Everything upside down and expensive in Australia

Hey guysngals. My names Mario (20), Long time shit poster first time poster.
I usually spend my days shit posting on the Australian mx5 Facebook groups but ive decided that i might actually document my silver piece of shit before i forget what has even been done to it. Well this was my first car and i've had it for 3 years since then I haven't done a single track event, its taught me so much in the time ive had it and gotten me through so many tough times. In the 3 years ive had it its gone over a couple of changes. Its been naturally aspirated (~12 wheel dogpower), had a 50 dry shot of nitrous (139whp), ran a Eaton m45 supercharger off a mini cooper (174whp). Now its time for bigger numbers and more expensive things after spinning the main bearings in the b6 while it was supercharged With the goal of 400whp in mind I was on a path to gather all these fun parts that hurt my apprentice wallet. some how put them together because ide much rather fuck it up myself then pay someone a ridiculous amount to fuck it up. whats in this mistake that was built in my bedroom you ask? bp4w block Supertech 9.1 84mm pistons w/ WisecoXX rings (.20 top, .18 bottom, or the other way around? i don't remember) Manly H beam rods Polished crank acl bearings boundary stage1 oil pump (2 shims) Bp4w Head casting cleaned up in ports Supertech 1mm os intake valve Supertech 1mm os exhaust valve Supertech shim under bucket lifters Supertech dual valve springs (63lbs) oem bp4w cams 84mm mls bp4w gasket Blox adjustable cams other little bits and pieces flowforce 640cc injectors (will need to be upgraded) radium fuel rail Ati Superdamper skunk 2 manifold skunk 2 throttle body megasquirt 2 clutch masters 6 puck CCI 13lbs flywheel ls1 coils Things sitting under my bed waiting to be installed Kraken t2 Manifold Garret gt2876r .86 IWG Intercooler and piping (2.25") 3" exhaust (just muffler) Ill try and include all the pictures I have, its not many because ive never thought ide post something like this (not in chronological order) |
welcome. looks like a solid start
|
Jeebuz, when I was 20 I was busy walking uphill both ways and making $0.25 an hour. Nice work.
Maybe I should move this living room decoration into my bedroom. |
I think mum would prefer that you just had dirty mags in your room!
|
It was penis inspection day today at work so i got off early and had some time to install my new injectors. I got some bosch ev14 1000cc injectors that i picked up new for 300 bucks off a mate whos tuner told him that they're too small for his build so i bought them off him. I then sold my bosch ev14 640cc injectors for 250 bucks. all in all i upgraded from 640cc to new 1000cc for 50 bucks so I think I won that
|
I learnt that mum wasn't lying that if you play with your throttle too much it'll fall off. I think ill loctite the new bolts in when i find the size I gotta buy after the other 3 fell on the road somewhere. I was wondering why it was idling at 4khttps://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a3657b4634.jpg

That inlet hose.
|
All that money and a dryer hose connection. I should give you 100 negative cats. No way that is airtight.
|
I think that might be aussie intake tubing, supposedly smooth on the inside.
|
As for the disgusting intake tubing its a temporary solution while i run in the motor and until i put the turbo on. It works but ide assume the ripples on the inside dont help performance. If it makes you blokes feel anyworse i use 65mm pvc befor but had to change because of the clearence i needed for the thermo fan.
quick cheap simple. Nothing more nothing less |
It's ribbed for his pleasure.

