Bulbasaur, evolve to Ivysaur! (budget turbo build content inside)

A little background on myself. I'm a ME student about to graduate and a turbo noob, but I'm here to learn. I've sourced together a turbo kit last summer and bailed last minute because I was a bitch. But that won't happen again. I'm open to any feedback, good or bad, so feel free to critic my build to keep me in the right direction.

Meet my 1991 BRG miata (aka Bulbasaur). I've done a lot of supporting mods over the past year or so and he is now ready to be turbo'd (evolve to Ivysaur). And in case anyone was wondering, Venusaur evolution occurs when I have enough spare money and fabrication skill to motor swap it (all motor k24 maybe?). And if you guys aren't Pokémon fans... deal with it. :dealwithit:

This is my weekend car which I hope to take to the track occasionally so I'm shooting for a pretty reliable 180 rwhp and then go from there. Hopefully the boost isn't as addicting as everyone says it is so I'm not tempted to blow the motor.

Anyway, words < lists < pics.... So i'll save the best for last

I came home to find this at my door

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219

So i opened it to inspect the parts

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219

I also replaced these:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219

with these:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219

Then took it on a little test drive up Glendora Mountian Rd. The weather was nice so I snapped a few pics (please excuse me extremely amateur photography skills).

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219

Then I came home and read up on some turbo info. The second read through definitely helped on some more complicated aspects:

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1375194219

The intercooler and piping should be on its way then I just need a few nick nack parts like oil return fitting to compete the kit. My DIYPNP will hopefully arrive some time next week so I can get familiar with the software on a stock car first

Questions:

Does anyone in So Cal know a good local shop to clean and flow test injectors for a reasonable price?

Also, the downpipe has a good amount of surface rust on it. Would it be best to sand it off and self etch primmer then high temp paint it to prevent it from getting more rusty?

Looks like you've done a decent amount of research before starting on the turbo, props for that.

330k miles on the chassis, that's pretty impressive. I assume you got the car for especially cheap?

My kid brother would probably appreciate the Pokemon references....he's also a jobless 25 year old man...

ya, it had been sitting for 5 years prior, I think I may have overpaid but it was a straight frame and I fell in love with the BRG. After the poly bushing, motor mounts, etc, and frame rails/roll bar it feels like a new car. I'm considering adding door bars to too stiffen it up a little more.

I'm 21 and employed and will never be too old for pokemon references.

I finally made it out to my first track day and got the chance to push this car to it's limit (well, not really since I'm a very novice driver still) and see how all the hours a put into my car payed off. The track was streets of willow CW and it was blazing hot. I opted to pay for a ride along instructor for the day which was very helpful getting me comfortable out there quickly.

I shaved a second or 2 off each run and got my lap time down to 1:40.9. My rs3s seemed to start giving out after 5 laps tho, but the rest of the car performed great and handled all the abuse. I can't wait to get out there again, while still natural aspirated, and break into 1:3X. Needless to say, It was a blast (besides my speeding ticket I got on the way up going 80 mph in a 70, aka flow of traffic, which is 2 hours from my house if I want to contest it... fml).

Enough rambling, here are some pics:

It's tempting to do that and do a more reliable NA build. But I think I'd rather play with boost now and look into a swapped track only car in the future.

It's been way to hot last few weeks to get much done but I believe I'm just about turbo ready. Over the past month I have installed

-DIYPNP (thanks Brain!)
-IAT sensor
-BMW VTPS
-AEM EUGO
-autometer boost gauge
-toyota COPS (thanks FRT_Fun) <-- easiest install of my life
-RC 440cc injectors

I decided to go reuse the beginning pieces of my old style FM kit for the intercooler piping. The plan is to go 2 in from turbo outlet then bend down and increase it to 2.25, to the intercooler and cut down the 2.5 to 2 in throttle body piece to match the 2.25 piping.

VEAL is an awesome piece of software by the way. It makes tuning air fuel ratios a piece of cake. After only 10 min of tuning the car feels pretty solid with the COP and RC 440s. I just need to fine tune it and then the real fun of the build can start.

Next on the list is mounting the intercooler and routing the piping. 2 weeks to school starts. It's crunch time!

Made some good progress on the build this weekend. Got a lot done on saturday. Then ran my first marathon on sunday and spent the rest of the long weekend recovering. However, it worked out well since I needed to order some parts I was missing. Hopefully the nick nack pieces will arrive by this weekend to complete the build.

Intercooler mounting wasn't too bad. Just took $12 worth of aluminum, a drill and cut off wheel. The goal was to get it mounted closer to the radiator with the same gap as the AC condenser I removed. I think it turned out well.

So I have the same intercooler as you, and was going to mount it similarly. I was worried about pulling it up as high as you did though in case those tabs that the AC condenser bolted to start rubbing the end tanks. I was going to put some of that rubber covered U channel dealio that you use as trim for sharp metal on it. Just throwing that out there.

Do those 180 bends that came with it clear your tires at full lock?

I was going to put some 3m double stick tape on the intercooler where it would contact the condenser bracket. and Just leave the protective tape on the other end. That stuff sticks like hell and is pretty thick and durable so I figured it make a good protection layer.

I think as is it will clear. But that was just test fitment. I am going to cut them down as much as possible to keep it as inward as possible.

WTF!! why you no oil feed port!!! Bought the adapter and everything from BEGI to find out my block doesn't have the port threaded and plugged. I think this engine might be a Japan import which my explain it. Anyway that caused a big headache of running around sourcing parts over the weekend to tee off the oil sender.

It handles better now than it did before. Might be more the spring rates tho.

Braineack 09-09-2013 03:35 PM

how's your spine?

and why do you have isc racing tophats on koni shocks? are you trying to coil bind? or are you CRnet low?

Spine is okay. They're 400/300. I don't daily drive it so I can live with it. Bumpy roads suck tho.

They came with the suspension. 4.75 and 4.5 pinch weld (IRC). I haven't had any coil binding issues yet. If something does come up I'll make some adjustments.

It's been a while since an update. The miata didn't get worked on much during my senior year of school due to my work, schooling but mostly FSAE :crx: Even after graduating most of my time was spent in the school shop till we completed our three comps. Here's some off topic pics from tire temp testing and the Germany competition.

I'm still considering if I want to build an IR tire temp Array system for the miata. I have the DAQ and programing all done. I just need to figure out a bracket system and wiring which is easier said than done.

We should have made it one PCB board to start off with

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103077

3D printed the brackets at home

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103077

Our driver drifted into a cone braking a bracket. I should have reinforced it with bracing. We got some good test data before hand at least.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103077\

Germany was an amazing experience. It was my first time out of the country and I couldn't have asked for a better trip. Competing in the Hockenheimring and sharing pits where F1 cars was neat. The team placed 9th overall and 1st in cost. We were surprisingly competitive with the cost of our car we beat many teams with budget 8x our own.

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e1...8/IMG_3718.jpg

We had the most bare and empty pit of all teams there.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103077

This is how you get a car from California to Germany. #Tetris

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103077

This is just one of the amazing cars at comp. The level of worksmanship it amazing that a group of college kids could build such a machine.

Okay, on to the relevant stuff. I have decided to switch this car to a weekend car with the occasional tack event, to a more dedicated track car that can still be driven on the street. I started with the easy stuff. Some weight savings. Gutted the AC, heat core, blower, cut the dash, pulled carpets and painted the interior.

Currently the car has the turbo kit removed to pass smog so I decided to reclock the turbo outlet down for more efficient piping routing. While I was at it I ported the wastegate and cleaned up a rough section of the manifold.

Before (sharp corner)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103618

After (probably didn't help much but couldn't have hurt)

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103618

Fabed this up real quick. Hopefully aluminum doen't fatigue to quickly

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103618

Checked my injectors at my work place. looks like they check out okay.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1411103618

Slowly tackling a list of projects I have planned for this car. I hope to get it running again really soon.

18psi 09-19-2014 09:46 AM

Curious about how that bracket holds up.
I'm sure there's a reason no one makes them in aluminum for any turbo.
I'm considering making one just like that out of steel

good to see you progressing btw - and those FSAE cars look crazy fun

I have seen aluminum brackets used before and this is a decent gauge material so I'm crossing my fingers and will be keeping a close eye on this. It was made from a piece of scrap lying around so it was free. If I find an equivalent steel scrap maybe I will duplicate it and replace it. My last one was a welded steel one and that cracked right at the weld

No idea to be honest. I purchased it used and it came that way. I wish it was just the bar. Less hardware and less weight.

Getting the car set up to be a track rat whore for 2015. New used xidas 750/400 w/ helpers. Corner weighed and aligned. Fixed my clutch leak issue that was the cause of my tow of shame from my last track day. New Exedy master, slave and SS line should do the trick.

No video from the track day, but this DIY sequential shift light worked better than expected. It was clearly visible with peripheral vision. I never had to look directly at my Tach the entire day. Last time at the track I bounced off the rev limiter here and there. With this I don't think I hit it at all.

I finally got around to installing my DIYPNP back on my stock motor. I'm hopefully going to get a chance to run it on the dyno at work and learn me a little tuning. In prep for that. Heres some random pics from the last week.

Looking good man, glad you are getting in the game! I really really want a 3d printer after seeing your(awesome) throttle body elbow. I could make so many parts with it.

Your fab skills are crazy good, wiring too.

Thanks Jeff!

I ended up using my BEGI elbow from my turbo kit and mounted my filter closer near the bumper opening rather than the driver side headlight so this most likely will never get used. I used my work's printer for that one. My 3D printer kind of sucks at support features for complicated overhangs.

Been busy these past few weeks getting some work done to the miata.

Installed FM oil cooler kit. Sourced a 1.8 oil warmer for the spacer.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424587617

Ghetto fabricated some brackets. I need to figure out some ducting.

$25 100 psi transducer to data log oil pressure. I wonder how accurate it is and how it holds up.

Thermocouple added to an oil plug adapter for some oil temp logging and warning system.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424587617

My trunk decided to lock me out... fucking annoying. It took 12 extensions to reach to two 10mm bolts though the rear parcel shelf area.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424587617
https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424587617

Tire temp brackets were a headache. This will do for now. I need to shift the sensors over an inch to the left still. Hopefully i don't hit any curbs.

https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1424587617

And finally... got some shinny expensive parts! officially no longer a budget build. I'm taking a head porting/building class and will be building a 1.8 motor to upgrade my 1.6. I found a 99-00 head to use for the build. So far I have purchased the following:

+1mm intake valves
+2mm inconel exhaust valves
supertech heavy double valve springs.
skunk2 throttle body

Is there anything else I should be replacing while I'm at it?

Just placed an order for seals and timing belt kit to freshen this engine up. The leakdown test results were mediocre but I'm hoping it's from sitting for so long and they will be better once warmed up. This engine just needs to last me till the end of this year so I can finished the forged internal engine build.

I haven't gotten a chance to try them out yet. But they function as they should. it's loud as hell if I clip it to a table and tap on it lightly

Spent the last few weeks preparing the 1.8L to drop in my car. The engine was covered in gunk and I couldn't tell exactly what was leaking so I decided to just replace all the seals while I had it out. This was my first time using the mazdamotorsports discount which was very helpful. I threw in a gates water pump (3D cast impeller) and timing belt kit too while I was at it.

of course, the only seal I didn't order ended up needing to be replaced (Transmission output shaft)

I picked up a Rev basic MS3 to run this 1.8 so it will still need some wiring, a throttle bracket and other small things done before I can get it started and back on the track.

kenzo42 04-11-2015 11:52 PM

What brand of wrinkle paint did you use? Any tips on procedure? Looks really good.

I like the title of your thread.

cyotani 04-12-2015 04:13 PM

thanks. There's a couple spots that did not wrinkle as much and were a little shinier but overall I'm happy with it. It's VHT wrinkle plus paint. Just make sure you clean the part well with proper prep work. Spray it in heavy layers (thickest you can without running). A heat gun will help wrinkle it more or throwing it in the oven.

cyotani 07-17-2015 12:41 AM

<p>So the new 1.8 has been in and running for a little while now. It seemed to be blowing some smoke early on but that seemed to be mostly gone now. Compression tested a perfect 180 PSI across the board so I have high hopes for this engine.&nbsp;</p><p>I upgraded the old DIYPNP to an older REV MS3 basic unit to get the datlogging and Knock sensor input functionality. The basemap seemed to be a pretty good starting point. I did one session of dyno tuning but was only able to mess with the fueling. It was my first time operating a dyno and I was just trying to get familiar with the contols and multitasking all the little things you need to watch over while tunning. I'll post up a dyno once I get the spark tables tuned.&nbsp;</p><p>Other than that I made this ghetto rigged cold air box out of some scrap sheet metal and a random scrap boost tube that was laying around the shop over a couple lunch breaks. Filter was a freebie sample and I 3D printed a 4&quot; to 3&quot; reducer piece with an bung for the IAT.&nbsp;&nbsp;I plan to just remove the driver side turn signal indicator while at the track as the air inlet source.&nbsp;</p><p><img src="http://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.miataturbo.net-vbulletin/800x600/80-img_7772_f6c6e33c24312e8dd2aa38234be594443db51ac2. jpg" title="" /><br /><br /><img src="https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.miataturbo.net-vbulletin/800x600/80-img_7775_e6208ee46e38267306206bc8bf4ff2a978b34cac. jpg" title="" /><br /><br />&nbsp;</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>I also finally got the racecapture talking to the MS3. I can't praise this data logger enough. Custom code scripting is an amazing feature. The new Dashboard Broadcaster feature on the latest MS3 firmware makes setting this up a breeze. I now have the following ECU inputs logged and synced with my other data. Also I can set custom warning to display on the tablet for any parameter.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>VIDEO:</strong><u><strong>&nbsp;https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7a2YXBh8mG0&amp;feature=youtu.be</strong></u></p><p>How the hell do we embed this now?</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p><strong>Channels Logged from the ECU:</strong><br />MAP<br />RPM<br />Coolant temp<br />TPS<br />IAT<br />Spark Advance<br />AFR Tagret<br />AFR<br />EGO correction<br />Knock Retard</p><p><strong>Channels logged via analog input:</strong><br />Brake Pressure<br />Oil Pressure<br />Coolant Pressure&nbsp;<br />Oil Temp</p><p><strong>Channels planned on adding:</strong></p><p>Steering angle</p><p>12 IR tire temp array via CAN bus</p><p><br /><img src="http://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.miataturbo.net-vbulletin/800x600/80-img_7720_2909ee45be48215914c69f1dd9dbcda9395eb3be. jpg" title="" /><br /><br /><br />&nbsp;</p>
