HF-mx5t's gt3076 @30psi with 7speed BMW m4 DCT gearbox..

21 Attachment(s)
just a few pics of my 99% finished 400+ whp project na mx5(german sold cars were called mx5 in 92 )

started out as a modified greddy kit a few years ago..
Attachment 203946
diy ic pipes, link , 440cc, all the normal bits.. running 15psi boost. Soon got tired of having just beeing a little slower that the regular porsches etc on trackday events. upgrades had to be done..
Tossed the 1.6 engine. put in a 1.8 from a protege, did not have a inlet manifold for a miata, so i buildt a quick and dirty diy one.
engine had carrillo rods, wiseco pistons, a t3/4 turbo, tial 38mm wg etc..
was running 22-23psi boost.. suddenly the porsches was not a problem.. would easily slide past a 996 gt3 on the back straight.. annoyed the hell out of the porsche guys, lotuses etc..

Attachment 203947
engine had a coolant reroute 750cc injectors etc too.. but the workmanship on the header was not good, and the quality of the materials were not good either.. also had issues with heatsoak of brake components in the enginebay..

time to redo everything

Attachment 203948
build a better header downpipe combo, for the gt3076 turbo.modified a enthuza 3" system with vband etc.
redid the coolant reroute a bit. better heat shields, rerouted brake lines.6 speed tranny, 3.6 torsen, afco's +++
Attachment 203949

Engine internals are still the same, balancing of the engine is better, the head fully ported, and running maruha cams.
Engine mangement changed to a autronic sm4 1.09 and chevy ls2 coil setup.
Ran the engine like this a bit last year.. testing things out.. works GREAT.
Attachment 203950

then some Inlet manifold changes.. redid the entire thing.
billet runners for the new manifold. watercut flange
Attachment 203951
Attachment 203952

dual chamber design (sort of like the old grB cars. we have been using this design with great success on 520whp race/rallycross spec saab engines, cosworth engines etc) and running a 70mm tb.
Attachment 203953
Attachment 203954
Attachment 203955
Attachment 203956

Attachment 203957 ready for the trackdays... almost :P

some finishing touches left a lot of places on the car.. but it almost there..
thanks to fm by the way, for great support on the afco setup..
Keith, i got all my parts installed, hoping to drive the car in a few days now.. will let you know how the 650/400 setup works :P

the speclist of this car has spiraled out of control the last few years, and i cannot really keep track of what has been done.. but i think the dash is one of few parts not touched.

First trackday test was in july..

sportscar club of norway had a trackday today.. lots of great cars.

Lotus exiges, porsche GT2, radical, 4rotor rx7. ++++

the car is a monster.. .65 bar boost. 3rd gear powerslides uphill on r888 tires, and set a laptime of 1min7 seconds. my friends GT2 with some ruf tuning(550hp, 780nm) did a 1.05something using r comps, racing suspension etc.

cant wait to get it properly tuned.. im expecting it to keep up with the modified GT2.

My dad was a very quiet passenger for the last set of laps for the day.. while i was chasing my friends 4 rotor rx7

NEW WHEELS!!

lovin the black 15x9 6ul rims with r888 tires :D

Attachment 203961

my first attempt at some decent looking shots of the car in its current spec.

Attachment 203965

also. a clear shot of the engine in current spec all heat shields etc in place...
Attachment 203966

also.. a very small clip of a testdrive near my garage..

Kind of a massive first post in the build theads.. but hey.. its almost finished now :) Hope you guys like what you see.

dyno time VERY soon. hoping for 400+

WOWWWWW:eek5:

I am inspired to go big turbo in the future. Love your car man. It is an absolute pleasure to look at. I can only imagine driving it. I'm sure its on par with JayL's car which I absolutely drool over.

You should post more often:D

miataspeed2005 08-25-2009 07:42 AM

Gotta love builds that don't leave you in suspense. Build it first show it complete, Awesome car! Must be a blast to drive.

NA6C-Guy 08-25-2009 07:46 AM

BRAVO! :winner: You win!

DMRider_10 08-25-2009 08:21 AM

Wow that is one seriously nice MX5!!!!

gospeed81 08-25-2009 08:38 AM

Damn...nice build.

I know right, everyone knows that location for the air filter is horrible.

Let boost be at 20 psi. The temp gain with turbo is about 14/15F per psi, or about 300°F.

On a 90°F ambient day, ambient absolute would be 90 + 460 = 550F.
The charge temp absolute would be about 550° + another 300° from the turbo, which comes out to 850°F

Density would degrade by 65%: 550/850 = .64

The pressure ratio at 20psi is 2.36.

So, with the heat from the turbo, then the 236% more density from compression will be degraded by 64%: .64 x 2.36, or to about 1.51. Thus a huge chunk of the density/power was lost and the system is 300°F closer to knock.

With a 90% efficient IC, .90 of the 300°F temp rise will be taken out, or about 270°F removed, thus leaving a net gain of 30°F. This would leave a density loss of only 6% from the heat, or a net gain of 2.36 x .94 = 2.24, or an overall gain of 224% rather than the 151% without the intercooler.

This assumes the filter is in a position sourcing ambient air. Behind the radiator is one of the worst places, the temperate sourced from that area is going to be closer to 150-190°F.

So, let's compare:

perfect conditions; 90°F ambient + 30°F after intercooler + 460°F = 580F
unideal conditions; 90°F ambient + [(190°F intake + 300°F turbo addition) x 90% intercooler] + 460°F = 599F

550/580 = 6% density loss or overall gain of 224%
550/599 = 9% density loss or overall gain 217%

So if you dynoed at 350rwhp with the filter behind the radiator, you have a potential of a 25rwhp gain if you simply moved the air filter to somewhere that would source ambient air.

hopefully i did the math right....but you get the idea NOOB.

Nice build. Wheres your downforce? When you have it you'll beat that GT2

magnamx-5 08-25-2009 11:45 AM

That is very bad ass how are you getting by tuv?

version 1 was pretty awful.
version 2 was a big improvement
version 3 is not as bad as 1, but has room for upgrades to cooler air.

edit: dont get me wrong, the build is awesome and has way more power than my sorry ass car! :)

Braineack 08-25-2009 12:47 PM

I'm just being funny Holmes.

Rafa 08-25-2009 12:50 PM

Awesome work Harald! :bowdown::bowdown::bowdown: :bigtu:

I think he is in Norway - so that lucky bastard ;) doesn't have to get the bloody TÜV. I think his car is imported from Germany or something like this...

Greets

If someone ever wants to know if Absurd flow will make big numbers, theres your answer.

UrbanSoot 08-25-2009 01:50 PM

really nice. i like this one a LOT!

hf-mx5t 08-25-2009 03:29 PM

they are even worse than in germany here.. my car is highly illegal.. :P

btw.. i know the filter is in a bad spot.. just havent had the time to fix stuff yet..

and even if i have only a few posts on this forum that does not mean i dont know what im doing. so shut the fuck up about the noob stuff. or show me your version of a diy turbo kit thats better.. asshole :P

btw.. dynoed 396.6whp. and 440+nm torque at the wheels today on a rototest dyno, even with the sucky filter placement. on gas similar to us 93 octane..

bloody hell the car is fast..

y8s 08-25-2009 03:55 PM

sorry this is the best I can do and it's not faster cuz my built motor is still in boxes. the picture is missing COPs and the mazdaspeed triangle brace.

http://gallery.y8s.com/d/17046-2/DSC02740.JPG

btw, I'm just pullin your noob chain. :)

buffon01 08-25-2009 05:08 PM

Nice built , I saw your thread in M.net.

Welcome to a real forum.:hustler:
