I call her Casper

Hey everyone. I just recently bought a 99 white miata. I recently got rid of my 2010 speed3 because I was afraid of blowing my motor and not having the funds to get a DD and fix the car while making the car payment. Well I wanted a miata for a bit before I got rid of the speed. So about a month after I got rid of the car I found Casper on ebay and it was local and supercharged. I was estatic about it and went and saw the car. It only took once and I picked it up for 3500. There were a few problems with it but I thought it was simple. Turns out not so simple. The last 2 months I have been struggling to get the car running right and finally got fed up and took off the supercharger. I planned on turboing it anyways so that just makes it better.

Here are some pictures of the ride:

Current mods:
Raceland Coilovers
Harddog Rollbar
Jackson Racing Headers
AEM Boost guage
Brainstorm exhaust

Had:
Jackson Racing M45 supercharger
Trackdog Intercooler

I also picked up a few goodies from soviet the other day. Was great to meet him.

Plans:
Begi Cast manifold (soviet)
Begi DP (soviet)
550cc injectors (soviet)
T25 SR20 Turbo (573)
DIYPNP
Ebay bride seats
and a few other goodies

I have been having problems with it. If anyone has any insight then I would much appericiate it. Here is a short youtube video showing my problem. For now I have a homemade intake.

I was thinking it is misfiring but not sure. I replaced the spark plugs, the ISCV, and a few other parts. I am starting to read a bit about the TPS causing some problems in the car. I have had some bucking doing down the highway and things a bit. Anything would help me.

I'm pretty sure I can hear a vacuum leak, but by taking the video in the garage, you introduce a crap-ton of echo and exhaust noise that negates using sound as a diagnostic tool.
Back it onto the driveway and re-record.

Also, only fags name their cars. There are exceptions to track cars and vehicles that have an extensive history in either awesomeness or blood. Yours does not qualify. This is irrelevant if you're actually gay.

Oh yeah... Casper The Friendly Ghost was a raging queer.
Welcome to the forum.

PS: I'm only giving you shiz because I'm super-jealous... a lightly modified white '99 is what I dream of at night when Casper isn't haunting me.

mghtymouse380 08-02-2012 10:03 PM

Yeah I have thought about a vaccum leak but I am not sure. I believe what you are hearing is the fan that is turned on. And Lightly modified is an understatement. And this has been a big headache so far.

I dont care about internet ----. And I didnt actually name it that is what the last owner called it and I just liked it a lot so I kept it going.

I will back it out and rerecord but it doesnt always do it everytime I turn the car on. Thanks for the input.

thirdgen 08-02-2012 10:42 PM

Nice car/ welcome.

mghtymouse380 08-03-2012 06:35 AM

Thanks very much. Hoping to have a setup kind of like yours. We shall see. Just bought an SR20 turbo. Next is gonna be a while though. I need an ecu so I have some parts to sell out of my garage first!

thirdgen 08-03-2012 09:18 AM

PM me for advice/ questions...I'm glad to help!

mghtymouse380 08-03-2012 10:21 AM

I really appericiate it. I will be sure to hit you up. Do you have a build thread I can look over?

thirdgen 08-03-2012 11:21 AM

Build thread? I don't need no stinking build thread!!!
Actually I have a spare motor waiting for me to work on to swap in my car, when I start stuff on that, I might make a build thread.
PM me for questions about my current setup.

shifty35 08-03-2012 01:47 PM

99/00 coils are known to fail. Have they been recently replaced?

soviet 08-03-2012 02:47 PM

Yep, car looks pretty good in person.

I think your biggest problem with idle is the Powercard. Kill it with fire. Get MS3+MS3X. Live happy ever after.

rhysmate 08-05-2012 11:05 AM

My mate has a white rs.. wide arches look well on these.. good luck man :)

mghtymouse380 08-06-2012 12:18 PM

Soviet it shouldnt be having any effect anymore because it only comes into play when there is boost. But I am going to disconnect it here in a day or two. I am also gonna change out my TPS with one that a friend has to see if that solves anything as well.

mghtymouse380 08-06-2012 08:09 PM

I did a compression test today and it was just fine.

#1 170, 170
#2 165, 170
#3 160, 160
#4 180, 175

I am also trying to get a TPS from a friend of mine that said he had one laying around. I am also hoping soon to get a DIYPNP. I think that part of the problem is with the ECU. The powercard is still spliced in and it needs to come out. Next thing on the adgenda is to build a boost leak tester and see if I can find some vaccumm leaks.

mghtymouse380 08-07-2012 06:50 PM

Got my turbo today. I am starting to get excited. Still along way to go.