Ouch

Its been awhile since my last update, haven't updated for awhile because I cooked my sciatic nerve. I don't have any pictures of the recent things done to my car so here's a list
- get bolts for throttle body, realize they're too long, so instead of returning them for the right size I spend 30 mins cutting down four bolts and cleaning the thread - bolt up throttle body -transmission seized at 90kph but broke free so got my mate to drag me 20kms home with a snatch strap (so fucking sketchy in peak hour traffic) -had the shits with the car sitting there so i stuck it up on jack stands and decided to swap out the transmission by my self, took four fucking painful hours (honestly the worst fucking pain to do with cooked nerves and a heap of ripped up muscle but nothing painkillers cant fix) -cars been sitting for a couple days now and ive got nothing to do so im thinking of setting up the piedash while i give myself time to actually recover lmao On the plus sized i bought my self one of those fancy 1650nm cordless impact wrenches and fucked a heap of bolts up |
I have just googled kraken and now going through every thread, would like to see an update
|
I think im getting somewhere, or im working backwards? I dont know what im doing but I know that my wallet seems to be bleeding ALOT
- cold side intake is on aside from the intercooler so i just slapped a pod filter over the silicone for now -turbo manifold is on with the turbo -3 inch exhaust is on and alot louder then i thought but i guess it is what it is -bought a wal BROOOO 255lph fuel pump and im just gonna hope thats enough for >350whp on e85 -The gt2876 that i got second hand is fucked (what a suprise....) so i ordered a gtx2867 .86 because they where having a sale and i couldent really be bothered thinking too much about it so i just bought that -Ordered a gfb ebc3 because even though i have a solenoid wired for my ms2 i thought I really need more ufo lights in my interior -Ordered a bunch of 1/8npt fittings because in aus our parts stores only have 1/8 bsp fittings so its not as simple as walking down the road as it is for you blokes -Picked up a bracket and ls2 coils off beavis here in aus and bartunes building a custom lead for my application I've been driving around with no oil or water in the turbo because it was just pissing out of the seals (yes restrictor was in place and turbo was seeing required pressure), it sound pretty mad it just makes hissing sounds for now until it becomes a very expensive paperweight and a lesson to myself so far so good, I think im on track again but who knows what will happen next.https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e32e13fe78.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...385e537ad9.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...490d9c86fd.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0afe1922cc.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a805da0968.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...17b5d5381e.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...f92239c60a.jpg |
-Intercooler and piping, drilled and tapped cold side of intercooler for gm iat sensor
-bigger thermo fan as the 9" one overheated in traffic -instead of having a long rubber tube running around the plenum of the intake manifold i cut up a piece of 32mm Copper and expanded the ends, so in the case of the hose failing it will be a lot easier to make something up on the side of the road then ordering another Escalade hose from the usa I ruined my plastic undertray while installing the intercooler so im gonna make something out of like a 3mm composite or ill do something with asome 15mm ply and make a diffuser and air damhttps://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e82c219b87.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...331bddf5a4.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...0aa2037808.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...5d9f04f209.jpg combo |
Been a week since my last update so thought ill stick it in here
Gtx2876 g2 came in the mail and installed Inconel studs w/ copper nuts intercooler piping setup colorful door cards makeup 5psi spring in wastegate, currently running some very safe timing just messing around with having a turbo mx5 The oil filter sandwich plate I got was too (short?) so atm i've tightened the shit out of the oil filter to seal it. For a permanent, less sketchy option I either need to get a thicker sandwich plate by 20~30mm or cut down the thread for the oil filter but hesitant due to contamination. I could just stick a tampon down the pipe and pull it out when its cut and cleaned up but want to look into other solutions. (adding a spacer on the adapter nut could be a idea but its on the list of things, open to opinions)https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...93415bcc7a.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d32145a16f.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...56068f4931.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e40805f3ab.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...b77baf7a95.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ca84f25a09.jpg https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...7f35dfe348.jpg |
Even with the temporary things like convoluted tubing, this is looking nice. If you are talking about the big M20x1.5 threaded rod onto which the oil filter screws - the "cleanest" way to shorten that would be to duck down to Bunnings or Autobarns, grab two M20x1.5 nuts, lock them together on the rod, and just unscrew it from the block. Shorten to size, then replace - that's how I did it. :)
|
... and how nice is that Kraken stuff - crikey!!! Also totally get the thread title.
Am also building in Australia, and have learnt that if I see a price on a miata part in the U.S., by the time exchange rates, freight, customs and GST all take their bite, it is exactly double the US advertised price. I know that whinging about how much your project car costs is such a first world problem that it makes others throw up in their mouth, but a $20K build instantly turning into a $40K build sure does clarify the mind, and sharpen your skills of rhetoric and logic when explaining to the Significant Other. |
Thanks Ninerwfo, I ended up just pulling it out and cutting 20mm off it then cleaning up the threads;it isn't leaking yet so thats a better result then previous.
Ended up driving around with autotune on to get the fueling in a decent place, didn't get too far up in the rev range, around 5500 or so. To be honest it wasnt too bad, it picked up speed pretty quickly to the point where i had to back off or its loss of licence for 6 months. Had a intercooler pipe blow off because its only held on by a hose clamp and I don't have a proper clamp for that size unlike the rest, still supprised it creeped up to 11psi on a 5psi spring I don't know what to do about this bloody oil pump, its still leaking after nipping up the bolts which is pretty annoying because i put a fair bit of time in prepping both surfaces and sealing it with black rtv If someone has a solution that doesn't involve dropping the supframe or pulling the motor that would be awesome. I have to agree with you on the price, Ive put a fair bit of dollerydoos into it but i'm hoping that i get a nice end result i'm happy with, that doesn't involve rebuilding the motor. I'm sure if you speak to the US retailers and ask them to give you a dodgy invoice thats under 1k so you dont get hit with customs tax they should be alright. Also pulled a heap of timing on everything above atmosphere just to be safe until i get it to a tuner, I can live with high egt's instead of a cooked piston https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a5879360a9.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...9674c919aa.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...673ff2024a.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...c015fd130e.png |
I dig your license plate

