Check List - Turbo Locost build
Hello,
Long time reader and first time poster. I have saved the heart of a very rusted out 1990 Miata power train and am using it in my Locost build. I am planning to run a T25 talon turbo on this setup and just looking for you smart miata people to check my list to see if I have everything I will need. T25 turbo Weir Log Manifold custom DP 1.8L injectors external walbro 190 fuel pump MR2 SC intercooler MSD boost control unit to retard timing RRFPR BOV off a G1 Talon water lines/ oil lines He is a few picture's of the build http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/2717/pic0058yp1.jpg http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/917/pic0071al1.jpg http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3349/pic0086xl7.jpg http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/723...stfloor004.jpg http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/4430/tierods001.jpg http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/7524/manifold003.jpg http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/9123/frame019.jpg http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/4918/wiring001.jpg http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/549/wiring003.jpg http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/5390/wiring004.jpg Welded up the manifold but no outlet on it yet. I will be ceramic coating it once it's all done being welded. http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/3861/img090.jpg Mike |
do you have charge piping setup?
also, do you have all of that stuff? i have 1.8 injectors and the fpr if you need them I trust you know im local. ;) |
yes I have all the stuff. I bought 1.8L injectors yesterday for $25
|
Looks good, some minor concerns about the chassis. If it were me I would triangulate the engine mount, but that's just me.
|
The engine mounts have been changed since that first picture. Much stronger now

Looks cool. I was going to build one before I found my Miata.
Word of advice. Get a facemask. Driving a locost will fill your mouth and nose with grit; seems every little piece of road crud gets sucked into the cockpit. |
The car will only be used for autocrossing and lapping days.. Full face helmet wil be worn
|
Build and list look good. I'm not really seeing anything missing. I assume you didn't mention charge piping as it is a simple fab part.
|
Is there a reason with all the diy stuff you're not using a megasquirt?
|
yes I have the piping to make the chage pipes.
right now MS is not in the budget..... but down the road it will be added. We had the RRFPR and the MSD from an old miata SC kit we had. |
Your list looks good for a low-medium boost setup. The hardware could let you run as much as 12psi with the biggest limitation being the turbo and injectors. That turbo really falls flat on it's face at 14psi with limited gains starting at 12psi. Is your Walbro 190 really external? Around here, we typically use Walbro internal pumps that are rated 190lphHP(Hi Pressure) and the regular 190lph low pressure. I'd recommend you be sure you're using the HP if you plan to run more than about 6-7psi. With the 1.8 injectors, you're looking at about 100psi of fuel pressure to run 10-12psi... the HP can provide in excess of 130psi at the rail.
What brand/model RRFRP do you have? Is it the standard fixed-rate Vortech unit? |
yes I am running an external 190lphHP walbro pump because I am running a foam filled fuel cell. I do not have the RRFRP in front of me but if i remember correct it's BELL unit.
|
I'm glad it's the Bell unit... be sure and take it apart and check the seals... they can get old over time. You'll also want a fuel pressure gauge as part of your setup so you can really fine-tune things. Need I say wideband as well?
Keep this thread up to speed and let us know progress. Any idead on a final "look" for this thing? Paint, aero, wheels? |
That's a lot of rust.

I still want to see a locost on 15x9 6ULs.
|
We plan to run a set of 13x8 rims on it
