Some Colorado "Share the road" plates would look good on this bitch.

cops are smart enough to figure out that out of state plates on a car with black wheels means something other than "just visiting". especially after 30 days.

This.

When I lived in CA, a co-worker who had moved from Colorado kept his bone-stock Honda Camry registered in his sister's name with CO plates, simply because he was cheap and lazy. Despite being a totally unremarkable car, it proved to be a cop-magnet. He was eventually fined and forced to register it in CA.

This is an old trick, all the cops and judges know about it, and while it sounds good in theory, it doesn't work in practice.

Call an attorney in Massachusetts and set up a corporation. Transfer ownership from "faefae, resident of cali" to "Corporation of Fae, resident of mass".

Issue "stock" in your company by exchanging shares for $50,000. Agree to accept any running car as payment for one share of stock so long as the buyer of the stock agrees to take full responsibility for the car, and also agrees that should anything happen to the car or wish to buy their car back from the corporation, they will pay $50,000 or one share of stock back to the corporation as a penalty.

I wonder what will happen when all of the ricer cars in California are suddenly owned by fae's corporation in massachussets??? Or some place like Ohio where there is no emissions testing and every administrative function can be done either online or through the mail.

Hmm, we have a bunch of military guys with out of state plates here that seem to get away with this trick for years. They probably get harassed for it (I don't know) but none of them have been forced to re-register that I know of.

Being in the US military gets you some special privileges. One of them is being able to call one state your home, while you are stationed elsewhere. Lots of military car guys will choose to use FL, SC, LA, to be their home states due to less then stringent car testing. Then just bring their car to wherever the military sends them.

Sidebar:

I've just become interested by something...

A car-rental agency buys a car. The car is owned by the rental agency. The car is titled and registered in some random state, and inspected to that state's requirements. A person rents the car in that state and drives it to California, where circumstances dictate that it winds up remaining in CA, being passed from one renter to another for 2-3 years until such time as it has to be ferried back to its home state for re-inspection. If the home state does not require periodic inspection, the vehicle remains in CA indefinitely.

An individual leases a car in CA. The car is sold by the dealership in CA to a finance company located in Delaware, which titles it in Delaware. The individual is required to register the vehicle in CA, and subject it to CA inspections.

There seems to be an element of nuance here which remains invisible to me.

The corporation owns the car and Fae rents it from the corp.

Florida is full of rental cars with NY plates.

Hmm thanks EnronFooger. I think that this could work but it would probably require a corporate insurance binder. Also, I think liability is transferred to the driver which means I'd be responsible for registering the car in... california.

**** me. I actually have this problem for both my miata and my subaru. Maybe I can indeed get away with remaining a Maryland resident and telling popo that give me trouble that I'm just in Cali for short term work. Lots of people there are..

Speaking of trust I should take some pics of my latest subaru modifications. I cut out the radiator support and the front.. subframe.

If you're going to do the out-of-state-corporation thing, you want it in Montana. Supposedly ots of people do this to avoid paying the annual VLF on their motorhomes/etc. No, I have no idea if it's legal or not.
