https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3d77dd4cf.jpeg Got some tabs for the exit duct. A spring on both sides hold it down the the radiator. Easy removal if needed! https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0634e7a36.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1fb6209ea.jpeg Front fender liners modified and installed. Have another door to hang and start the alignment tonight. I got tge car running with the gearbox and it’s pretty damn cool! |
|
When are you going to shake it out? Did you happen to test today? |
Did a couple outs and ins. Car feels solid. Ended up getting a puncture in the LF on the out lap that I was going to try and do 5 laps. Have a a few issues to resolve with some sensor calibrations. Probably going to try and get up to Thunderhill this week and run the 2 mile. |
Epic build! I have been following you on IG. I can't wait to see it around the local tracks.
|
Nice build. Subscribed. Looking forward to track videos.
|
Tested at Thunderhill today and well it had highs and lows. Back to the drawing board on a few items.
This was the first flying lap after added 4 clicks of low speed and high speed compression. Started the day full open on all the dampers (HSC, LSC, REB) I went home after this with a broken turbo manifold and some diff mount issues. 1:19.6 I believe there is a really low 18 to a high 17 in this car... |
Did you see the shorty PPF diff mount that the "TX Track NC" guy just made? Look him up on Facebook. Looks like a much stronger design to me.
|
Yea Jenson and I talk a lot about our cars. He broke his within the first session. I like his design tho. I’m going to beef mine up today. So far after the shake down I have fixed the exhaust. Still just a patch but also added a turbo stay bracket. Not many people would think it’s cool but I do. The clevis bracket is from a alternator tensioner from a Mclaren gearbox. Love the trash can some times. :) https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7cdf570af.jpeg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e1e5f58ee.jpeg |

What was that breakup on the 2-3 shift in the opening secs of the video??
On a side note here at the Runoffs taking a stab at the T1 title. Yesterday’s qual was not what I would consider great by any means, but if you consider my very last minute attempt to get this car ready it’s good. Ended up p2 in class then pulled the head off to change a head gasket. Still not enough tuning on the suspension so the car is “fast” but not great and fast. May skip q2 and get the engine ready and do some setup work and go full send. Pics for clicks. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...8d756c5cf.jpeg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...70f6d5037.jpeg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...753abbb54.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...8ccbbebab.jpeg |
This is lovely! Please do not beat up on them too much. I would still like to get into the red headed step child NC before anyone else tries to scoop and build them :)
Any massaging of the head?? |
Be sure to tell your fellow competitors how the "SCCA Runoffs" are just a shakedown event for your new setup. I am sure there's a few broken hearts seeing a Miata P2.
Best of luck out there Charlie! I'll be there at the race rooting for ya!. |

Best of luck out there Charlie! I'll be there at the race rooting for ya!. I don't have the pace needed for qual. Got bumped down to 5th today by not running. Today was extremely optimal conditions in the mid to low 70*s with no wind. I think my car has a mid 42 in its current trim with some setup work. I think I am giving up a lot with the aero department. Hoping the race is more in my zone and we will see what happens. The big cars are going to be hard on the tires. Andrew in the vette has no help besides his steam roller size hoosiers. |
I am following the runoffs and noticed an NC in T1 and just had to find the build thread. Ive seen other NA/NBs run in T1 but never an NC, so needless to say this thread did not disappoint!
What is the race weight on the car? Listed at 2400lbs +4% for sequential +100lbs for aftermarket ABS +3% for head porting? (or do you only have a 1" port match?) So 2675lbs? so you probably have 200+lbs of balast? Such an awesome build! Sonoma is the "right" track for the lighter weight cars in T1, i hope you can get back out there today and put in a good flier and then keep it together for 20 laps during the race! |
I hate that we couldn’t be out there with our T1 Miata. Just couldn’t make the long haul out there. |
Sorry bud :(

Not a great week for me. Car is still in one piece and the engine doesn't have a hole in it. We will make it good.
Kind of bummed I did not get to try the hail mary setup today. Went up on camber by a lot all around, 30% stiffer front springs, 35% stiffer rear springs, raised the wing 6in, ARB changes, and damper changes. Anyway here is the fast lap from the week. Still a lot left with me and the car. Here are some photos from Chris Robbins on the grid. We were starting P4 with all the big dogs... https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...00bc9c1493.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...74ff282cb0.jpg |
Saw the smoke at the start of the race, and saw you had to retire early.
Still you did an awesome job of getting the car built and towards the pointy end of some of the best cars in class. If anything, this should validate your build and shows that it is worthy of further development! |

