Y's sloppy rods only special. Now with more Boost!

So I begin here. A 1990 NA6 I picked up for way more than I should have paid, but after selling my previous miata (a steaming pile of garbage I got for $1100) I flipped into this. Car had No interior, It was LOUD, HOT, and SLOW. However it was a Georgia car its entire life, ZERO rust, and cam with a factory hardtop.
I was happy to get back into the platform to say the least.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3c2013290d.jpg

Had a silly person at my old job back into the dr rear quarter, put a decent sized dent that had to be pulled out and have body work done. I also got to pick a new color!!!!! I decided on the 95 M edition merlot. I have never looked back at red. Merlot is the best. I will die on this hill. :fawk:
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...69fcf4641b.jpg

So I drove around with Coilovers and sticky tires for awhile. Really enjoyed the car, but really did not enjoy the lack of power, Most of my friends had big power evo's and subaru's. I did not enjoy being left behind on the straights!

So on Cinco de Mayo. I ingested a hefty amount of tequila and got to work on a turbo kit!
-Cx racing version 2 kit minus their manifold (they were out of stock)
-Tacotaco cast 1.6 manifold.
-Toyota COP's
-Rx8 yellow injectors
It was a sloppy turbo kit for sure. It did the job though, and held up to my years of ABUSE, and I mean ABUSE. I was never easy on this car, Always drove it to 110% and didnt have any major issues. (Foreshadowing)

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1c9adeed8a.jpg

So the setup stayed the same for a couple years.. Other than some HUGEEE 272 cams, and some 1000cc injectors. The cams completely ruined the narrow powerband that I had. Sounded sooooo guuuuuuud though. The ricer inside of me loved it. The racer in me hated how much bottom end I lost.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a9829b16b9.jpg

So the new 1.6 that was going to go in was a simple setup.
-Regasket the engine
-ARP head studs
-Stock head gasket
-Flyin Miata manifold and GTX2871R (ebay choochoo special)
Looking back on all of this now. I should have just waited another couple months and done the 1.8 that I had originally wanted :noob:
Alas. I went to work.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...2725615bce.jpg

Now just go ahead and get in there already!!!!!

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a9b2a6cd62.jpg

I really started to get annoyed with how leaky/unresponsive the old setup/engine was, So once I had some time off from work I set out removing the old 1.6.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...53f92c5aa8.jpg

Got it out!!! Was so greasy and oily. Super excited to get to cleaning! (said no one ever)

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...274a2c330d.jpg
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a870f06915.jpg
After lots and lots of degreaser we ended up with a pretty clean engine bay! I cannot wait to get rid of all that RED!

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c7488d960a.jpg
Had a bunch of rust under the brake master from years of it slowly seeping brake fluid on everything. Wire wheel and some rust remover did wonders!
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f2943915cf.jpg
After all the cleaning and painting.....The eagle has landed! I learned after trying to shoehorn the engine in that you need to trim slightly for the FM turbo manifold with a big (GTX2871R) turbo. So I scuffed up my pretty paint work. Oh well.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...43b9bf3dc3.jpg
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5165cbbed9.jpg
I bolted a bunch more things on, and we end up with a running miata!

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d04867a01c.jpg
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...bb254e885e.jpg
So I had dialed the mechanical side. Was working through street tuning the car. 16 psi was great and pulling strong.. However, I did get greedy and turn up the boost on a drive to work, and welp. #4 was not happy.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e208f04bd5.jpg
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...35e30d7d20.jpg
I wasn't as upset as I thought I would be. I knew my greed for more power bit me in the butt, and I knew it was a stock bottom ended 1.6 with miles on it.

I will be updating this thread as I build a 94 block and combine it with a VVT head for moar powahhhhhh.

Now we're talking! Cool build so far, this is the natural progression of a 1.6 turbo miata owner.

1.8 build pictures coming!

crash12190 09-17-2020 06:14 AM

So the1.6 was fun. I definetly was fighting the pressure from my 1.8 friends during that build, I should have listened but I know that I am stubborn!
New build is:
94 block (I want to retain my water/oil feed ports on the exhaust side of the block)
VVT head rebuilt
Stock 94 pistons(the magical highly debated lower compression ratio)
OEM rings 1st ring gap .017" 2nd ring 0.019"
eBay rods (some love some hate, we'll see if they last)
King main and rod bearings
-Kraken hotside (assuming Fab9 will ever ship it to me :noes:)
eBay GTX2871R Gen 2 (oooooooohhh shiney)
and I'll be reusing my 6speed from the 1.6 setup.

So I set to work.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0661881532.jpg
Yuck! Needs power coat!
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...905f628ba0.jpg
Also yuck!
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...58aaf98596.jpg
Muuuuuuch better!
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a91976c553.jpg
Excuse my cluttered work area!
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...49693f6bd1.jpg
Yes this is a block. Don't worry I cleaned it more!
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6c032d1a1b.jpg
Crank is in!

