Beautiful car, seeing it with the RPF1's made me want to cry (I had a 10AE on the same wheels that died a horrible death).

Great numbers on the new motor. Looking forward to seeing the car continue to evolve.

If you need to cut tasks, I would save the hood cutting and radiator ducting for last. You'll probably be OK temp-wise with the reroute and good OEM air ducting/undertray. I'm doing OK with that here in some really hot weather.

Just discovered this thread and was like man, how did I miss this build thread for so long?? Then I was trying to figure out why pics of last year's M@MRLS were posted last month... Then I realized it's one month fresh haha.

Next up is VVTuner, bleed the cooling system, ducting the radiator then hood vents and hard top. Much to do but for now I'm on schedule.

Things to watch for:

1. M-Tuned Reroute: Friend of mine found the worm clamps touching and damaging the hard brake lines.

2. Brake Cooling: I like the minimalist approach, but remember that the backing plate also acts as a heat shield for the tie rod end and lower ball joint boots. Keep an eye on them.

That is all . . . press on!

hornetball 08-27-2014 12:05 PM

Is that a Project Mu logo? Did you change brake pads on us?

I really like this build. Extremely functional.

Any way you could post your vvt settings in TS?

Just swapped a vvt motor into my nb1 and looking for a nice proven baseline. Would greatly appreciate it.

Also, where did you get power for the vvt solenoid?

From what I've been told each vvt tune is motor specific. Mine was done on the dyno so I'd be leery to load mine up and run with it. I'd start with the vvtuner base map settings that are vailable for DIY autotune. For my vvt solenoid i am getting power from an add a circuit.... but that is about to change shortly as I am adding a aux power fuse box so It will have it's on juice shortly.

Where has the time gone??? Since the MRLS event I've done 3 track days and an autoX from this car. Made some minor changes and done some maintenance. Time to get caught up.

Back in November I headed out to Chuckwalla Valley Raceway with speedventures for a single day. That was a great event at one of my favorite tracks. Temperatures were cool and there was barely any traffic.

I turned my best lap ever there at 2:06.8. Below is a video from the event. I've been playing around with dashware and racechrono. Really enjoying the results.

Chuckwalla manages to be an amazingly scenic track considering it's in the middle of no where desert.

I also got to take a spin in a GTR. It was crazy fast, just like you'd expect.

More to come.

The next event I did was Event #1 of the 2015 Miata challenge at Buttonwillow Raceway Park in the #13 CW configuration.

This weekend was some of the best driving I've ever done in this car. I was only .5 or so seconds off of my predictive optimal time and was turning very consistent laps. The car was mostly the same for this event but I did add an MSM rear sway which made a tremendous difference.

My time of 2:04.5 ended up being enough for the win in miata challenge mod class and a new mod class track record.

Video below showing me passing some much faster cars. GoGo Miata!!!

Making some adjustments to the tune before heading out.

He honestly couldn't have been a cooler dude. I had the chance to talk to him for a bit. I thanked him for running a grand am team and we talked racing. Honestly I think he was just stoked to be taking about something other than baseball. lol.

So to continue on in the updates. I got all my buddies together for an autoX for a joint birthday between a friend and I. The event was 2/21/15 speedventures autoX at autoclub speedway. These are very relaxed no work autoX so it's fun for a party, not fun to take all that seriously.

My wife attended with her mazdaspeed3 and I got to take it out for a few runs as instruction for her. We had in our group; Mazda 2, Miata, Mazdaspeed3, Focus ST, Fiesta ST, FRS and m30b35 swapped e30. It was a great day to give rides and do some instruction for me.

Sooooo... Here we are. Back to the present, errr, near past I suppose. I ran back out to chuckwalla for round 3 of the 2015 Miata challenge. Temps were absolutely scorching and my driving was not so good. Ambient temps were hitting 103 with surface temps of 145 degrees. Street tires were going off in about 3 laps and coming off the track with 180-200 degree pyrometer readings after a cooldown lap.

It's apparent I have some setup issues to resolve as well. I was fighting the car and just overdriving all weekend. With the hot temps I was 1.1 seconds off of my bast which was a bummer. Took second in miata challenge as a result.

I've been busy as hell with a new job, bike stuff and a handful of car things. I'll post up about the car upgrades after mrls. Currently on the way up. There's some big changes in store for this car after the Miatas at mrls event.

I'll be giving rides in the Blackbird Fabworx garage. I'll be pretty busy talking to people I'm sure but please come by and say hello. I want to meet some of the west coast miata turbo crew this year.

Well, the time has come for this build to move along to a new home. I just received the payment for it and dropped the title in the mail. It's going to be leaving the state and living in North Carolina starting in about 1.5 weeks (getting picked up by the shipping company early next week). I'm going to update this thread with the photos I took for the new owner just to sort of give back to the community a bit and add some search terms captioning each photo. I've been thrashing on the car to get it ready for the new owner, he's a track nut and this is his first miata... I wanted this thing to go to a good home and be loved and that's exactly what is happening.

This likely won't be my last miata, but I'm going to be out of the game for at least a little bit.

Car on jack stands so that I can give everything a once over.

Put it on the ground to take it for a spin and make sure everything was kosher. Since my last post I had added 15x9 - 6ul's and 225/45/15 maxxis RC1s. This was one of the final steps to head towards supermiata, which, I ultimately decided to pull the plug on.

A while back, I installed an ultralight racing skin hard top. I sold my oem hardtop. I think the new owner would have preferred the original top but w/e, he'll man up and grow to like this. I fabricated my own brackets out of aluminum Z metal and utilized dzus 1/4 turn fasteners to complete this install. A few photos from that effort. Let me know if anyone has any questions.

Rear fasteners are some ebay specials. Flat head decorative aluminum washers, aluminum flat head fasteners, nylon lock nuts. I used a neoprene adhesive one side tape that was 1/16 thick to create a seal and cover the landing surface for the window. This is the uv/scratch resistant lexan window.
