Build : 2 Turbo Miata for a good cause!

21 Attachment(s)
Hi all,
My name is Alex from D&D Turbo Santé.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395

My friend Pablo and me met at school (automotive tech) and we were speaking of building Miatas and putting turbos in them. That's when D&D Turbo Santé was born.

This is us :

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395

And this is me showing a bit too much love to my cylinder head...

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395

Long story short, we decided it would be a good idea to do it for a foundation and pretty much film our way through all the steps of the build.
We're two young guys that love working on cars and we figured, why not raise awareness for the mental health cause, which we both are familiar with and show young people it's possible to get out of their funk through doing something you love.
After the cars are finished, we plan on leaving our cold Canada and going for a 2 months roadtrip down in the States to raise funds and awareness for our cause! Exciting, I know.

Sorry, I get carried away. Back to car stuff.:giggle:
We bought 2 1.8 engines, one that used to be automatic (we removed the original tranny and got a deal for it) :

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395

and one that's manual 5 speed.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395

I know, the valve cover is hideous.

Here they are, tied (somewhat) to the HUGE truck we rented to go pick them up.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395

And here they are, you can see under their skirts :jerkit:

Pablo's :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395
Mine :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395
Group picture :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395
Say cheese?

Overal we're pretty happy with the condition of the engines by the looks of it.
Those two had about 50-60k kms on them and we're bought from a JDM store here in Montreal.
Compressin rating on Pablo's engine was a bit better than on mine, but I suspect they threw oil in the cylinders in Pab's engine before the test... the sparkplugs were full of oil.

We're not going to fiddle with them too much. Simply changing the timing belt, tensioners, waterpump, filters, plugs and wires. (We ordered most of that from 949racing.com) Our power goals for both cars are between 220-250hp at the crank.
We're just doing this so it may stand a bit of a chance against the turbos and harshness to come... Maybe it will hold, maybe it won't, but that's out of our control.
While we were at it, we decided it would be a good idea to paint our valve covers...

Here are the worn out, Japanese 1.8 valve covers... Pablo's was dirty and old and mine was cheaply painted and chipping by just looking at it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391354395

Valve covers :

Pablo opted for a Chevrolet orange and a few coats of clear :
First coat (His paint was runny as f*ck)

and finished product :

While I chose a more subtle, low gloss-flat black thingy thing.

Finished product :

That was our first day at our shop so bear in mind we never did something like that before.
Feel free to comment and you can follow us on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/ddturbosante and Instagram at @ddturbosante
if you want more live coverage of the projects.

Also, keep your eyes peeled as we will put out some videos about our progress, they will be in french with subtitles in english!

We're headed back there monday if memory serves me right and I can't wait to show you guys some more!

Enjoy

De retour au garage,
L'enfer.

Je vais mettre des photos parce que vous aimez les photos

En premier les choses ce passaient relativement bien, on a finalisé nos valve covers. :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391490845
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391490845

Ensuite on a pogné la petite roue plein de fil d'acier pour grinder nos intakes, pas pire clean.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391490845
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391490845
Vous pouvez voir le côté de la tranny j'ai essayé la petite wire wheel sur ca en premier. Pablo's just being Pablo.

Ensuite on a enlevé l'air climatisé :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391490845
done.

Back again

Slow day today, didn't get much done... still waiting on parts from arlington which are taking forever
So, after all this fuckery with the timing and everything, we went and bought some clamps and other shenanigans for the job.
Also, I checked my old timing chain cover and found out it was already broken so that to order again, melted down around the crank so it's done. ffs
Here's how it sat when I started today
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391571829
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391571829
We struggled to get the crankshaft bolt off without it being strapped but PB penetrating oil and my 3/8 impact is just too beast for this hunk of metal.

Nothing else to do so after cleaning my throttle body, removing the waterpump and cleaning everything around that area I got to painting :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391571829
pretty much all the brackets I could remove I painted.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391571829
sprockets
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391571829

So I painted all the brackets, all the pulleys but the alternators lol, some ''thing'' that holds the intake and both motor mounts... really had to kill time. Took all the bolts to the bench grinder and made them all nice and shinyyy

annnnd this piece of rubber fell off my motor mount.. nice

So about that 94 miata.

Turns out the guy lived 2 hours and a half away.
We started our journey at 11am and as we made our way there a wild snowstorm appeared.
Massive amounts of white shit all over the road, going into a town that is full of steep hills, nightmare.

We went and checked the car out, it was owned by a 71 year old gentleman (very sweet) and well maintained.
Over 200 000kms on it, no body damage or rust. It was buried under a foot of snow in a tempo shelter thing, we had to shovel and icepick our way in there and it was hell. a cold hell.
Anyways, picture time

on our test drive, amazing how small the car is compared to a hyundai accent hatchback.
The car had summer tires on, kept sliding all over the place. Luckily we had no accidents but saw many. Just one close call where Pablo was perpendicular to the traffic on the highway we were driving on but he managed to get it back together.
Boss.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391664004

...we bought it.

Needless to say we drove 70kmh all the way back.

here it is sleeping peacefully in a garage.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1391664004

good night, I'm exhausted

turbofan 02-10-2014 02:52 AM

Lots of photos. So you guys are trying to do a how-to of all this? It seems like you don't really know what you're doing but I guess you're having fun which is cool. That little '94 looks like a nice car. I'm not jealous yet though :giggle:

Oh, and flat black low gloss thing is called "satin."

ddturbosante 02-10-2014 02:22 PM

Hi and thanks for taking the time to read our thread.
The plan is the record as much material as possible and we'll do what we can... Although the timing belt video was really interesting for us, we didnt do enough research prior to doing the work nd ended up clueless haha, we started school 6 months ago and we know a lot more about suspension, brakes and electrical stuff than engines so far.
Tonight I'll put up pictures of MY car now, which is equally as interesting but different.
Next step were planning to do brakes, suspension and bracing along with the clutch work... That should be a little easier haha
Pictures to come, stay posted!

pictures as promised !

Here's how we picked up last friday, car was jacked on all fours, ready to go through heart surgery.
Long work, not much got done though because Pablo wanted to go out. I had to follow because he'd take my car after drinking 5 beers, I didnt drink that night so I had no choice but to leave the work behind and to follow him there.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392080903

after a bit :

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392080903

I think I had just been done removing the power steering hoses and stuff. For those who wonder why the exhaust manifold is still on, blame Pablo.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392080903

Passenger side motor mount off, only have heater hoses to disconnect, tranny to unbolt and second motor mount and we're off. oh... and that shitty manifold.

and here'S how we left it

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392080903

that motor couldve been out that night but hey, shit happens.

on to good news and stuff that works
i bought MY car that i'll be rebuilding.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392080903
look at this dirty little slut
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392080903
to give you an idea, the car was as dirty inside as it was outside, i mean FILTHY DISGUSTING. don't wanna think about that anymore.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392080903
and here it is fresh out the car wash. thats my baby

that's a 1999 mx5, odo says 84000kms on it... which i do not trust. check engine light is on for that catalytic converter, smells like oil but pulls really hard. tranny doesnt slip for a sec, weak battery but runs strong. makes driving hella fun.

plan is ! next weekend i take the engine out and swap the head on my nb to my 94=97 block and fiddle with it a bit, then off to doing suspension work and all that good stuff.

www.facebook.com/ddturbosante
peace out ninjaz

turbofan 02-10-2014 08:33 PM

What kind of turbo is on the NB?

ddturbosante 02-11-2014 02:28 AM

Still undecided ... But size wise a gt2560.
Id like to by a ISIS replacement sr20det turbo for 300$ but im not sure of its reliability... Havent heard anything about it - its either that or the garrett $$$$

turbofan 02-11-2014 05:19 PM

No you said it pulls really hard. It's got to have a turbo on it already. V8 swap?

ddturbosante 02-11-2014 06:26 PM

No turbo, no v8, just a healthy engine :)

bikersam717 02-11-2014 07:09 PM

But it pulls really hard..
Cold side supercharger?

turbofan 02-11-2014 07:13 PM

I know I just can't figure it out. There's got to be something there I'm missing.

Miscalibrated butt dyno?

update time for you negative and pessimist fools.

been working short intervals on the car and thursday night we gave it a good push.
Today was just gonna be a breeze so here's what happened

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003

it's out, broke a few hoses, connectors and stuff but it's part of the job.
Also, some more parts came in
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003
so thats, timing belt kit, plug wires, plugs, oil fiter, fuel filter, headgasket, throttle body gasket, valve cover gasket, intake gasket, front crank oil seal and waterpump.
Still waiting on all the timing covers and gaskets and some more bits and bobs to put the engines together ( mine only, pablo's just getting refreshed)

Mostly working on Pablo's car lately, mine's still on the road plus I'm waiting for some more parts to really get into it. (Plus pablo wanted to do his car first, so i'll know what not to do on my car  ) His car is just a nightmare to work on, it's full of that rust treatment stuff which is like thick, black oil. It's everywhere. I hate it
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003

After some fiddling around,

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003
naked

Pablo left with some chick so I had the whole garage to myself after that and this guy looking at me
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003

Since im planning on putting the head of my NB on this block I figured why not get to it now..
Removed the head rather easily.. 3/8 impact works wonders
Still wondering if I have to switch my CAS from my NA block to my NB... I'll check it out.

Anyways here it is when I got done.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003
Looks fairly decent, it's dirty but no damage to the cylinders or the pistons...
Shot some 20/50 in there, wrapped in up in bubble wrap
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003
nothing can to get in there now

Heres the transvestite, ive been trying to clean it up a bit.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003

so after that my engine was pretty much done until I drive my Miata all the way back up to the garage... so I decided to take a look at the other engine we just pulled
other than a shit ton of greasy anti rust shit all over the place, the transmission seemed fine

and after that, everything lines up!
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1392469003

next up, dropping everything under the NA, pulling the engine off my NB and making the swippidy swap swap

Love the shop (jealous of that) and you seem to be doing a good job of filling it up. What's the story there? Renting it?

I'm confident your how-to videos will be entertaining even if not all that informative.

ddturbosante 02-15-2014 09:56 AM

thanks a lot for the feedback!
the shop has been lent to us by the owner of the building. We explained our project, that it is about doing what you love to help others in need and he fell in love with our project.
We have the shop until the 1st of july and that is when our cars have to be diddly done.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393194067
I had just started, only removed the airbox
I had a really hard time removing the exhaust and heater hoses. But luckily for me, my mechanic friend gave me a little trick.
I used a little 90 deg angle o ring pick to go between the hose and the copper pipe to break em loose and I was able to get em out.
as for the exhaust manifold, i only had 12 point 14 mm sockets and I would be stripping the nuts. no bueno.

I worked about 6 hours doing various things that day, cleaning the shop was a bitch.

so first step was cleaning that dirty ass interior the owner left me.
I found socks, wet rags, solid kleenexes, an old scarf, fries, smarties you fucking name it. disgusting prick.

4 engines, 3 trannys, 2 miatas, 1 project

PORN

most recently now,
got lost on the way to buy this
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393193625

this weekend was a marathon, I slept at the garage, ate at the garage... shit I even slept in the miata.

so a marathon, yes. My goal was to strip out the interior as fast as possible to paint it and get it over with to I can move on to under the car

the shop was getting a bit messy and disorganized so I decided to buy a few box of ziploc bags and take some time to label everything out so I wont get lost anymore.

in the order of things ;

-organisation session (with cleaning of the shop and moving parts around so it takes less space.)
-engine assembly (which meant switching my cas from my old block to the 99 head, putting on the new waterpump, changing the front crank seal, brand new oil filter, removing ppower steering and clutch assembly and torquing all the head bolts)
-removing drive shaft, grinding, sanding, priming and undercoating
-sanding trunk, priming and undercoating
-removing all the interior metal panels (fuel tank and lines etc)
-Painting all panels flat black
-wrapping back of car with plastic sheets
-removing dash to remove carpet
-cleaning inside of car

NOW, i got stuck at 12:30 pm looking at two huge sheets of isolation or something that STUCK to the floor and I know it takes heat and something else to remove... I just forgot it.
so I left the shop after almost 48 hours of work with little sleep and made the hour long drive back home.

don't worry about the green paint, it'll be under the car :p
as far as the outside/inside goes, i'll be keeping a very subtle, matte black and gloss black mix with some bare metal/chromish color.

You'll see ! trust me !

okay guys ! no school from tuesday to friday, so I slept over at the garage.
Sound insulation had to come off, paint had to be done in my interior

MISSILE style.
(rattle cans)

I was expecting far worse when removing the insulation
took me 3 hours to get it all clean but it was worth it, found some light rust on the floor
I used my heat gun and a chisel, no hammer. then to clean it off i used my wire wheel and then some paint thinner.

Thanks a lot for the positive comments !
People are quick to judge but it's normal. They often forget they started somewhere too. :)
More to come this weekend! going back tomorrow

Be sure to drill your pan while its out of the car. Might even consider having the nipple welded to the pan...

Dry ice makes removing the factory sound deadening material easier - Although it looks like you managed to get it quite clean.

me too... me too...

whats up guys !

been a long weekend, my back hurts and inflatable mattress aint shit.

had some good surprises and some bad...

miata...

y u do dis

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384

miata stahp

get the mig out... which i dont have. oh well.
I'll take care of that some other time.
what's good about this is that it's only on one side but this side is pretty bad. frame's not too bad either.

so, I started the weekend by removing my power steering reservoir and pump from my engine bay. I decided I wanted to run depowered.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384

then friday night, after a nice dinner and a few beers at a local restaurant I decided to drop the subframe and get to work for the following day.

bam
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384

peep my caliper holding apparatus.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384

so that is done, broke both my end links ball joint. yay.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384
it's like that on both sides lol. I hate end links with ball joints.

Anyways, next up was the steering rack which I wanted to remove from the subframe so I could paint it, broke the 2 ball joints on both tie rods. Everything is just rusted up to shit on this car.

after that was removed I saw both balljoints on both sides for the lower and upper arms and i was just like fuck it. kept everything attached to the knuckle and put it on the side.
i'll deal with them later.
so, back to the thing
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384
rack's disconnected, frame is free and filthy... and RUSTY

I spent a good 2 hours trying to get most of the rust off of the subframe, cleaning it up and brushing it back to its original prettiness.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384
primer'd UP.
painted DOWN
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384
I know, it's fucking green. deal with it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384

now I have a question for you fellas, even though I know I will get laughed at and shunned by the turbomiata community.

here's a picture of my rack (lol)
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384

On most threads I read, people loop off the LITTLE lines instead of the 2 big return and pressure lines.

I've been told by a friend that I should loop the two big lines and leave the small ones as is.
Is he right?

for the bother, here's a picture of my love
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1393777384

have a good turbo week

thanks for the advice! I had thought about the dry ice but in canada getting it is much more complicated. I wouldve had to go to a specialty welding equipment store on the other side of the city and order it a day before... anyways big deal with some dry ice.
I figured my 7$ heat gun and a sharp chisel would do the trick. It did but it took me a long long time lol.

will do ! the engine is not going back in the car until everything for the turbo is fitted accordingly! I wont weld it though, it's kinda scary. i'll just drill it, tap it and fit a bung in there with some locktite or something.

Is he right?

I'd actually recommend pulling the rack apart and cutting the pressure seal off of the shaft and welding the "dead zone" spring on the input shaft.

The concept of looping the lines is fine but it will feel like a de-powered power steering rack because you're essentially pushing the fluid back and forth manually.

You'll want to do a couple of things while you have it apart:
  1. Remove the pressure seal ring - after doing this you'll clean the rack of any fluids and then use bearing grease during assembly. This way the bearing grease lubricates the moving bits and you aren't working to pump fluids back and forth.
  2. Weld the input shaft - the input shaft on a power steering rack has a heavy spring built into it. This spring basically dampens the movement of the input from steering wheel just enough for the power steering hydraulics to take over. It also allows some dead zone in your steering. If you de-power your rack and don't weld the input shaft you'll be disappointed with the amount of movement it takes to get your wheels to even begin to turn.
  3. Roll/crimp the fluid lines. If you have access to the welder you can apply a small bead across a crimped line but I've seen people roll and crimp them without problems.

The other important thing is to make sure the back lash on your input shaft is correct or you'll also end up with too much dead zone (probably unsafe) and potentially some noise.

Here is an illustration we tossed together for another customer. There are hundreds of write ups out there but this covers the basics:

Cut the line using a small pipe cutter for a clean cut or a die grinder then roll the remaining tubing and crimp it.

Gosh, I hate writing a good paragraph about the project and getting told I have to do it again because my ''token'' expired.

