First, I'd like to ask for tuning help! Once the turbo is installed, would anyone be willing to help me street tune? I can pay a bit (beer), and would drive to you.

So in the year and a half or so I've had my miata, I've tried to do everything I thought necesarry up to adding power. Here's the summary:

-2.5" mandrel-bent catback, magnaflow straight-through, copied from DP6061, copied from RSR

-stance GR+ coilovers

-Boundary eng. frame rails

-new crappy wheels and tires

-r lip

-painted hardtop

Advice needed:

Slim fan choice? (cheap and awesome, of course)

Where should I take signal from for the boost gauge? Is tapping into MS's signal (from mani) ok?

Ebay slim fans have worked flawlessly for me. Just make sure you run them parallel.

I had my map line tapped into the frp line, then I tapped everything else off of that line inside the cabin.

assuming you mean fpr, thanks... If you really mean frp, I dunno what you're talking about.

Hm, there's lots of ebay slims, I heard somewhere the curved blades work better?

NEXT QUESTION: Should I ceramic coat my mani? Is there any serious structural downside to leaving it bare (mild steel)? It will rust, but enough to cause problems? Rust isnt a huge problem down here

curly 09-13-2010 06:06 PM

From what I've seen, turbo heat may be a little much for ceramic coating. I'd just paint it with exhaust paint. Depends on how pretty you need your exhaust manifold to be.

kewilso3 09-13-2010 06:11 PM

hm, I've heard that ceramic holds up better than that? Guess not, I'll look into it more, I'm not wanting to look pretty, just to protect my investment mainly

curly 09-13-2010 06:17 PM

Yes it does, but it costs more than $5 too.

If this:

is true, just do exhaust paint.

kewilso3 09-18-2010 01:56 PM

Progress:

http://sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-..._4802064_n.jpg

EGR is blocked off, pan is tapped with -10AN in there, turbo clocked, feed line is in. I have a 45 degree fitting for the drain, which is what I thought I would need looking at others' setups, but it looks like I need a 90. Other than that I need a short piece of 2.5" and 2" ic piping to shorten the fm silicone pipes. That and a tight 90 welded for the compressor outlet, damn I wish I had a machined round outlet instead of a flanged one...

Also, these arrived yesterday:

http://i453.photobucket.com/albums/q...panasport1.jpg

kewilso3 09-18-2010 08:55 PM

drain is in, water lines are in, relocation of ait and wideband are next

chicksdigmiatas 09-18-2010 10:49 PM

I havent seen a harris teeter since i lived in Wilmington. Use ebay fans. Dont build your own wideband.

kewilso3 09-19-2010 12:11 PM

I'm not building my wideband? I'm moving it because it was in the factory spot and it needs to reach further down near the cat

kewilso3 09-20-2010 12:09 AM

wideband mounted, ait half extended, ic pipes done, bov on, slowly cleaning up

The regular silver stuff (1700 deg) will hold up on a street car if the part is prepped properly. It will turn grey when heat cycled, but it still looks better than oxidation and can be polished back up with mother/blue magic.

Then there's the Tirado customs ceramic 'paint' which has a great rep in the mitsu crowd which is good for higher temps.

There's also the more expensive Swain and Jet Hot routes which are suitable for for turbo applications and also provide noticeable thermal improvements.

I have the silver, 1700 deg cheapo crap on the exhaust housing of my turbo and after 7k miles it's free of any cracking or lifting. The key is prep and installation. Like powder coat, once you scratch the surface and expose the base metal to the environment the oxidation will work its way under the coating and promotes lifting. The only part I had lifting on was my manifold and it was in areas which got marred during a number of installs/removals.

Interesting, I'll see if I ever get around to it, eagerness got the best of me as you can see. I'm also thinking about polishing it a bit to keep rust away, since that's free. Anyway, I'm all done minus intake, heat wrap on water hoses, and dp which needs to be made, which leads me to my next question:

CAN I RUN WITHOUT MY WIDEBAND SENSOR IN?
WHAT DO I CHANGE TO STAY IN OPEN LOOP? TS/MS2
I'M LOOKING FOR THIS INFO, HAVN'T FOUND IT YET

Alright so it's running, drove about 10-15 miles today with my sr20 collector on (about 7" total of exhaust). Got caught in a torrential downpour halfway, but pulled off to wait it out and all it good. No leaks, builds boost, sounds fucking amazing. I wish I could keep the exhaust like this. I'm so pumped to get the dp made, which will hopefully happen tomorrow, then I can really boost since I'll know what's goin on with the afr's

Oh and it's faster too, I beat a Yaris!

kewilso3 09-28-2010 12:21 AM

dp done, build complete for now! Just time to tune :(

$800 takes them, 13x8.5, 5.5bs

Here's my base timing map I'm gonna try out, I'm currently working on target afr's for it, critiques encouraged, but consider that I am just trying to get something fun but safe until I make it to the dyno in a couple months.

Is VE Analyze still the best way to go for figuring out fuel? Autotuning for boost worries me, and I'd rather not log, tune, log, tune, log...

