Attachment 227607 I had it dyno'd today for NASA classing, it was ... super disappointing and yet makes me kind of laugh because of how quick it already is while I am missing like 50 fuckin ft lb down at 3500 based on what I was expecting. Here is the graph, along with another S1 that Emilio posted at some point. Boost table looks like this on that one Attachment 227611 NASA average is 196whp, car weighed 2398lb with me in it and a little over half a tank at the last event. 198whp avg / 2300lb / 245 R7 is one way to run it, another is 209avg / 2300lb / 245 Toyo RR or RC1. I guess the plan is to bring the car over to Tony at UMS to get the thing mapped correctly, fortunately UMS is about fifteen minutes from my house. |
Def take it to UMS. Have them check W/G actuator arm adjustment while they're at it. Just 5% more duty can add quite a bit of power. That high boost map is likely in trans hurtin' territory so be gentle with it if you use it. I'd try to keep torque below 280 lbs and power below 300whp to keep the box alive. If its
starts to hang up in gears or hard to shift when hot, put a trans cooler on it. Good to see you got it on track again. |

Have your tuner build you four more maps in 3~5 horsepower increments. Two above and two below your cap. Dynos vary so if you blow the dyno at a race, you can quckly load a new map while on the dyno without having to go get it tuned again. If that happens, ask NASA to put anti-tamper tape over your tuning port. One of the rules I asked NASA to create when we were racing is to make Bluetooth dongles illegal. We were not using them but we saw competitors cars with them and didn't like it. |
You're correct, I didn't tune on the dyno. I'm just running the car as purchased and with the map that was on it as purchased, so as far as I am aware this is how it was raced in S1. I think I had a fundamental misunderstanding as to how much things can move around, so I'm happy you've pointed it out to me. I also think I need to stop making assumptions about this car in general.
I like your tune idea, it is even more necessitated in that we don't really have a local tuner with a dynopack -- UMS has a dynapack. We will see how it goes, I'll call tomorrow. |

If you only run with NASA in one region, find out which Dynojet (Not dynapack) they use. If it's mobile, go to it and do 3 back to back baseline pulls just the way they do, SAE corrected, hood open, yadda. Then without changing anything and preferably same day or at least same weather conditions, do 3 back-to-back baselines pulls on your local tuning dyno. Get weather station data and note SAE correction on both sets of pulls. Get printouts for all 6 pulls and each 3 combined. You now have a correction factor for your local tuner to whatever NASA uses and can make those "safety" maps with a clear idea of what you might need on race day.
We also bring a flash drive and pull the .drf files for the session from the PC. The Dynojet viewing software is free. From there you can overlay, compare, analyze, etc. |
The local dyno that everyone here uses was called AZ Dyno Chip but I believe Rudd Performance or something like that bought the shop out.
That being said MCE mobile dyno guys do randomly show up to events, and their dyno seems to be something of a random number generator. If their dyno is on site, NASA will use it as the official dyno. If they're not there, then any dyno compliance (really rare) will likely happen at either Rudd or Xtreme. They basically tamper tape your ECU/hood/gas cap and then you tow it there for the compliance check. MCE will be at Chuckwalla so if you go there, try to get on the dyno before any competition and then adjust your classing accordingly so you're good for the weekend. Also UMS is usually only 5 to 10WHP low compared to the local dynojets so Tony will be able to get you plenty close enough and then you can just adjust with a little weight once you find out your final numbers on a dynojet. |
UMS had an appointment on 2/8, so I grabbed that. MCE should be dynoing on Friday 2/12 before Chuckwalla so I'll swap tunes there if needed and update my sheet.
Too bad, I think the AMP records are well within reach with the proper tune, it is the Chuckwalla ones that I don't think are as easy. East will be easy, I was almost there with the S2000. I hold West CCW and I think West CW is doable since Tage holds it and he barely edged me out in my friend's S2000 on sticker A7s, more power, and less weight than my S2000. |
The deal with MCE was traditionally the location of the "weather station". The temp, baro and humidity sensor array in a cage just behind the drum. Gets much hotter than ambient with lower SAE correction which makes you blow the dyno. By a lot.
First discovered this at NASA nats in 2013. The dude stuck a fan in there with an extension cord and it worked for the most part. If the sensor array is still in that cage and there's no fan, you gonna blow the dyno. |
Haha, what, that is wild. It is not clear to me how that could be okay, you'd think you'd have a bunch of people blowing the dyno and not just the "flew too close to the sun" types. Hopefully they moved it.

Ran Arizona Motorsports Park over the weekend, won TT4 both days with a 1:46 CW and a 1:47 CCW.
I brought Toyo RRs with the intention of running them CCW on Sunday to take a shot at the lap record but I lost a tire first lap out in the first warmup session so I was on 25+ HC RC1s that I corded on Sunday. Attachment 227605 Attachment 227606 Anyway, as I figure the car out more I'm loving it and I've had basically no issues since the initial thing. I weighed 2385 with an almost empty tank so I went searching for a bit of weight. Found another 10lb in the doors and I'll be replacing the oversized traditional battery with a lighter AGM battery, gutting the hood and trunk supports, and removing a few other little things. |

You can spend the effort getting a little weight out but you could just as easily turn the power up a tiny bit since you've got a tuning appointment soon.
I wouldn't gut the hood, it gets WAY too floppy at speed without them and you save almost no weight. The trunk you can skin and use four pins though. And the doors can be cut apart way more like you said. |

edit: to add context to the below since I realized I hadn't posted it. I tuned to 210whp at UMS. Before and after graphs below.
Attachment 227603 Kinda brutal weekend at Chuckwalla. MCE boned me, as expected, I made 223whp and it averaged out to 216whp. This worked out fine in that I just kept it above half a tank. Car fuckin rips. 216avg and ran it right around 2400lb on Toyo RRs. Attachment 227604 On Saturday CW I broke the TT4 record in the first session with a 56.6. Second session Erik Davis strapped on some sticker Hoosiers and put down a fucking 54.3, which ended also up being quicker than anyone TT3. He also won ST3 and broke the lap record there too with a 53.0 (switchable tune car). The day turned into a sandstorm after lunch, but there is no way I was going to find 2 seconds anyway. 2nd place for the day. Today going CCW it was also a sandstorm all day, I only ran two sessions. 56.3 for me, 53.0 for Erik which would have also put him in second for TT3 by a quarter of a second. He overall pole'd ST and won ST3 with a 51.3. 2nd place for the day, again. I had pred-T times in the 55's both directions but couldn't make it happen. Chuckwalla was a good training ground for carrying a bunch of corner speed in this car but clearly I suck and need more seat time / balls. Brutal. |
Was it 80° when you did the pulls on the MCE dyno?
