DS1 has a horrible Build Thread.

So while browsing the 'bay I found a new seller that has a pretty decent little "kit" for sale. Its cheap as can be: TD05 Turbo Kit SS Manifold Downpipe 90 93 Mazda Miata MX 5 NA 1 6L B6ZE RS V6 | eBay

After that, for a SUPER SIMPLE setup the only other thing I would need is one of those cheap 12:1 FMU's, some oil lines, and some piping to go directly to the intake manifold.

My little 1.6 had an incident with Mobile 1 and is know somewhat unhappy, so I figure what the heck, lets throw $450 bucks at a turbo and make it a weekend project. Worst that could happen is I need a new engine.

Anything I'm missing here? Is this a truly horrible idea or just stupid enough that its still fun?

Thank guys! As always, I am jealous of all your turbo setups.

I don't even have to click the link to tell you to save your money. Seriously. You may get a weekend out of it, and it probably won't be that rewarding.

Why not put money into doing a 1.8L swap and actually have a decent platform for an eventually worthy turbo set up?

Do you really want to give someone this stupid your money?

lol more fun:

first..

Direct Bolt-On Installation, Requires NO Modification

then...

Modification might be Required for Some Vehicles

I wonder what they consider JDM design??

I know I know, "its totally pointless and blah blah, why not buy a Begi"

....because I really don't care that much. My Miata is slow. If I can make it a little faster for cheap then thats awesome. I'm never going to upgrade it, and I'm never going to do anything crazy with it.

The ad is hilarious though, isnt it? But thats what PayPal/eBay protection is for.

So, you're suggesting to just shop out the parts separately from the usual eBay sellers (tacotaco and all those guys), right?

FRT_Fun Jul 4, 2013 02:58 PM

I'm saying do whatever you want. Chances are no matter what we say you will do whatever you want anyways. No one here will tell you this is a good idea (unless they are being sarcastic). So go ahead. Do it.

I'm just here trying to get a little input from those who have gone before. Just a fun thing, nothing serious. But I figured this would happen on this forum so I probably should've just not bothered to start the thread. Sorry for taking up your time.

And you have it. Avoid the eBay kit. It's not worth the money, time, or hassle. You asked for the input, and seem to be butthurt that it isn't what you want to hear.

Ds1 Jul 4, 2013 03:14 PM

Okay, throw me a little something else. I know lots of guys around here run chinachargers. Whats your suggestion for one of those, a downpipe, manifold, and FMU? Looking for 5-6psi max.

So, basically, the question is whether you should throw $450 into the garbage? Because that's literally what we're talking about here.

But thats what PayPal/eBay protection is for.
Good luck filing a claim against a vendor who shipped you exactly what he promised.

I love this shit... Oh but i want to run it at low psi... it doesnt matter how low you go.. crappy shit will be crappy... Perhaps you'll get a month out of that garbage manifold if you baby it before the soda can walls start cracking. The turbo is questionable, the downpipe is no different than the manifold, the fuel control is garbage.. at last there is no intake piping so you'll need to rig something up for that.. and to be perfectly honest if you seriously consider this turbo kit and are nagging about it something tells me you're not up to the task.

TL;DL... Greedy is shit, and this is a lot worse for about the same price.

hey man no need to bash greeeedy setup people lol

Hey its a good kit...after you replace 99% of it. You can still keep the stickers on the doors.

LOL. Hey at least I'm not saying how awesome the Greedy kit is...

Okay, fine. Change of pace. What would be GOOD (or at least decent) components that I could buy to put together a low PSI, simple non-intercooled kit? Remember, just the basics.

RussellT94 Jul 4, 2013 07:48 PM

Check out the begi shanghai kits.

cowboys647 Jul 4, 2013 09:15 PM

Yes definitely check out the Shanghai-S kit for Begi. Great deal for what you get. Before going that route at least read the stickies on here. Specifically the ebay turbo sticky which would answer every question as to why said kit that you posted is crap

triple88a Jul 4, 2013 09:22 PM

Shanghai kits are lovely for a low budget kit.. dont forget you still need a proper way of controlling the fuel... thats with ANY kit though.

Ds1 Jul 5, 2013 02:22 PM

But it's $1600 and still has a Chinacharger :burncash:

Thats why I'm saying, a DIY kit with a decent Chinacharger, Begi manifold, cheap ducting, cheapish downpipe, cheap oil lines, and simple (cheap) FMU and I would think it would be good to go. Right? Anything big I'm missing out on here? And that would be (about) $500 cheaper than the Kit from Begi...

No that's basically it.
Except many chinachargers use weird footprints for the downpipe that won't bolt up to the begi "standard" dp whereas begi's will. And will be ported to avoid boost creep.

But if you want to piece it together yourself to save a couple hundred there's nothing wrong with that.

Only issue I have with your post is the FMU. For the love of turbo miata's, would you please just DITCH THAT TERRIBLE IDEA already? you'll be happier in the long run