Attachment 194074

kewilso3 09-28-2010 01:12 PM

10psi btw, maybe I'll go to 12 when I dyno

Braineack 09-28-2010 01:13 PM

i think autotuning boost is easiest. since the MAP is constant (more or less) and the rpms slowly increase, it's pretty easy for it to make it perfect. always start rich.

kewilso3 09-28-2010 01:39 PM

Yeah I'm thinking I'll stay with my conservative afr table for now and auto tune toward that, as my base fuel values are high even for the rich afr table. When I'm matching my table I'll work on it some. This way I'll be changing less all at once, taking baby steps.

Only problems so far have been nuts and studs loosening, and my bov was leaky (old fm style)

I've got some hoosire slicks coming for the panasports, first track day will be mid november

engine bay is finally cleaned up, just needs some heat shielding now

Cut my steering wheel apart today and welded in spacers to bring it about 3/4" closer to me... It is amazing the difference it made in hard driving; steering feels better, less effort, and most importantly WAY easier to heel/toe

Also got some 8x21.5-13 hoosier slicks mounted on the panasports, 22lbs combined ftw
I'll continue the crappy cellphone picture theme...

your car has a crooked weinkie!

I have absolutely no clue what that is supposed to mean

WonTon 11-08-2010 08:12 PM

your Airintake looks like a crooked dick man! :giggle:

build looks tits though, good job! :bigtu:

kewilso3 11-08-2010 08:14 PM

thanks, i guess every bent tube looks like a crooked dick though...

At least it got some penetration when i put the heatshield on

whats going on with the wheel in the right side?

it's a 240 man, it's mad drift camber... No that's my wheel leaning on his

FatKao 11-16-2010 10:06 AM

What track day are you going to be at? I'll be at VIR the weekend after thanksgiving with AV. If that's the one you're going to feel free to hunt me out, black 1997 with a flat black (bedliner) hard top.

[edit]
I'm guessing that's not the one you're going to. I don't see any student 1994 Miatas registered.

kewilso3 11-16-2010 11:41 PM

driftwater, this weekend

kewilso3 11-30-2010 04:14 AM

Went to track, had a blast, out of the nine studs involving the turbo, six backed completely out, one nut on the DP was hand-tight, other was tight, and one bolt was tight on the turbo-mani connection... yay

So I switched to bolts instead of stud-nuts and safety wired all that I could. Also replaced the inlet gasket since I melted it

I ran the quickest lap of any my friends recorded (no official timer) thanks to the Hoosiers. Noteworthy competitors included an 04 WRX, 88 M3, 290hp Ion Redline, 04 Boxster, 03 WRX, 04 s2k, and an 06 Corvette

yay me. This was my first-ever auto event of any kind and it was a great low-pressure introduction. I was even worse than I thought I would be but I am hooked for sure and can't wait to get back out to more events.

Wow. You're engine bay is super clean, I love the detailed work.

I've always had a soft spot for black&tan interior.

kewilso3 05-03-2011 10:14 PM

Thanks, i haeld out for a black and tan 94 with hardtop for a while, single owner old lady car.

Anyway, i've been busy buyin shit but not doing anything with it... My manifold has been ceramic coated silver, converted to vband with and external gate also (38mm), and i have a new gt2860rs/tial mvs to go with that. I'm doing a coolant reroute and adding a water temp gauge at the same time, and converting to full stainless water lines as well.

TurboTim did all the manifold work and supplied the Tial products, thanks again to him. I'll update when all my new goodies are installed, i'm currently twiddling my thumbs waiting on the water temp kit to arrive since it's on backorder.

Oh yeah, Work meister cr-01's are on order as well, 15x9.5 +29, but those will take a while to arrive

TurboTim 05-03-2011 10:42 PM

Dude WTF how did I miss this thread, DAMNIT. Your car looks quite slick Kaden!! Some here may think it's rice, but I love the polished hood.

Do you have any pics of your old downpipe? You mentioned a SR20 section; I'm not sure how you're doing the rest of the pipe. And with the EWG dump tube, make sure that thing's braced well if it's not blended back into the downpipe. Sav's first downpipe/dumppipe wasn't blended together and it didn't take long for the MVS to rip off taking part of the manifold with it.

I'm surprised how good the ceramic coating looked starting from a old/used/dirty manifold. Niiice.

Your old T2 flange became part of the jig for Shieund's ramhorn :) Thanks for saving me some $

kewilso3 05-04-2011 07:13 AM

Thanks Tim, i dont run the polished hood, it has a big vent cut in it now and will be for the track only if i use it.

There is also no sr20 section in my dp, i ended up just using that to drive to the exhaust shop and then got a full DP made.

Hopefully I can blend it, otherwise i'll be sure to brace it, thanks. I'll try to post pictures soon, the coating does look very good.

kewilso3 05-10-2011 09:16 PM

Ok so all the lines are attached to le turbo, and hotside stuff should be on tomorrow. Then I have to get an elbow welded to the radiator for the coolant reroute. Then I have to pray that my gauge gets here this week. Then exhaust shop... eff that's a lot to do by the 5th.
