Its already got the STi drivetrain. Everything - trans, diff, axles, knuckles, brakes. He's been enjoying a 320whp vf39 setup on pump gas tuned by yours truly, but his engine is getting tired and has pretty high leakdown, so before anything breaks he's having me build the engine, and bolt on a 20g xt and ID1000's to it and aim for 450

Dammit...

I even sort of double checked the pictures before making that post, can't really tell from the fuzzy pictures.

I sort of want to hold on to the Killer B stuff in the off chance I ever own an EJ powered car ever again...

Kind of a stupid reason to keep something, but they are so nice

Used, but very low miles and they look basically new.

I was planning on asking $140 plus shipping/paypal. (Shipping shouldn't be too bad)

I can post or send pictures if you like.

*EDIT* - This is the EJ25 version pickup

oil starvation.
at least that's my guess, since this engine was never abused.
ej255's have this SUPER NASTY factory defect on the oil pick up tube. most of them, develop a hairline crack around it and run low oil pressure until they ultimately toast themselves.

this one we caught just in time, yanked it and sure enough the pick up tube was cracked, looks like nothing is majorly damaged except for that 1 main bearing.

ive never seen one fall apart like that before.

What sort of main and rod bearing clearances do you run in these built ej25s?

Just OEM spec or something different?

No machine work.
Just thorough cleaning, hot tanking, and machining of the heads.
There was no scoring except a tiny scratch on 1 cylinder. Measured each bore, checked each bore for ovaling, all checked out good and consistent, honed the bad boys out and they're good to go. 99.5 bore forged pistons going in.

OEM clearances on everything but the pistons, we'll be using 4032 alloy pistons. On those I went just a little more loose, but still tighter than with 2618 alloy.

I don't think I can say that this is typical for an engine build though: since there was no damage or warpage to anything we didn't need to machine or use different sized bearings. Most other engines that is mandatory.

I'll snap pictures of the heads when I can - they look fantastic. Basically dropped em off at the machine shop for "the works" (complete restoration to brand new).

Interesting, one of my subaru buddies did a build on an sti shortblock the same way. OEM good condition block and he dropped in forged pistons, rods, etc. This car made over 500whp.

I asked because the general consensus on this site is that forged pistons = mandatory machine work. What if you have a good condition block, can you get oem sized forged pistons like for a subaru?

Good work Vlad, i hope despite your lack of miata you continue to contribute here. I love watching your builds, miata or not.

+propz.

It's cool to see you having consistent fun with all sorts of cars. I'm jealous.

Good job, man. Keep it up.

Thanks

As for the machine work: these "drop in pistons" builds are only done on cars that have perfect engines with no scored or damaged or ovalled bores, and are not the "norm".
The overwhelming majority of built engines usually require machining/boring, so your thinking is more or less correct.

I pick and choose which cars I work on, or at least try to as much as possible, so many of these cars are in pretty good shape and not utter raging pieces of junk that require a ton of work to restore. This is a hobby, I don't want to turn it into a nightmare.

Hay guys! Watch me build a 500hp 4 banger on a dogfood bag and block of wood!

But seriously you do amazing work, no joke. What exactly do you do for your day job that allows you to spend this much time wrenching on things? I've just got the Miata at this point and I still can't find time to get the turbo on the damn thing.

You. I like you So much truth in this statement its not even funny. This is the reason I sold my 66 Mustang and got out of domestics all together. It just wasn't fun anymore.

I also find some irony in the title of this thread considering the content of the commentary.