I hope you guys are having a good turbo week! spring is around the corner if not already there for most of you not sharing the same location as me.:crx:

It's been a pretty stressful two weeks guys... Gotta say, things have been better for DD turbo than it has recently. I just try to stay enthousiastic about it, because it's cars ffs, and I love working on 'em.

Like the wise Kendrick Lamar said : Bitch don't kill my vibe.

So I'll start at the beginning like most stories do :
my dad bought me a workbench ! Quite happy, it's very nice of him to have built me this. He never is interested in stuff I do but he got out of his way to make me this so, I appreciate it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
It's looking good I think. I'll have to get a metal sheet or something of the sort to bolt on top because I've worked on it this weekend and, it absorbs oily substances a lot and makes it hard to maintain.

Here it is in it's natural habitat (aka my work space at the garage and where I'll be spending most of my time now).
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
It already got put to the test with me working on the steering rack and doing the ''proper'' depowering of it.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
That was at the beginning. I had removed the piece of metal with the pinion on it (which I couldn't take out of - if anyone knows how, please share)
After, I noticed without a vice, removing both tie rod ends were going to be a realllllll b-word. My brother-in-law who was here to visit me this weekend instinctively bolted the rack to my subframe and used it as leverage. Two heads are better than one.
After that, I removed the shaft from the rack, ground off the metal seal on it and left it there. I'll take pictures later on this week to show you the progress, it's quite interesting.

Speaking of my brother-in-law ( mastertech at ford), I gotta take a moment to say I really appreciate the time he's given me throughout this journey that is the project. He's my mentor when it comes to mechanics and I've never seen anybody so passionate about their occupation before in my life.
A real inspiration this guy... and that is his build : (quick interlude)

Yep, that is an RX8 with a G8 engine in it. I know it's not turbo but I think you Miata guys are car guys before all, and you can appreciate it. The amount of fabrication work in this build is impressive. I'll try to grab more pictures when I can.

interlude over.

Pablo finished up his engine, he decided to keep his power steering and everything. timing job is done, everything is back together and looking GOOD

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
He finished painting all his suspension pieces. He doesn't want to change his bushings. He'll invest in something that looks like this :Attachment 239319

Lately, I've been wire brushing and cleaning the underside of my car to get it ready for the undercoating. I got 75% of it done this weekend
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
All that is missing is the tranny tunnel and frame rails area to be finished.

Damn ! I forgot.

I removed the rear crossmember and everything with it before that ! haha

so. much. rust.

Also, all of my 4 end links' ball joints are shot to shit. I emailed Emilio at 949 to find out when the supermiata's endlinks are gonna be in stock. He told me 1-2 weeks. I'll be ordering that soon with 2 new tie rod ball joints.

Then I began the rust removal (somewhat) process.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
Spent a few hours grinding without a mask on. A lot of dust particules in my lungs = me sneezing and blowing my nose until it's dry = scabs and pain in my nose and sinuses from the past 2 weeks.
Wear a mask, or just put a shirt on your face... just do something.

I removed as much as I can without going crazy about it and primed it :

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
then I hit it with a few coats of gloss black and called it a day.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954

I managed to get a few bushings out of my suspension arms using a 3 teeth puller. These were the easiest to pop out - I brought 'em to school and sandblasted them before :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
Paint was out, so might as well spray em.

Obligatory friend in engine bay first timer picture :
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954

I took the opportunity of have an experienced guy (brother in law) at the shop to go over a few things. Especially my engine which I wasn't too sure about.
He helped me remove my shafts (don't know the word in english) from the diff so I can carry it around and remove my bushings.
He also double checked my timing job, aside from a slightly loose belt, he said it was perfect ! So there you go, doubters. hahaha I'm kidding.
Also, we found out on my 99 block, there is a CKP and there isn't one on my 94-97.
The good thing is, on the block, there is a hole drilled but not tapped right where the bolt is supposed to be (and is on the NB block). Only thing to do is grind a little plateau off towards the timing gear so the ckp bracket will fit, tap the hole with the adequate size tap and install the NB pulley and the trick is done!
To do it I bought this on sale at my trustee favorite store canadian tire for 25$
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395106954
I hope it's got the right size haha
I forgot to take pictures of all this but I'll make sure I get some next time I go, no school this week wednesday, thursday and friday so I'll definately hit up the shop later.

