma the hood even closes. |
How did I miss this thread? Awesome build. So glad you're local.
|
Give me that 6 speed before you blow it up :)
|
I debating on pulling it, I probably should. The bell housing has been cut for the Honda starter, but it doesn't effect its function. The real question is do I go with a T5 or and s2000 trans.
|
Whichever one you won't ever have to pull again when you want to turn up the boost :)
<br /> <br />Though the Miata diff will be questionable up at those power levels. |
After I get the swap sorted I will be throwing in a CTS rear diff.
|
Good plan. I want one of those.
<br /> <br />If the s2k is proven I would run it. We don't have much history on that t5 kit I posted. |

With all of my recent travels the project had stalled for a little bit, but now I am back on track. The radiator was placed, mounts were fabricated and the AN radiator hose ran
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 This is the belt you will need if you run the s2000 pulley with spacer. I spaced the alternator out with two spacers totaling 4mm. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 Because of intake and intercooler hose routing I was forced to mount the remote oil filter on the radiator mount. It will make oil filter changes extremely easy. It is hard to get a good picture, but there is only about 1/2 of space between the intake and the oil filter mount. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 This is in the middle of the wiring harness reduction. This is not required, but it makes tracing down problems a lot easier. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 Intake manifold mounted along with fuel rail. You can see the radiator fan mounted as well. I let a friend borrow my shear and brake so I haven't been able to build a shroud yet. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 Shows the 34 feet of space you have in front of the motor now. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1448181418 I will get pictures of the turbo coolant hoses that I ran. Luckily there is space to run the lines under the motor using the same area that the steering rack uses. The lines have a ton of space and are protected by the subframe The valve cover is at the powdercoater at the moment. While I was waiting for parts, I installed the wilwoods front and rear, mounted the lotus seats and have been messing with different ideas for gauges. I will be finishing the vacuum line routing, FPR install and engine wiring soon. I am still waiting on my larger Tial wastegate as well. I hope to have the car running in December. |
