A Fast K miata?

Well guys I have been buying some parts from the man himself....K miata. So far I have a turbo BP with a gtx 2860 that will be coming off in a few months to do the swap. However I have decided to go a bit insane with the build. I am going to be doing a turbo K24A2 build. So with that I will be trying to push around 500ish whp. So a bit of background, I have owned 3 different miata and worked on them for a while. I have had two turbo builds and now Im ready for some power. I originally was just going to do the K swap and call it a day for a while but Im currently stuck away from home for a while longer and have been saving money so time to blow through some. I have always owned bolt on cars and been envious of other peoples projects. It my turn now that I have become a lot more financially secure and in a much better spot. I will be hopefully document the build here. Any help will be much appreciated!

Most obvious build thread title ever...

I mean, has anyone seen a slow kmiata?

Made a phone call to me k Miata last night for me and might change a few things. He suggested the ZF 6spd so might go that way! They have some of the best customer service I have ever received. If anyone has a lead on a good ZF 6 speed let me know.

Been looking around the google machine but I’m not as good as some. Will the ZF 6 spd hold 450 ftlbs regularly? Is anyone using on on a high hp build and how they hold up over time? @KMiata do you have some high hp guys running this with decent torque?

matrussell122 04-19-2020 01:23 AM

Itl easily hold the power.

Not sure if anyone keeps up with their youtube but Fasterporms just put down 495/360ish on a turbo completely stock K24a2 with only a oil pump upgrade to the type S pump. Go take a look if your interested. Gives me motivation to get more parts ordered and get this thing put together this year. It also helps when Im looking at the torque the 6spd will hold it no problem.

We have never seen a customer make enough torque with a turbo BP or turbo K to overwhelm the ZF 5-speed, ZF 6-speed, or Getrag 260. I have actually never talked to a single customer who has had a gearbox failure since we released these trans options in 2017. So you should be just fine!

All I am hearing is we need to call 4 Piston Racing for a 1000hp k20 to try to destroy Davids BMW transmission.

Made a bit of progress. I bought the ZF 6spd kit and the getrag diff kit from KMiata! I got them about 3 weeks ago so I'm waiting on them to ship and get to the house. I also found a 05 caddy sts getrag diff at the Pick and Pull near me where my buddies pulled for me. Im ready to get home and start wrenching on this car!

I also did the one thing most of us should never do and that is make a cost breakdown. Here it is for anyone that is curious.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...YfXFxl/pubhtml

I still have quite a few things to gather and get together before it is ready to be put together after I get back home, but most of the things are there. Only thing now is to find a transmission (harder than I thought it would be).

matrussell122 06-02-2020 10:00 AM

Itll cost more that that by a good amount.

What in particular are you talking about? That is the full breakdown of the things I have currently and most of the parts remaining. I am expecting to spend about 12-15k out of pocket after everything is sold off my car currently. Any insight would be helpful or anything I might be missing!

I think the big thing that is skewing your numbers to the low end is the fact that you don't have pricing input for a lot of the high dollar components.

I'm at just about $10k on my n/a K24A2 swap and I bargain shopped a LOT of the parts from Black Friday this last year. I also added some non-necessary things to get there, but you get the idea. The small things snowball up fast if you really document every item. I have mine all documented here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

Let's just say I took my build right now and wanted to boost it and do the BMW trans / Getrag setup. Turbo alone is close to a $2k adder not to mention all the oil feed / return lines and fittings, intercooler, intercooler piping, couplers, etc. It would be safe to assume a $3k adder minimum for boost components. BMW trans kit is close to a $2k adder by time you pay for trans, driveshaft, adapters, mounts, slave lines, and shifter parts. Keep in mind the OEM mazda trans and components really isn't worth much to resell unless you have a 6spd. Getrag kit to add (assuming stage 2 billet hubs) is $2k + your Getrag diff costs, you might get a few bucks back assuming you have a torsen as they sell for decent pricing, but keeping $2k as a budgeting ballpark is reasonable. Last but not least, you have the exhaust to keep in mind (and the price isn't listed in your sheet). I've spent $1600 on the full Kmiata catback. Unless you have the skills (and time) to fabricate your complete exhaust yourself, I'd expect to be right around that same figure. Lets just throw $1.5k at it for easy numbers.

So where I'm going with this is, budget high and if you come under budget, you have won the car modding game . Given my total cost rollup right now per my link (~$10k) and all of the items you are looking to add on top of that noted above in bold ($3k + $2k + $2k + $1.5k), I'd fully expect a turbo Kswap with Getrag and BMW trans to fall in the $18.5k ballpark. One could even say $20k would be a safe bet to make as you will run into those "well as long as I'm in here" mods during the build process. Nearly doubling the cost of the swap to go down the boost path with a reliable powertrain is essentially why I chose to keep my setup n/a (well... at least for the foreseeable future :))