Other than that, we checked out the coolant and oil ports available on the block for the turbo, there are a coolant and oil port on the exhaust side and one coolant on the back.
I'll use the one in the back as a main and the one on the side as a return coolant line. The one on the side's gonna be my main and I'll drill my pan for my oil return and I'll have good, cool and proper fluid circulating through my turbo :). It's crazy how they made these blocks as if they knew we would be putting turbos on them.

Have ANOTHER great and warmer turbo week fellas !
Ill be back with more pictures, apologies for the lack of them today

Second update this week! thank god its friday...
Plenty of pictures for you guys again!

Was a pretty hectic week with exams and everything so one night my friend invited me to a race he was taking part in at the local indoor go kart track.
Needless to say, I had to try it.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446299
my buddy for the next 20 minutes
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446299

Much harder than it seems! I had never raced a go kart before and it was a lot of fun! I have some footage on my gopro which I'll have to work on a bit and then maybe I'll be able to show you. If you want that is.

A couple days later I headed back to the garage and got to work!

Did some work on the good ol' rustbucket that is my winter beater/DD
Motor started knocking a bit and I didn't notice until after a week that I basically ran out of oil.
Wierdly enough... my oil pressure switch was slowly leaking and it resulted in me using this car and prematurely ruining it. We'll see how long it lasts me.
So, needless to say when I found out I almost had no oil left, I put 2 pints in and had to do an oil change, which I did.
Didn't wash the car all winter with the salt and everything. Rust was everywhere so I powerwashed it and it chipped off some paint. I took the opportunity to do an inspection and some cover up painting while it was in the shop. Inner tie rod is shot but the rest seems fine. Brakes will have to be done soon enough too.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446299
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446299

I picked up where I left off last time, doing the power steering depowering.
I decided not to weld the shaft and try it like it is before I do anything. Anyways, it's not that hard to get out of the car once it's actually on the car.

Part 4!

Then I got to the diff!
Wire brushed it a bit and started painting the housing
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446780
Got tired of trying the zip gun or the die grinder on those so I set the little f*ckers on fire.

worked better than I had originally anticipated I must say.
Smelled like shit, but worked well.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446780

After I had finished the undercoating under the car, I changed the thermostat on the BP, bought it at an autoparts store so it wasn't exactly the same but it'll work.
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446780
then came the grinding and tapping new holes to make my CKP fit on the old block!
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1395446780
This is the little portion of the block I had to grind off. Didnt take long. Then I tapped it with a 6x1 tap and it fit in no struggle!

And thats pretty much it for this week folks !
Next week I'll be going back with my other suspension pieces to get them ready. After that, we'll have to order some parts to start getting the car back together !

Have a good turbo weekend

To be truly honest, I went to the garage next door with a Mig and had them look at it. We compared the image you sent me and the shaft and it wasn't really the same so we didn't know where to do the welding.
After a few minutes I was feeling a bit bad for wasting their time so I left and put the whole assembly back together :p
I'm scared to weld it myself at school too because I'm scared of warping it...

Anyways, it's back in the steering rack for now. If you say it makes THAT big of a difference, I'll take your word for it and I'll disassemble the whole thing again. I just need tips as of how NOT to warp it and if there are some precautions to take when doing this. Also, I dont want to remove the bearing thing around the shaft it looks like a pain. Doable??

Btw thanks for your help in doing this, I'll make sure to think of Fab9 when I do my shopping

FAB 03-21-2014 08:33 PM

Not a problem. Warping it is not likely given the thickness of the material. If you were to take one end of the shaft in a vice and grab the other end with pliers you'll see where the flex is. You really can't mess it up. Pop off that nylon ring and get a good hot bead on there. It's thick metal so make sure you have enough amperage to get solid penetration. Do a tack in 3-4 places around the shaft.

Did a quick google search and came up with this example:

Can I just leave it spot welded like that? or does it have to be all the way around?

Spot weld away. Doesn't need a stack of dimes around it. Just make sure you get good penetration. You'll see discoloration of the metal when you get good penetration. The example above has been hit with a wire brush.

I'll make sure to do that next time I go to the garage and take pictures for you!
Luckily the garage next door to ours has a MIG and the people that work there are really cool with me. Won't be a problem !

Thanks a lot for helping out a miata noob, I'll make sure to return the favor to someone in need when I can.
