The I have no idea what I'm doing build

Hi!

Pull up a chair, grab a drink and watch as I butcher up this build thread. My intent for this thread is to gain input from other experienced users and to document my motor build process.

Here's my current setup:
https://www.miataturbo.net/dynos-tim...60r-e85-89501/

Future Build:
'99 BP4W Head - Picked up
'94 Block - Needs to be picked up
6 Speed Transmission - Need to find
83.5MM 11:1 Supertech Pistons (May change to 84mm. Depends on what the machinist finds)
Wiseco xx piston rings
ACL bearings
SCAT or Manley Rods
Boundary Pump (shim or no shim?)
ATI/SM Damper (what trigger wheel?)
ARP hesdstuds
Plus all the other essential stuff (gaskets, etc.)
1.8 FM Manifold
1.8 motor mounts
Billet wheel upgrade for the turbo (maybe)

It's going to be a budget conscious build, so any parts that can be salvaged from my 1.6 will be salvaged (cops, injectors, etc.) The build will not be quick, as I need to spread the cost, so, for the time being, I will be sticking with my gt2560 and maxing the shit out of it. If time/money allows it, I would like to throw a gt2863r w/ .86 ar housing.

Now, to answer some common questions.

Q. Why didn't you pick up a VVT motor instead?
A. I couldn't find a VVT motor for less than $1200, and I didn't want to spend that much just to tear the engine down. I got the block for $100, and the head was $250.

Q. Why not Trackspeed turbo kit?
A. Cost and downtime. I can sell my current turbo setup and offset some of the cost but the car would be down for an undetermined time, and I definitely don't want that. Whereas with the FM setup I can just swap the manifold and recuperate a good chunk back.

Q. 11:1 Static compression?
A. E85 only motor. Plus I'm curious if this will work, from the threads I've read there appears to be an agreement that ~10:1 should be your minimum for high boost e85 motors.

Q. What about head work?
A. Sticking to a stock rebuild, I don't plan on revving it past the stock rev limiter. (this may change)

Q. How will I control VICS?
A. I'm letting the MS3 control it via Inj E output.

Q. Why didn't you just start with a 1.8 like we told you?
A. I'm a dumb ass.

Q. What's the purpose of the car?
A. Fun weekend / not serious autox car.

Q. Will you be converting over to a cam/crank sensor and ditching the cas?
A. That's the plan (stock sensor).

I didn't take any pictures yet, but here's the motor the head came from (courtesy of seller). He didn't want to sell the whole engine because he was keeping the block as a backup. He competes in roadster cup.

I welcome any recommendations/comments/criticism :)

Borrowed my friend's Chevy Spark last night to pick up the '94 block. I'm surprised that little car has so much cargo room.

Sorry for the potato quality photo.

It was a handful trying to unload it from the car. Scared I was going to tweak my back.

I will probably tear down the block and head this weekend to see the condition. The block came from a car that overheated, hopefully, it's not too bad.

I needed to buy a 12" caliper to check the height of block and head, so I bought a cheap one off of Amazon. Not 100% confident on it.

Here it is compared to my work calipers

I found some old feeler gauge in a storage room at work.

Also found this beat up mic. Everything looks good so far.

Cheap calipers I bought from Amazon.

Not as nice as my Mitutoyo but its also a lot cheaper.

According to the factory service manual, the minimum block height is 8.712", has anyone gone below that? Is it ill advised to go below that?
