Both axle shaft caps popped off when I pulled them. The grease was like chocolaty. But the slange spun when the axle did.

congrats
post up the slip(s) when you get a chance. looks really close to my pump gas times

BTW: you have just COMPLETELY validated my fears about wheel hop and why I didn't push my car any more on my last 2 track days. It is violent. It breaks stuff. Really really bad stuff

Mine popped off as well when I removed my axles. Just bought some good quality Moly grease, removed the old, smeared new grease in, tapped end plates back on.

I hear it is unwise to put grease in like this though, apparently you want a "right" amount. I couldn't find the answer to that so I just said **** it and reinstalled. No problems after 10k so...

Also depress the collar, clean the bearing, and slip it back in no harm no foul.

Well I ended up winning a 6 speed 3.9 car so maybe I'll use those axles too. This grease was pure chocolate.

Well if that is the case, it may be smart to. My grease had no discoloration to it.

I wonder if those end caps were never tapped back on properly and a bunch of water got in them to make it look chocolatish.

End caps pop off all the time when you get aggressive with removal. Not a big deal. The inner CV joints can be dismantled, cleaned and regreased easily. It's the outer CV joints that can't be serviced.

Good to hear. I'll clean these up and probably keep them as spares. Do you know if they are the same side to side?

Also, are 1 piece axles interchangeable with the 2 piece.

Actually, some here have dismantled the outers too, but it takes some doing.
