Ah crum, I hope you are able to get things back in order sooner than later. I'm curious what information comes of the knarly lifter bucket.

Maybe I missed it, but has the engine been broken in yet? arent you still having major tuning and basic running issues? I'm the worst person to be saying this, but shouldn't you iron stuff out first before ragging on it at an autocross?

Engine has 800 miles on it. At least. Plenty broken in. Having a VVT issue. But that's not really stopping me from driving. Cam is just always retarded. Replacing valve stem seals right now.

And hopefully the second set of SUBs doesn't get trashed. And if it does I have to tear the motor down anyways.

Oh and it runs great. Idles nice. Revs real smooth.

Autocross it is.

Cliff notes:

Engine break in. No boost goes well.
Light smoke probably valve stems
Turn up boost to 10psi
Get greedy want more
Accidentally spike to 30psi
25psi glory pulls
Pull spark plugs signs of Det
Pull cams to do valve stem seals find trashed lifters
Drop valve keeper down oil drain
Order 8 new subs
fish out valve keeper.

I hit the 300 mile mark on my bottom end driving to the dragstrip, 2 years and some change later the bottom end is still doing fine. I think you're plenty broken in, the only thing I'm worried about is why your shims are failing, the rest is looking solid. The only thing I can even think to recommend is to put engine assembly lube on the new subs during installation.

Whole valve train was coated in assembly lube before start.

Trust me. I'm also worried. But I have no evidence of why they break. So I'm going to try 8 more. And if that doesn't work I'll figure something else out.

Im not asking this because of your cam issues---

is this the oil you used for initial start-up/break in? I just want to make sure I got the right stuff for my engine

Yup thats the stuff. Used 15 quarts of it.

5 for initial start up. Run for a minute. Drain oil.
Another 5 for about 5 miles of break in.
Another 5 for another 50 miles.
Then 10w-30

This is what my head looked like after I finally fished the keeper out.

Good luck getting anything down that thing.

Leakdown tester worked great for compressing the valves. Would use again.

All new valve stem seals. Waiting on new lifters. Hopefully will show up tomorrow, and will be driving again on saturday.

Curious for my own knowledge. When you did all the oil changes so close together, did you see anything at all besides clean new oil pouring out?

I usually do 100-300 miles or so before doing the first oil change, which is basically driving it 2-3 times in a couple days.

How did you get 5 quarts into the motor? Were you just overfilling it?

It was my first time assembling a motor. And I was paranoid. Wanted to keep a close eye on things. Only clean oil came out.

The lifters on the intake side are trashed. Check a few pages back.

I have a giant oil cooler. And it's more like 4.5 quarts. But I buy 5.

The side with the VVT actuator that is giving you trouble?

Vvt actuator is fine. It's the megasquirt giving me the trouble.

Thanks for stirring the pot tho

It is hard to ignore I bet most of us were thinking along the same lines.

I thought the same thing. But the vvt issue is intermittent. When it works it works great. And reads correctly. It's just like the megasquirt freezes. Doesn't read cam angle or update the target angle. Or the duty cycle. Then when it unlocks it goes back to working fine.

Currently I just have vvt enabled, with duty cycle locked to zero. Angle always reads closer to zero. And yet the target angle still gets "stuck"

Didn't we have a similar problem with mine at one point?