Nice. Can't wait for you to finish

mghtymouse380 08-11-2012 09:04 AM

Thanks. I need to get some work done on it but I have been busy. Mabey this weekend seeing that I am stuck at home taking care of my girlfriend. She just got her wisdom teeth taken out.

mghtymouse380 08-16-2012 06:45 PM

Not a big update but when I got the car it had a broken antenna and the stock Bose CD player didnt work so I had no music since I had the car so I put in this old radio I had laying around the garage.
http://inlinethumb30.webshots.com/50...500x500Q85.jpg
Also got an ultraguage today as well. I am gonna mount it like this.
http://inlinethumb62.webshots.com/50...500x500Q85.jpg

mghtymouse380 08-16-2012 06:46 PM

The ultraguage got a CEL of P0123 which is a TPS high voltage. So I am going to be checking the sensor and checking all of the wiring to see what I can find. Hopefully it is a wire I can just patch up and get back on the road.

mghtymouse380 09-09-2012 08:56 AM

Little bit of an update:
Ended up replacing the TPS. That didn't fix the problem but did get rid of the problem. Got really tired of messing with things and finally said I didn't know enough so I took it to a trusted mechanic that I have known for a while and the figured out that my Coolant Temp harness was messed up so the re pinned it and the car drove alot better. They also replaced the first O2 sensor because it was giving crazy readings on a multimeter.
When I got the car back it drove 100% better for a few days and then started giving the coolant problem again. So I am currently replacing the coolant temp sensor. It is a bitch just because of location. Hopefully that will be done today or tomorrow.

ON TO THE GOOD STUFF:
Finally got my wideband in and working. Ended up putting it on the second bung in my Jackson Racing Header. Routed it up and through the drain in the passenger floorboards.

PICS:

And a cockpit shot to see guages:
http://inlinethumb38.webshots.com/50...500x500Q85.jpg

Finally the good news.... Picked up a 99 DIYPNP. Was told it was the prototype for the 99 plug and play and has all the same options.

richyvrlimited 09-10-2012 06:58 AM

Might want to put a grommet on those wires or they'll rub through the insulation and cause you issues further down the line.

Not sure on re-purposing the drain hole either, it's there for a reason.

Also not sure on running the wideband cable across the bottom of the gearbox, that's just asking for something to catch and rip it off.

mghtymouse380 09-11-2012 04:30 PM

The drain is still in place and still working the way it should. It is routed pretty good and not touching anything. So I am not worried about that. Thanks for the input though

richyvrlimited 09-11-2012 05:58 PM

Those wires are touching bodywork as they come through to inside the cabin, they will fret through at some point.

I really would put a grommet there minimum.

mghtymouse380 09-12-2012 11:50 AM

Ill make sure to put some rubber so they dont rub through. Finally got the coolant sensor replaced and the car runs again. I am getting the shittiest gas milage ever though at 18mpg. I am about to put on the Megasquirt here soon so that can fix all the fuel that is being dumped.

QUESTION: I am about to finish my turbo parts list and need to know where the best place is to route the oil feed line. I know the drain into the pan but do most people use a oil sandwhich plate and tee for the feed line. I was told that a feed line shouldnt be longer then 2ft. Any help would be awesome. About a month out from install hopefully.

Now I am picking up a block that was taked out of a car that supposedly fried the piston rings or something to that nature. I will get more details soon. I am looking to build this motor on the side in order to take a bigger turbo to support close to 300 rwhp.

I am looking at trying to keep the build to about 2500. This will be my first build and need some help. I have been looking at rods and pistons but not sure what to go with as of yet because I need to do more research. The biggest thing I need to get is get the block break it down and get it checked to make sure that I can still use it. Picking up the block later this week for $50.

Any help or thoughts would be appericiated.

Picked up the block today now have to make some decisions on what I want to do. Was told that the block had a fried piston ring. Looking to make it to about 300-350 to the wheels. Any suggestions would be appericiated.

1) Build engine

2) EFR6258

3) ???

4) Profit.

mghtymouse380 02-20-2013 03:59 PM

Im thinking of a GTX2867 to attach to my BEGI manifold and get Abe to make me a custom dp.

Not sure what rods and pistons to get for the build. Trying to keep it under 2500 for everything.

thenuge26 02-20-2013 04:10 PM

I just grabbed Brandon's deal for $795 for rods + pistons + bearings. Add ARP head and main studs (got them from Doap also), BE street or street-strip pump, and a harmonic damper if you can afford it.

mghtymouse380 02-20-2013 04:24 PM

It will be a bit because I have to save some money but I was looking at his deal not to long ago. Thanks for the help. This is my first motor build so I will have to do some research to do. I am excited now.

Tore down the block today. Looks like the Crankshaft is gonna have to machined and gonna have to get oversized bearing. I am trying to get everything together in a spreadsheet to keep track of everything that I get. I would appericiate it if people would tell me if I am missing anything for my build.

Cool. Few of us Miata people here. Military?

Fireindc 06-16-2013 11:37 PM

Cool thread! In for the motor build.

I have a question, did you use any kind of oil restrictor with the -4an feed line on the sr20 turbo?