A few words of encouragement never hurt anyone.

Kaze spec engineering oil pan baffle!
Really wanted to install one of these, I was noticing drops in oil pressure during hard braking, My buddies car fell victim to oil starvation on a mountain run with me. I do not want to have a similar fate!

https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...fd155af94d.jpg
Pan on and sealed up!
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7df4951164.jpg
Refurbished VVT head installed! Torqued down the ARP head studs as well!
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...3d12571b98.jpg
Lookin good! Installed the glowshift sandwich adapter for my auber oil pressure sensor, and my oil temp gauge. I will decide from there if there is a need for an external oil cooler. Car will be a street car and probably not see heavy track use.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...260f737e18.jpg
I wanted to run an adjustable fuel pressure regulator, so I used this turbosmart fuel rail adapter (TS-0402-1001) and the Vibrant 1/8npt to -6AN (VPE-10257 from Summit)
I think it is a trick little setup if i say so myself.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...81ee671eb1.jpg
Juuuuust clears everything, so it works for me!
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e23567119d.jpg
AUS 1000cc fuel injectors. Personally I wouldn't recommend them to anyone, they have a lifetime warranty so I just keep getting them refreshed if I have any issues with them. (done this twice already in my 2 years with them. Issues with the internal o-rings coming apart.) If they give me issues again I will probably throw them out.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...659a95f45a.jpg
So I got super lucky and someone put me on to a Mazdapseed type 1 front bumper on yahoo japan auctions. After a long wait it finally has arrived! Has a small crack and needs love overall, but it is in one piece and already being worked on at the body shop.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...19038f7527.jpg
I personally LOVE this front end. The way the intercooler frames up, the cheeky smile it adds to the miata, OEM+ looking and certainly a different thing to see in the miata world where advanti s1's and 6ul's are the norm. ( It's okay i can say it. Im one of them!) It will look great with a FD front lip, and paint!

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0131adefe0.jpg
Here is a pic of the Shanghi spinnay thang. GTX2871R gen2 .64 ar We'll see how it does, second guessing myself and thinking I should have gone 2860? Thoughts anyone?

Fireindc 09-17-2020 11:53 AM

Loving all the updates man! Looks like a great recipe for a basic motor build, very similar to mine. May it hold up very well for you.

Also, looks like the car was ripping pretty good on the 1.6 setup, so this 1.8 VVT setup with a 2871 is going to be bonkers. I think since the 2871 is a gen2 and it's going on a VVT motor you should be fine. My oldskool gt2860rs is at 14psi by 3500 or so, and I'm at 7k ft altitude. It has a fantastic linear power band that makes it easy to lay down power.

crash12190 09-17-2020 12:01 PM

Awesome to hear! One of my tuning customers has a 1.8 with a BP05 head with a GTX2876 Gen2 and its bonkers how fast it spooled, I figured going a little smaller will get me the response that I want.

crash12190 09-17-2020 12:09 PM

Kind of a slow day at work. So I've been messing around on here.
The auber oil pressure sensor showed up last night and I installed it this morning.
Ended up replacing the glowshift oil temp sensor with a saturn one I just ordered.
Just so I don't end up having to add another gauge to the interior and can just use the Pi that I have setup.

Dr.Sep 09-17-2020 12:20 PM

How long ago did you order the Kraken... I am not too far from that point in my build and was 100% planning on going Kraken from Fab9, just curious how much time in advance I should plan :squint:

crash12190 09-17-2020 12:25 PM

I ordered my manifold Aug. 25 I was told they are reaching out to kraken to confirm the ship date, but that was 2 weeks ago. Received another email today, in which they said the same thing:they're reaching out to kraken to get a delivery date. So we'll see
I have heard from others that Fab9 took 3 months to get them a manifold. I am praying I do not suffer the same fate.

I bought mine directly from Kraken about 2 years ago right when he started ramping up production. Mine probably took 3 months to get here, but the quality is fantastic and well worth the wait. Once you get the parts in your hands you won't believe how good the quality is for the price you paid. At least it impressed me after coming from BEGI/FM/Greddy quality stuff.

crash12190 09-17-2020 01:34 PM

I've seen how nice it is, that's why I wanted to get one! I wish they could've said they were on backorder or had a long lead time, rather than suggesting they are in stock.

From outward appearances at least, he seems pretty responsive on Facebook/his website. Fab9 on the other hand, well there's enough feedback already out there for you to make your own judgements.

crash12190 09-17-2020 04:44 PM

Kraken said they're sending out an order mid next week. Hopefully, mine is in that batch.
As for the build thread, I will work on finishing up all the odds and ends I can on the engine without the manifold and paint some spots in the engine bay.
More pics incoming!

I had the same experience. I ordered my t25 kraken kit 1.5 years ago, it took about 3 months for it to ship but then it showed up at my doorstep in 2 days. I think I caught them in the middle of a production run, they were posting pics of the parts on facebook. I was very happy with the build quality of the kit, the oil and water lines were a nice add in.

crash12190 09-20-2020 08:24 PM

Okay so it was a slow weekend, I had to swap a front wheel bearing on the daily LS400, that took my sunday morning up so I didnt get a huge chance to work on the miata. I did however get my center support bar cut out in preparation for a left lane designs front cooling bar.

I also opted for the saturn temperature sensor, so megasquirt will have that information as well. I opted this over the glowshift gauge.
Here is the pigtail part number.
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cf333cb97d.jpg
Saturn sensor is right at home!

Before! I want to raise the intercooler about an inch and a half.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...dee8f2fc55.jpg
My intercooler setup currently. Peep the 97 Montego blue NA daily ;) that will be a different tread for a later date.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f655db2bd8.jpg
After! I ran out of dremel wheels, I need to get more and trim just a little more from the passenger side, and clean up the driver side.

crash12190 09-29-2020 01:08 PM

Okay, so I am STILL WAITING on Fab9 to respond to me about the turbo kit status. I really am disappointed on how they have handled themselves.
That being said, I got to work on a couple things:

Hood vents from Spiked performance
-
Really am not a fan of any hood vents currently offered for the miata, The dream is getting a GV vented hood, but for now I will settle with these.
They had fantastic instructions, packaging, and communication. Not to mention they're cheaper than the other offerings. ($160 USD)
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4d5ac619ec.jpg
Vents installed. Looking good!
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...54bf4ceb88.jpg
The templates were awesome! Easy to install and make sure everything is even.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...08a34d9e74.jpg
First layer cut out! I must've gone through 8 dremel cut off wheels for these dang vents.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...268c376733.jpg
You can see most of the hood structure is still intact, I did not notice any loss of rigidity after the install.

Wiring harness for fuel injectors/ VVT made and installed.
-Pretty self-explanatory here. My old 1.6 harness was crusty, so this was for peace of mind.
Really debating if I should just bypass the injector adapters and convert the harness to EV14 style plugs. I may change my mind, we'll see.

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a154c0c5b1.jpg
Harness made, Not my prettiest work, but It will work just fine for me.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...efbfa7e50f.jpg
Before I zipped and tucked everything up!
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cf6de8b634.jpg
Nice and hidden!
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ecbcf4e270.jpg
Other two injector channels for sequential injection.
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...6c5ab8f3f2.jpg
Starting to look more like a finished engine!

So I am going to get the alternator installed tonight, and finish up the little odds and ends I can without the turbo manifold still. Hopefully, Fab9 decides to respond to me and let me know what the heck is going on.
Cheers for now!
-Y

crash12190 10-12-2020 09:28 AM

So. After some time I received the Kraken kit and WOW it surpassed my expectations in build quality. I had a damaged manifold due to the pinheads shipping it, but Kraken got me one 2 day'd and I got it yesterday (Sunday)
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...74d8763f4a.jpg
Super nice 3" downpipe. Flanges are super thick and V-band has a lip in it for better sealing. VERY impressed.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...70873062fb.jpg
Love the design here, hopefully they flow as amazing as everyone says!
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d1e00b1f76.jpg
This is the replacement, The original had marring on this flange from banging around.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d938b2f52e.jpg
KWISPY WELDS OMGSH

Needless to say, I was anxious to go ahead and get it installed and in the car.

crash12190 10-13-2020 10:45 AM

So that is what I did.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0f6e4ee341.jpg
But first I installed some steering rack risers, and SuperPro rack bushings. Did this mod on my Montego NA, loved the removal of bumpsteer and how much it tightened up the steering.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...43d08db1ba.jpg
Installed!
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...34eb887416.jpg
Clutch installed, 6-puck SPRUNG Comp. Stage 3
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...abac69ff48.jpg
6 speed is mated up and ready to go in, (take the shifter out, I did after I took this picture)
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c317bf2c54.jpg
IN SHE GOES
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7f00e94571.jpg
Ta-Da!
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ed5465b2fd.jpg
Fuel plumbing done, Not certain this is how I want it to stay, but it doesn't leak and doesn't look too terrible. So we'll go with it.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0925d76601.jpg
We have fuel pressure!!!!!!

Need to finish hooking everything up, and do some wiring for the LS coils and the VVT cam and crank sensors.

I will update with more pictures as I finish things!

Also Admin, how can I change the dang title of this thread?

Fireindc 10-18-2020 02:21 AM

Hey man, it looks beautiful. Krakens products really impressed me as well, you are going to love it!