How are you finding the Kraken? Installs easy enough?
I have one coming in the mail and am keen to see it in person and see how it performs. |
@Beavis
Its pretty good although ive only driven with it on for about 4 hours or so in traffic and a heap of pulls. install was simple, access to manifold and turbo studs was easy enough to get to with a ring spanner. Ive got the manifold hot to the point where its discolored and water beads off it several times and gone through heaps of heat cycles in that 4 hours. although I would heavily suggest inconel studs as the stainless ones provided didn't last long at all. You cant have the outlet of a t28 pointing directly vertical due to it interfering with body. ive clocked it about 20~30 degrees from vertical to clear the chassis and radiator hoses on the na chassis. the 5 bolt to vband adapter he sells does interfere with the stock heatercore hose placement but is simply fixed by bending it out of the way, its not the adapter itself its the added circumference of the vband that makes contact. The oil supply hoses and fittings provided are unknown and was never answered to what type or brand they where so i had to adapt it to what i needed. |
Well its been abit since my last update because ive been waiting on a couple of things but now theyve come and its time to post
-gfb3 boost controller -turbosmart fpr1200 -ls2 coils wired up -50amp fuel pump relay -bkr7e spark plugs -compression test Mounted the boost controller on one of those little things next to the steering wheel, and siliconed it on so its easily clips into place without ruining the dash itself. Picked up a turbosmart fpr1200 with barb fittings and set to 40psi at atmos; its a 1:1 rising regulator so it should give me a nice stable fuel pressure on boost. It's just tekscrewed it into the firewall but looks neat so i guess it went together easy enough. Ls2 coil harness wired into the depinned igniter connector and a plug and play fuel pump relay upgrade, both thanks to Bartune. bkr7e plugs because why not. Did a compression test and got ~160psi across the board, I'm pretty happy with that since its bored to 84mm without increasing the stroke Coming up on the to do list to: Walbro 255lph pump install new fuel filter install fix up inter cooler piping and bead it lagging around copper coolant tube get to 1000kms and finish break in then swap to full synth oil, (probs 10w40) empty tank and fill with e85 and drive around for abit 4bar map sensor install (2.5bar current) get tuned on e85 only because there's a nice station 10 mins away frohttps://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...80972a4b5c.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d725ca2085.jpgOld relay https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d2cbef7954.jpg50amp generic relay with pnp loom https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...605e87d5a4.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1fafc0a71d.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...208d75c2d1.jpg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4270a0b866.jpg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...686f378241.jpg https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...95ecc51d4c.jpg m me |
Got the Fuel pump in, had to cut off this weird female oring connector thing but went together pretty easily then drove around with autotune of for abit.
Picked up a mazda gtx valve cover with some rough paint that i traded for a set of valve stem seals I had laying around, Still unsure if ill polish or paint it. Got a Motorola absolute 4 bar map sensor, cant get the config for megasquirt since the calibration isnt listen on the site i bought it off for 5v and 0v. so I'm hoping one of you guys can help me with the math since algebra was not my strong point at all, They've given me 4.8V @ 400kpa and 0.2V @ 20kpa (-80kpa from atmosphere) so from my understanding it's V4.800 = 400, V0.200 = 20 . What does V5.0 and V0.0 https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...79cb4f1222.png https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...036f4e8777.jpg https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...ebef350293.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...61dfb46095.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...e73fc5ba84.png https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...de0ff67e1d.jpg |
Ended up figuring out the values thanks to Bartunes help.
While I havent really been motivated to do much on the car itself i thought it would be fun to work on the valve cover. Here what I got as a end result, which isnt too crap considering ive only put about 50 bucks into paint and an fittings. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...06d46992be.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...cd7fb6039e.jpg https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...081a8d3975.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...567f482bc5.jpg https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...72fa535f44.jpg https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...125563e988.jpg https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...4ccb3de1ae.jpg |

Its been a couple of months since my last update so lets go over it
- Ive ditched the ls2 coils because both sets that i bought of a "reputable source" where faulty, bought msd superconductor leads in the hopes it would work but no luck so just ended up switching to toyota cops which isnt too bad because now i can get past 8 psi and have a working tach - Made up a aluminum hot side intercooler piping because i wasn't happy with the previous setup - an6 main vaccume/boost line from the intake manifold to the vacuum manifold - changed the fuel filter and rubber lines under the car to some nice gates barricade e85 safe hose -changed to full synth oil since ive hit 2000kms and to get it ready for the dyno So once I did all that i took it to the tuner, it was a hour drive up north but it was a super nice drive, dropped it off on a Saturday and its currently Friday ready to pick up tomorrow. its been the scariest couple of days wondering weather or not its going to shit itself up there thankfully the only call i got was to tell me that he maxed out the ev14 1000cc injectors (54psi base pressure) and the clutch masters 6 puck clutch started to slip with more torque On to the end results 246.8rwkw 670nm @22psi for you Americans thats 331whp and 494ftlbs @19psi Cant wait to drive it and see how it feels to drive something fast considering the fastest thing ive driven is a 300hp legacy wagon. Honestly the quest for more power has already begun even though i haven driven the car yet. already looking at 2000cc injectors, twin pump, transmission upgrade ect. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...783db2444.jpeg https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...d0c8f4eea.jpeg https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...a719dc2dba.jpg https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.mia...1a21a8301c.jpg |
Good numbers, Jez does a good safe tune.

I assume the 'reputable' coil packs you had were the ones i sent you. Weren't they just a random old used set I sent you free with the bracket?
