That looks really good. I'm impressed with this scoop, what is it off of again?

Any underside pictures on how exactly you secured it?

It's a duct; use duct tape?

I'm too lazy to go take a picture now but I did it the same way Cspence did

Cspence 04-11-2010 08:42 PM

Looks good! especially since it took out most of the area that was cracked on your hood. Is it all fastened down or is it just sitting in place for now? (Not sure if you had the right machine screws)

miataspeed2005 04-11-2010 08:50 PM

Yea it's bolted down... I took the vent to the store and checked what size I need it, they were 4mm ones... I don't know if it was cause today was warmer but my ait's were about 15* hotter

Just cover the vent then uncover it during two successive pulls.

^^^ Yea I'm gonna try it tommorrow... I don't see how the vent would affect the IC negatively...I thought the air would go through the IC, radiator and then out of the vent.... I think I'm also gonna tape so strings to the vent to see if the air is actually coming out or being sucked in

Your goin all out, lol. I'm in for results! I really dont see how it could possibly increase your intake temps though with the underhood temps significantly dropping. Maybe where we put them on our hoods is a high pressure area so air is going in and not out like you say....go cut off your shoe laces and try it out

miataspeed2005 04-11-2010 10:10 PM

Either way I doubt im gonna take it out since I already hacked my hood up but yesterday I was at 14-16*C and we beat our cars pretty bad and today normal cruising I was at 24*C

Still can't seem to find any for sale besides that one chrome one on egay.

here's an underside pic...one side it has a little notch that goes between the hood and the other side has those metal tabs that you see in the pic

Soooooo I just did the string test and FAIL! the air gets sucked into the engine bay :(

urdoingitwrong.

Bummer. Got another hood?

miataspeed2005 04-12-2010 05:38 PM

I wonder if I made a whole under tray if the air will actually go through the IC-Rad-then out of the vent

Vashthestampede 04-12-2010 05:49 PM

Looks good man. Sorry to hear its working the opposite way than you want it to though.

My gills on my hood are in that area, but I always looked at them as more of a heat extractor when the car is sitting. I don't think they really offer much more than that, besides looks. Don't forget, they also let water spill all over the turbo and intake manifold. :vash:

The big vent on my hood is where I assume all the air is pushed out of.

Bummer. Common mistake having it too far back on the hood. I see people put vents in that same position all the time to vent heat from the turbo. The negative pressure area for venting the hoods is far more forward than people think. Would need to be between or just behind the headlights to work as intended.

At least it looks good and took care of a damaged area of the hood!

Cspence 04-12-2010 06:37 PM

Be optimistic about it....at least its pulling cool air in right over the turbo....also at a stop it is DEFINITLY functional as a heat extractor. (sitting at lights, traffic, idling as you BS with people - I do this alot etc)

I was going to try it on my car today as well, but had no string. Not sure if my giant hole in my bumper will make any difference with the functionality of the vent, probably not... I bet our naca ducts do shit as well, string that thang!

I guess this is why they have wind tunnels, but who gives a shit, it looks good! :giggle:

*EDIT - I take back what I said on the naca duct....I was just reviewing a few logs from today and I noticed on average my IAT's drop a solid 5* (10* in some instances) when accelerating and at cruising speeds vs when at a stop and/or slow speeds