If you add 7% to the base weight then the 100 lbs you get 2668lbs. The car has close to 275lbs in it by now. Made for a 50.5% front weight at the end of the day. I have sent a letter on clarifying that part. |
Well finally a day to get some work done on the car after the Runoffs. I pulled the car out of the trailer this last Sunday with a small window in my day. I had a quick list of things to go thru that have been bugging me since that long and annoying race week.
The brake system at Sonoma wasn't very ideal. We initially thought it was the balance bar being bound up in the Tilton pedal assembly. The problem was in any braking event it would always start the braking phase at 40-45% front brake bias, then eventually get to the mid 50% range, or what ever I was targeting. In a straight line braking zone this isn't to much of a deal. Its the slightly lateral loaded braking zones that end up being crazy with more rear bias on the initial pedal hit. So Ian from Pagid was hanging out there and we took the pedal assembly apart and hot rod lubed the thing up with some dry graphite lube. No biding any more and perfect brake bias operations. Now fixing this problem and getting more confidence with the car brings another problem along. New problem is that mainly in turn 10 braking there is a long pedal. It did not happen every time and I do perform confidence taps here and there to make sure there is no knock back. Potentially this was caused by StopTech sending the brake rotors I ordered with the street bobbin washers. There is no float in the rotors and with the loads we can see with this car it does not take much to get some knock back. I have ordered the regular flat washers to get rid of the belleville washers installed. Next is the engine. We had a rough time with the engine that week. The head gasket didn't want to stay sealed up. (potentially the 30psi at the low end and 26psi at the high end) I am running the standard ARP 8740 studs which will be replaced with the CA 625+ studs when ever they show up. They are rated for an extra 60,000psi tensile strength. Everything else looks good. I rolled the valve cover gasket near the DI pump on the 8th time removing the valve cover. So that's where the "smoke" came from and yes it did leak a good amount of oil...Oh well. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6056c0158e.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5324c30c76.jpg Plans to come after the 25 Hour: RHR Dual Element wing. Has a small main foil for T1 spec. It should help balance the small splitter better than what I had. Big splitter to compliment the dual element wing. Fixing the front rotors Find a 3.9 R&P Change the head studs Map the engine without the 37mm restrictor. (hope for 450+whp on the 6258) Design the front upper/lower control arm spherical bearing cups Go get some fast laps at Sonoma, Thunderhill, and maybe even Buttonwillow to stir the pot. This was a cool shot because its all I got. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...8fd7ce3a30.jpg |
The NC peaking out there with it's smiley face.

Caught a little break to get back on this project as it was left in a crappy state. I have received some cool gifts recently and figured I would start getting them worked into the schedule. I got a early IMSA GTD spec Audi R8 LMS Ultra Diffuser from the mezzanine storage at work. It fits with very little modification and should be able to mount quite easily. Makes the rear look a lot more proper and aggressive. It is pretty long is just about to the front of the rear subframe when held up there.. Going to compliment it with a flat bottom to connect the dots from the front to the rear... If it does nothing for performance it looks cool and is worth more than most peoples cars when it was new... :)
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e9a104883f.jpg Next up we have some new valve springs... I kind of shot at the hip with the rate by getting the stiffest off the shelf option from Supertech. We rated them and ran them thru the valve spring software with my cam plots, software says we are safe up to 36psi and about 9500rpm. Will not see the RPM with this engine but the boost pressure is there on the low end already...So I am a happy camper. Engine block is chased for the head studs, gasket is coated, and everything else is ready to go back together this week. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...78425d2f7b.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1474efd423.jpg My favorite thing I have done recently is used my friend and our lead engineer at Flying Lizard Motorsport to help me with some suspension design. Today I had him plot all the points so we can construct a model of the suspension to get a better idea on what we need to make the car work better. He has been engineering cars since they had wooden wheels so I appreciate being able to get his brain involved with my project. Hope to have some ideas on what to do in the future. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...eb975dae7f.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e6a5430d0e.jpg |
That project is getting better with every update, great work. Very nice to see some real motorsport engineering going into a somewhat everyday road car.
|
Looking forward to seeing the suspension nuggets that you'll come across
|
That is pretty fucking cool. Definitely relevant to my interests since the RX-8 suspension is nearly identical.
|
not sure how I haven't seen this thread until now. will be neat to see where suspension development goes

Todays project:
No breaking diff mounts any more. Thanks to Jensen for getting me the pieces. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...03e2dfb372.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7874525d5a.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ecaacc34b4.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...27ada55876.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f3d60d643f.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3f15074834.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3e126c42d2.jpg |

Are you aware of any broken diff mounts on the n/a 2.5L World Challenge cars, or is that a problem that only exists on big power boosted builds like yours and Jensen's?
