Here it begins...

I'm really excited to get this project underway, I finally stowed away some cash and now I'm slowly starting to buy parts. Originally I had planned on buying a BEGI turbo kit because most of all the pieces to the puzzle would be right there and already done for me....see that's the problem. I'll learn more if I piece it together piece by piece and learn from my mistakes
and earn what I've built with blood, sweat, frustration and tears. This will be my first heads first dive into building a car. This is my second Miata I have owned and I really enjoy the car.

I've owned 2 STi's and loved them, they are far more pricey though so I decided to go with a 90's car. I think the Miata will be a great platform to learn on, I'm excited to learn how to tune with Megasquirt/Tunerstudio and the vast amount of knowledge I will pick up with this build. It will be slow, but fun. My Miata has some suspension stuff already taken care of and it also came with a CAI.

The first thing I bought for my build was an AEM Fail-safe wide band.. Next I plan on buying a MS3 built by Brain. Still need to do more research on if i'm going to go with the seq. fueling or not. I understand the concept but I need a broader knowledge base on this subject so I can make my decision. Then i'll start tuning, getting familiar with Tuner Studio and build from
there. Then most likely i'll get some bigger injectors, install and tune away. Get familiar with everything before I start seeing positive manifold pressure :giggle:

My goals...shit i dunno. I was planning on what i just mentioned above then forced induction and hopefully getting a set up with supporting mods that will net me around 200whp on 8-12 psi, mod dependent. I want to try and stay in the "safe zone" so if I want to graduate to a built motor I can from there. I just want quick and fun as shit car that I can enjoy.

Thanks,
Austin

Got my AEM sideband wired up and installed tonight. It looks great and fitment was spot on and no electrical tape was necessary to achieve that "tight fit" some people have needed when mounting the gauge in the vent. I hooked it up to the laptop and set the gauge to display vacuum for now since I am N/A. Having a friend weld up the bung for UEGO here soon.

This thing is slammed on its nuts. Looks like the owner took out the lock ring to make it that much lower. Gay.

I'll have to buy some new lock rings for these coil overs.

Cue brain: "something something photo looks like crap".

Not bad though, not bad.

^ what did you just say?

From what i've read, seq fuel is a lot of work for minimal benefits. For your goal I don't think it's necessary. Good luck with the build!

that's offensive to crap.

Thanks for the reply/input Cyotani. I figured it would be more appealing for the high HP crowd or the already experienced tuners that want maximum control over all the injectors. I'm been getting really excited about the build and been researching a couple hours a day on here trying to plot my next move. Gotta save up a little more money then i'll fire on Brainsquirt and start "tooning"

I'm at about the same stage in my build. I'd suggest reading these if you get a chance. A lot of good info.

Ah yes, Corky is the guy that Owns Bell Engineering/BEGI right? I just downloaded that book into my iBooks, hopefully this will distract me from Faelflora's build thread that I can't stop readying lol.

yup, that's him. The second is on engine management from the people that run diyautotune, the largest megasquirt distributor.

It's been a minute, time for an update. I bought a 95' Miata with 140k with a hardtop, 95 mitata link ECU, AEM Uego controller, racing beat full header back pipe, TEIN flex coilovers, 4k conversion headlights and other stuff as well for $2000 so i could take all the fixin's and then sell it. My best friend is lined up to buy it when he comes up for the holidays. I already got the exhaust on my car and it sounds awesome! I think i'm going to trade him my bilstein sport/eibachs/ground control set up for the TEIN flexe's on his car. I liked the way it felt when i drove it home to take it apart. A bit softer, more street friendly i'd say. Well here is a couple pictures with the hard top on and what not. Also i got most of the maintenence stuff out of the way as well such as AMSOIL in the tranny and diff, fuel filter, fresh NGK plugs and wires and fresh tires to burn up :giggle:

Must have a nose from an earlier car. No badge + "MAZDA" decal.

Need more progress. It's been 5 months. C'mon!

auzziebear 12-06-2013 06:58 PM

Ya I swapped the front clip from my 90' when I sold it to my buddy. It was in far better shape than the 96's. I want more progress trust me, I just recently enrolled in school again to get my bachelors thus channeling my funds elsewhere.

I never understand when people say "sequential........for the high hp guys....etc"
Precision is never just for high hp. In fact, most times you can cram a ton of fuel and air into an engine, and as long as you don't blow out the spark and flow enough fuel, you're gonna make more power. Rinse and repeat all the way to very high HP figures. Its one of the reasons old carb'd muscle cars are super fast but terrible to drive daily.

What sequential and other fancy new gizmos do is improve important things like idle, afr stability, resolution, and efficiency. Basically things we all use, whether 200hp or 400hp.

There's nothing wrong with running batch ignition/injection, but please don't write off great new technology as something only needed or useful to the high hp guys. Cause that's totally false
