I should start welding on the lamp tomorrow. I was just test fitting 2 rods last night to see if my idea was feasible. I will take some rods and the rim up to my welding class and my teacher said he will help me figure out the correct filler rods and such to use to properly weld it all together.

There are things that Shuind doesn't want to learn.

weld steel rods to aluminum wheel?

triple88a 02-08-2013 09:17 AM

Drill a hole in the wheel and use a bolt?

Ya, when you hear what this filler is I'm interested also.:giggle:

It may be possible to TIG with silicon bronze. Basically it's brazing with TIG. We did a bit of it in class but not aluminum to steel, but it's possible. It won't melt the base metal like normal welding, just sticks to the base metal. Might work.

This is why I am taking it up to class with me and talking to my professor about what I need to do it correctly.

You are silly.

I accidentally grabbed a stainless filler wire when welding aluminum I/C pipes. It stuck, It also went KA PLOWWWWWW BZZEETPPPSSTHHHHHH

Why not just take off the cap, place rod onto wheel spoke, replace cap. If you have 3 or 4 rods at the base, it will be stable enough.

So you mean have the rods free floating around the spokes but still leaning against each other? I may be able to do that. I will test that idea when I get home this afternoon.

TurboTim 02-08-2013 12:51 PM

Right, but when you weld the rods together where they all converge, over the center of the wheel, they will be rigid. Nah-mean?

IcantDo55 02-08-2013 01:03 PM

Do you really love lamp or are you just saying that?

Need to get some billet aluminum rods and just tig them up.
