Only 4 hours away.
I'm almost serious.
From when I last talked to him there were mechanical and tuning **** that needed to be done. I don't remember if any real fab work was needed or not.

My address still requires OBD2. You need a cousin somewhere I don't have any wives. I'll take your turbos though.

But seriously, you either:

1) find a shady shop
2) do a swap to stock every two years
3) register it in one of the few smog friendly counties
4) try and keep it registered out of state

1. Buy a cheap beater Miata of same year model and color.
2. Put your VIN tag on it.
3. Get tested and pass
4. Move VIN tag back to your car.
5. Drive it

It's kinda like wearing a suit and tie to work to get paid, then going out to the club later in a dress, stockings, and lipstick to have a good time.

Vin locations the actually check

Dashboard.

Faes car would be a horrible racekor. It would never make it to the track, so never actually be driven.

Swapping vin is legal as long as you contact the police department and have an officer supervise it & go over the proof of ownership.

oh I didn't read too far back concerning the legality or lack thereof behind swapping his vin.

I just had to do that since I put a dashboard from a different car in my donor.

How many of you guys in California ever had a VIN checked anywhere other than the dash at the inspection station?

I suggested swapping it back immediately anyway. I would just say the car had been badly wrecked and was full of junkyard parts if anyone asked. And remove the extra VIN stickers from the junker anyway.

Y'all act like you never registered a stolen car before, lol. J/k

It's been 4 or 5 years since I last had a car inspected in CA, but my recollection is that they scan the barcode on the driver's side B pillar with a reader attached to the computer & modem which communicates with the DMV.

Not sure what they do if Earl Scheib carelessly painted over it.

It might be easier to just dash swap rather than swapping vin tags. You cant drill out the rivets with the dash in if the car has a windshield. Also, exact matching rivets have to be special ordered. You need the 3/16" flange size on a 1/4" rivet and the flange needs to be painted black. When I did the dash swap I just drilled everything out to use 3/16" but it doesnt quite look right.
