What the hell do you guys use for catless NA builds. We blow through mufflers like crazy. I think our DIY ss wool packing will work once I weld it up. Apparently this one fell apart at the rivets.

mufflers? Who needs mufflers??
sorry wish I had a better answer... |

Aim it at the sky, baby!

Turbos are certainly the best mufflers out there...
You better believe there'd be a straight pipe out the hood if we ever threw a turbo in. |

Just buy the ceramic packing from burns stainless. And if the rivets are failing it means you're exhaust is not secured well enough. I could never get a repackable midpipe muffler to stay together, but those were aluminum.
I know, dissimilar metals and stuff, but it will work. |
I cut ~1" out of the muffler body, sliced an edge, slide it inside, and riveted to that. Next plan is for me to try and weld this shitty SS with my even shittier flux core.
|
What do you mean you go through mufflers like crazy? I have been running my 92 on the street for about 30k with a gutted cat and have not noticed any changes in the muffler tone or volume or such.
|
We're putting mufflers on that match the cheapness of the 1.6 chassis, and without test pipes they're burning through the cheap ass packing. Hence the steel wool.
Our best was the true magnaflow, but it's way too big and ugly, and we don't want to buy a new one for $80-100. Hence the $8 DIY repacking. That needs to be fixed. |

Had 15 minutes to play with the car yesterday, got an opportunity to replace on of the turn signals with lexan, there will be a projector mounted behind it for headlight use. |
If you want to be real cheap, I was thinking of experimenting with some furnace fiberglass insulation as packing I found on mcmaster. My roommate bought a bunch when we made his aluminum mufflers but he decided to go the safe route with the burns ceramic stuff. I think he bought like a massive box of it for like $40, enough to do like 5 normal sized mufflers.
*Edit, I hope you didnt use hardware store steel wool, we set a formula car on fire with that stuff cause it burns at temps it'll see in the exhaust. |

yep |
Ill let the cat out of the bag, there will be an additional muffling device installed on Laz soon that will negate the need to worry about muffler packing. It will work in conjunction with a certain red valve covered 1.8 motor to provide wooshing noises/

Update time, laz received an msm subframe, diff, one piece axles, and rear subframe brace today.
Out with the old https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405187431 And in with the new https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405187431 |
So why the entire subframe swap? Is that easier? It kinda looks like it.
|
It was actually, falls straight down, installs straight up.
With the diff, you've gotta shimmy it left and right and forward and backward to avoid the control arm mounts and axles. But that's not why we did the whole subframe. The NB has better suspension geometry, although I'm not sure if that includes the back too. But, it does have the mounts for the subframe braces, which we bolted on. |

Perfect we swapped in the entire assembly, uprights and all.
laz will be a nice NA/NB hybrid soon enough. I think 200whp would be nice but I'll be happy with 180, I want midrange torque for coming out of corners more than anything, it should be nice with the stronger msm diff setup so I can launch control my way to glory. Also got this little guy for the msm motor, its a 2.5 inch downpipe from pro tuning lab. https://www.miataturbo.net/attachmen...ine=1405214710 |
