Turns out it doesn't have subs so I'll be looking into that.

Looks like the Mazdaspeed buckets are reasonably priced. And then I can get a stack of super tech shims

Depends. It ads a big amount of reliability. And can save the motor on over rev because they don't spit shims.

IMHO, unless you're intending on revving it significantly past the stock redline (which I've heard some people say is not a great idea with the VVT head because it breaks intake cams or something stupid like that), then there are much better things to spend SUB-money on.

Consider that changing the shims and buckets later is a weekend job that doesn't even involve taking the head off. Spend the money on stuff that you can't get to later, better valves or something like that.

Doesn't better valves cost a lot more. Because not diy.

That was assuming I wouldn't stay stock size

Also this is not for choosing to rev higher. I've made my 1.6 see at lest 8.5k maybe 9k rpm. And somehow it didn't die (I think the HLAs are just so gummed up they are solid lifters now)

I would hate to do a 5th-2nd shift and toast everything.

When for ~$270 I could so subs and not worry.

How do you 5th 2nd shift? I mean, if you're downshifting out of 5th take it easy, getting into 4th is super easy, in fact i believe trying to force it into 2nd would be rather difficult at those speeds.

I've 3-2 money shifted before, tach was buried, nothing hurt as far as i know. Personal experience tells me, spending the extra money was worth it.

Lol. This is usually on the track. trying to get down through the gears fast. Last one happened on the front straight at laguna. Pulled it down and the shift kind of felt off, but then when i let the clutch out the tach looped around lol.

The twin disc makes it easy to get into any gear basically. Really easy.

So slow down when downshifting? You're doing it while braking, right? Plenty of time to do it right.

A friend managed to do a 3 -> 2 instead of 4 money shift on my car once. No damage, even with stock shim-over-buckets. Glad for my super light A-beam Carrillos there.

Personally I don't see any reason to do SUBs unless you're intending on raising the redline substantially. NA SuperMiata motors, yes, 7000 RPM turbo motors there's no point.

I've run my VVT head to 9,000 twice, 8,500 a few hundred times with the heavy double valve springs. Valve lash was set in 2013 and is withing 0.001 of what I set it at then today, and it's never spit a shim or anything. I think the people breaking intake cams on VVT motors had valve springs that were too soft to control the valves.

Parts in last pic can go in a box, no worries.
